Ameerika ühendriigid

It is a significant transportation artery and when combined with its major tributaries (the Missouri and the Ohio rivers) it becomes the third largest river system in the world (at 6,236 km). The western tributaries are the Red River, the Arkansas and the Missouri. The eastern tributaries are the Tennessee and the Ohio. Its name means the Father of Waters in the red Indian. Together with its tributaries it forms 20,000 km of navigable waterways. Other important rivers are the Colorado and the Columbia that flow into the Pacific Ocean, and the Rio Grande. The rivers of the Pacific basin are rapid. There are many hydro-electric power-stations on them. Over 800 rivers cross the continental (48) states. Most are small branches and/or tributaries of larger rivers. The great lakes between the USA and Canada are joined together by rivers and canals...

Gym Hazards

People often find themselves exercising one muscle more than another so they may end up with some muscles more developed than others, or even getting bigger in the very places they want to reduce or firm up. This happens when woman fail to lose fat as the same time as they build muscle. The modern idea that everybody has to join a gym is just ridiculous. Walking, swimming, rowing and dancing have all been found to be good all-round forms of exercises. The key to sticking with exercise is to make it fun, and if going to the gym seems boring or painful, there is no need to do it. Berthe Valdaru 12a...

Kafka's Hunger Artist

The viewing public's interest is derived from their desire to see the hunger artist cheating, but to view this would put an end to that desire. Finally, Kafka presents this idea while the artist is at the circus and describing when people wish to view the starved man. The hunger artist's nourishment is spiritual. The man only wishes to be honored by the public. As he continuously spirals downward in his health, he looses all forms of material nourishment. As the days go on, there is conflict between the artist and the audience, as they do not believe him honest in claiming not to have eaten. By searching for the audience's approval, a symbol for spiritual nourishment, he loses both material and spiritual nourishment. The climax of the story occurs when he finally achieves his final goal which he believes will give him ultimate satisfaction: a fast until death. As...

Proseminar

g. According to Jung, the "something greater" is the unconscious, which he defines as "a natural phenomenon producing symbols that prove to be meaningful.") FGI 1811 Proseminar I. Ladusseva 6 4. With the quotations interrupted by the author we need commas on both sides of the author's words. Here quotation forms one sentence so only first letter is capital (e.g. "Ideas," writes Carl Jung, "spring from something greater than the personal human being."). 5. A closing comma or full stop goes inside the closing (e.g. "High school," writes Ellen Willis, "permanently damaged my self-esteem."). 6. A closing semicolon or colon goes outside the closing quotation mark (e.g. The head of the union...

Stilistika loeng

In colloquial speech the same effect is achieved by "man", "girl", "chap", "fellow". The speaker may use pronouns "he", "she" meaning himself as if viewing himself from the distance and this is a means of focusing more attention on the speaker (e.g. K. Mansfield: "I do not want to write; I want to live. What does she mean by that?" ). The archaic second personal pronoun "thou" ("thee thy thyself") and its forms may be used nowadays to create an elevated mood in poetry. In prose they may convey geographical or historical background (e.g. E. Hemingway rendered the speech of a Spanish person by using "thou"; or W. Scott in his historical novels used "thou" for ancient colouring). "It", "he", "she" may be involved in personification (e.g. "The Moon smiled her smile."). When applied to people transfers then to a class of objects and creates irony, humor or negative...
