The giver 1-6 chapter

Jonas has one younger sister, Lily. His family seems ideal. Each morning, they discuss their dreams that they had the previous night; during the evening meal, they share feelings about the events of the day, comforting and supporting each other according to the rules of the community. 2. What is the family's nightly ritual? It is a required ritual in which all family members have to tell how they were feeling that day. 3. Why had Lily been angry? Lily goes first by explaining the anger that she felt today when someone from a visiting group of Sevens, or seven-year-olds, did not obey the rules about waiting in line. She compares the boy to an animal, but she is not exactly sure what an animal is, and she recalls that she made a fist at him. 4. How do the parents explain the new boy's behavior? Lily's parents remind her of a past experience when she was a Six and had felt out of place

The Advantages and Disadvanatges of Having a Part Time Job

Part-Time Job During Studies. Many students work while attending school for many different reasons. It can be difficult to balance work and school, but it can certainly be done. Actually, there are many advantages such as earning money,a new experience and development of the organization skills. However, you should take into account some disadvantages, for instance, the lack of time and stress. Generally speaking, students can benefit a lot from part-time jobs. The first advantage is that students can earn money. Earning money by themselves is good way to learn how to be independent. Students don't have to ask money from the parents and they can see that earning money is not so easy. Second advantage is that students can acquire more experiences and polish their skills when taking part-time jobs. For example, if someone enjoys teaching, working part-time as a tutor may help him or her improve teaching skills and gain experiences.

first telephone. His mother and his wife were both deaf and that was the main reason which caused his interest to hearing devices. Bell invented the telephone by accident when he was trying to invent a device that could send more than one telegram at the same time. His research on hearing and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices which eventually culminated with the telephone in 1876. The first telephone didn't have a bell, so the caller had to tap the phone with a hammer to let the receiver know a call was being sent to them. It was Thomas Watson who invented the bell. Alexander Graham Bell founded The Bell Telephone Company in 1877 to build a nationwide telephone system. By 1881, there were 132 700 Bell telephones in homes. The telephone became one of the most popular methods of communication. People started writing

British landlords ruled small, unstable kingdoms and continued some Roman traditions of governance. In the mid-5th cent, Vertigern, a British leader, hired Germanic mercenaries to help defend against peoples of the north (Picts & Scots). In the end they revolted & the process of invasion and settlement began. The first Saxon ,,kings" were Hengist & Horsa in Kent, Aelle in Sussex, Cerdic / Cynric in Wessex. So the first ,,English" became mainly from Northern Germany & Denmark. The resistance of the Celts was long. They were free at the time, not like other Roman provinces on the Continent. Around 500, the Britons seem to have won several victories. One of their leaders was Ambrosius Aurelianus and one of their victories was at the place called Mount Badon. The

Differences between Estonian and USA school and education systems. Juhendaja: Koostanud: 2009 Differences between Estonian and USA school and education systems. Question is, how different are our own and this big country they call United States of America's education. Or maybe there is no difference at all, and our systems about school and education are more similar than they appear at first sight. After reading all the materials and all sorts of notes about USA's education systems and their school household. All at once I realized, that they are not so different at all. Like for example USA's kids have to go to school exactly the same amount of time as our Estonian children. And basically learn same amount of same things. Like everywhere there are always differences. Education in the United States is mainly provided by the public sector, with control and funding coming from

Book report/review "The Snow Child"

The Snow Child is a book by Eowyn Ivey. The author was inspired by the Russian fairytale Snegurotska while writing her debut novel. story takes place in Alaska 1920's and it talks about a couple, Jack and Mabel, who decide to make a snow girl out of snow. The next day the snow girl has become a real human being. Before Jack and Mable were living in Alaska they were living in Pennsylvania. They moved to Alaska to get away from the family, because they had lost their first child. It was hard for Mabel to recover there, because there were children around all the time. In Alaska they were living a very isolated life - no neighbours, no friends. In addition, at that time there did not exist such things as food shops, so they had to hunt all their food. Life was quite hard in Alaska and I am not so sure that it had a good influence on Jack and Mable, however it changed their life in a positive way. I believe that the

Television advertising has been a popular medium for large retailers ever since the TV first began to appear in living rooms. With the arrival of cable television came lowered production costs and the opportunity to reach smaller, more targeted markets, making it a viable option for small to medium-size businesses as well. To create an effective television ad, it's first necessary to have a good script that highlights a strong offer. Convicts worked on government land but since 1973 those who behaved well were freed and given land. The first free settlers arrived also that year. Relatively few new people were sent to Australia during the long wars with France from 1793 to 1815. The second governor was John Hunter in 17951800 and he was followed by Philip King. Under King the first colonists settled in Tasmania in 1803, Tasmania was then called Van Diemens Land. In 1813 a path was discovered through the Blue Mountains, that enabled them to spread inland. By 1825 the White population of Australia was about 25,000 with Tasmania having 4,500. The transportation location was again changed to Western Australia and it continued till 1868. The system of granting land ended in 1831. From then on land was sold.

