Varakeskaeg Inglismaal

Matilda married to a great French noble to make the family stronger. When Henry died, there were to heirs. One was Henry's nephew Stephen who was in England and Matilda who was in France. Stephen acted quickly and claimed the throne to himself. Matilda invaded England a few years later. That led to a terrible civil war. Neither side could win so Matilda agreed to let Stephen be king, but her son Henry would be next. Stephen died the following year and the both countries were united under one king again. Henry II managed to put together a big empire but he fought a lot with his sons and wife. He was followed by his son Richard the Lionheart. When he died, the French king took some parts of Richards French land to himself. Richard was followed by his brother John who was already very unpopular for being greedy. In1204 he became even more unpopular because the French king invaded Normandy and the English nobles lost their land there...

Mid-term 1 in English Phonetics and Phonology

When the articulators come apart, the airstream will be released in a small burst of sound. Aspiration a period of voicelessness after the release of an articulation, e.g. pie [paý] NB! K, p, t are unvoiced/aspirated consonants and g, b, d are unaspirated/voiced consonants. These unvoiced stops are completely unaspirated (spy, sty, sky), because stop is immediately following word-initial s. Fricatives, Affricates, Nasals. Fricatives - narrowing the distance between two articulators so that the airstream is partially obstructed and a turbulent airflow is produced (i.e. friction). Fricatives may be voiced or voiceless. Consonants can be classified by: place of articulation( bilabial /p/; /b/; /m/ ; labiodental /f/; /v/; alveolar /t/; /d/; /n/; velar /k/; /g/ manner of articulation refers to variation in the way the airstream is affected...

English Phonetics and Phonology. Mid-term2

The second area of difficulty can be called the problem of assignment. There may be found many cases where it is difficult to assign a particular speech sound to a particular phoneme. We use the term neutralisation for cases where contrasts between phonemes which exist in other places in the language disappear in particular contexts. A clearer case of neutralisation can be found in the case of plosives following s in syllable-initial position. Words like 'spill', 'still', 'skill' are usually represented with the phonemes p, t, k following the s. But, as many writers have pointed out, it would be quite reasonable to transcribe them with b, d, g instead, because b, d, g are unaspirated while p, t, k in syllable- initial position are usually aspirated; but in sp, st, sk we find an unaspirated plosive. Although we dont transcribe...

Celebrity

Shakur was initially a roadie and backup dancer for the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground.Shakur's debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, gained critical recognition and backlash for its controversial lyrics. Shakur became the target of lawsuits and experienced other legal problems. Later, he was shot five times and robbed in the lobby of a recording studio in New York City. Following the event, Shakur grew suspicious that other figures in the rap industry had prior knowledge of the incident and did not warn him; the controversy helped spark the East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry. After serving eleven months of his sentence for sexual abuse, Shakur was released from prison on an appeal financed by Marion "Suge" Knight, the CEO of Death Row Records. In exchange for Suge's assistance, Shakur agreed to release three albums under the Death Row label....

e.g. A: I'm going to have a party next week. I'll invite all my friends. B: That'll be great. 2) We normally use the present continuous rather than be going to with verbs which express movement, especially the verbs go and come. e.g. Sam is going to the market in a few minutes. Sheila is coming to my house for tea this afternoon NB! The future simple and be going to are used with the following time expressions: tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, tonight, soon, next week/month/year, in a week/month/year, in two/three days/weeks, etc. Future Continuous (will be +ing) a) for an action which will be in progress at a stated future time. The role of the free press

However, does the free press offer a valuable service, or is it, as American journalist, Edward Egglestone said, "organised gossip"? On a personal level, the media can be very entertaining and informative. Reading about the lifestyles of the rich and famous is amusing and can help people forget their own problems. However, journalists frequently intrude on the privacy of celebrities, following them and photographing them in their most intimate moments. This is surely an unacceptable interpretation of the word "free". As far as politics are concerned, the free press is important as it often reveals the truth behind all the speeches and accusations. Unfortunately, most newspapers tend to favour a particular political party, meaning that their articles are not objective. In addition,...

London topic

The warmest month is July. The coolest month is January. Winders are seldom below freezing. Rainfall is regular, but most often in the form of drizzle occurring throughout the year. Snow occurs sometimes in winter but rarely settles more than a few millimetres deep. History The origin of London may be dated around the beginning of the 1st century AD, when a Celtic tribe settled near a fordable point of the Thames. L achieved real importance following the Roman conquest under Claudius (43AD). The Romans build a bridge, somewhat east of the present city. This bridge soon was part of a trade road and attracted more and more traders. Soon the flourishing city Londinium came into existence. The Romans rebuilt the town into a centre of great importance. After the Romans withdrew from Britain in the Picts, Scots, Jutes, Angles and Saxons invaded London. It started to expand again under the Saxon kings. London was described as a...

Estonia topic

In 1920, by the Peace of Tartu, Soviet Russia recognized Estonia's independence. Political parties were abolished in 1934, and President Konstantin Päts instituted an authoritarian regime(reziim). A more democratic constitution came into force in 1938; but the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1939, placed the Baltic countries under Soviet control.Complete Soviet military occupation came in June 1940. Following elections in July, Estonia was incorporated into the USSR as a constituent republic. Over 60,000 persons were killed or deported during the occupation's first year. Estonian irregulars fought Soviet troops in June 1941 as part of the German invasion, and their support of the Nazis continued through 1944. Occupied by German troops during much of World War II, Estonia was retaken by Soviet forces in 1944, who killed or deported thousands of Estonians...

1 2.3.2. Detection of Salivary Cortisol Salivary cortisol was dectected using a commercially available ELISA (Salimetrics, LCC, USA). Briefly, a 96-well microtitre plate coated with monoclonal antibodies to cortisol was used. Cortisol standards (3.000, 1.000, 0.333, 0.111, 0.037, and 0.012 g/ml) and the unknown compete with cortisol linked to horseradish perxidase for the antibody binding sites. Following incubation (55 mins) the plate was washed to remove unbound material. Bound cortisol peroxidase was measured by the reaction of the peroxidase enzyme on the substrate tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). After incubation for 25 mins this reaction was stopped with 50 l per well of stop solution (H 2SO4). The colour change was measured on a plate reader at 450 nm. The cortisol peroxidase detected is inversely proportional to the amount of cortisol present. 2.4 Psychosocial procedure...