fabric: shirts and married women's head-wear was mostly made from linen, while various outer garments, gloves, stockings and socks, were made from wool. The majority of the clothes remained undyed for a long time: linen garments were bleached white, while woollen outer garments were mainly sheep-brown or black. The wool for making skirts was dyed with herbal dyes. The bedstraw root was particularly widely used to produce red colouring. Indigo was the first dye to be widely bought during the 18th century. Today Estonian traditional costume is the most spectacularly exposed at "laulupidu", the national song festival, both on the stage and among the audience. Local differences were noticed by the first ethnographers describing Estonians. London

The Romans finally invaded Britain in AD 43 from Kent. The Romans lead by Julius Caesar attempted to invade Britain twice before that in 55 and 54 BC but the invasions were unsuccessful. They made their way to the river Thames and sailed up it. The Romans knew it was important to control a crossing point at the river Thames, so they decided to build a settlement on the north bank. Although small settlements had been built on the banks of the Thames, the Romans were the ones who built the first city. They called their city Londinium. The Roman engineers noticed that the point where the swampy river narrowed would make an ideal crossing point, they built London Bridge. Less than 20 years later the native Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against the Romans in revenge for mistreatment and burnt Londinium to the ground. The well disciplined Roman army defeated her forces and Londinium was rebuilt. By AD 100 it had also become the capital of the Roman province. A

Why do people have pets?

Firstly, a lot of old people keeps a pet at home to feel less lonely and to have a companion in their everyday life. Pets keeps occupied a lot of time of their days, doing things such as taking the pet out for a walk or play with them. Moreover, families too choose to have a pet in their lives for many reasons, for instance having their baby feel a lot more confident with animals. Historians don't know for sure when humans started keeping pets. Dogs were one of the first animals domesticated by humans and have been domesticated for some 10,000 years. According to ancient Egyptian law, taking the life of a greyhound warranted the same punishment as killing a man. As early as 3500 B.C., Egyptians were domesticating wildcats from Africa. They considered cats to be godesses pets. That ranked them above humans, making them the first to be saved if a house caught fire, before the people. As I see it, having a pet at home is a good thing to do

Two very different towns of Estonia

Two very different towns of Estonia I would like to write about two very different towns of Estonia. One is Paide and the second is Tallinn. These cities for most people, would be quite incomparable, but if you really are interested in Estonian culture, then you most certainly have to visit them both. Paide most often described as the center of Estonia, is one of the most historic cities in Estonia as its first mentioned in the writings as early as 1265, also it was one of the first cities in Estonia to receive ,,city" title as early as 1295.. Many would say that the city, now, is rather an rundown than an touristy city, but I most certainly believe that maybe although this city isn't even nearly close to being cosmopolitan it is one of the most interesting cities. It is nearly impossible to write about what's fascinating in Paide, but

Andy Dufresne - an intelligent, educated, kind, patient and intelligent young man. At first, it seems to us that it is nothing special in itself is not that fast breaks, but this is only a first impression. The film was nominated for seven awards "Oscar", but, unfortunately, but have not got anyone, but despite this, it still remains the best for me. I especially liked the one phrase in the movie "Hope - the best of things. It never dies" and its slogan "Fear - is shackles. Hope - is freedom". I would definitely recommend watching this awesome film.

Comparison of Estonian and British State system

Comparison of Estonian and British State system Iam here to talk about Estonian and British state system, which have some similarities and differences. First of all the regime: Estonia is a democratic republic when the United Kingdom is constitutional monarchy. The head of state in Estonia is president who currently is Toomas-Hendrik Ilves and the head of state in United Kingdom is queen Elizabeth the second. Estonian president has a serving time of 5 years then in United Kingdom monarch rules the country till he or she dies, of course there are special occasions for that too. Second of all I want to talk about parliaments: Estonian parliament is unicameral and has 101 members and is elected for four years, when the British parliament is bicameral and has 1455 members currently and is elected for five years. Bicameral parliament means that there are two separate assemblies. There are quite a few minor difference...

Marriage is an outdated institution

different from the meaning that expanded many years ago? Is this document which indicate the union of two people who have given a permission to love each other in sickness and in health, until the death do they part is the evidence of everlasting love? I think the answer for these questions is No and I would talk about my opinions why i think so. First of all, i think everyone know that the rate of divorces is quite high. For example, 50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce in America. There are many reasons why this happen and people get divorced. Infidelity, poor communication, change in priorities and cte. Nobody can't say that it does no happen to us, because we love each other so much. but never say never, because if your marriage ends you should know the cost of divorce and it could be a lot more than you may think. A lot of fees: lawyer's fees, court bills,

Studying abroad

Siret Valge 12 b Nowadays more and more people choose to study abroad or consider it. Studying abroad is good opportunity for everyone but it demands a lot of work and good foreign language. Obviously there are its advantages and disadvantages. First of all, people have to do a lot of work before they can study abroad. There are even some organisations, who help people get started studying abroad. For example in Estonia there is organisation named YFU , who helps people to get started in foreign country. YFU helps people to find a host family and school, but everything else is up to them. There are many advantages of studying abroad. For example it is a good opportunity to travel and get to know different cultures

Movie review

The film was directed by Lasse Hallström and it is a movie made from a book from Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. The key of the movie were love, war, loss, forgiveness. I liked the actors very much. The actors were Amanda Seyfried as Savannah and Channing Tatum as John. I liked Seyfried before I saw that movie, because she can play different roles and I believe her. She is a really good actor, not like most of the Hollywood actors. Tatum I saw acting the first time but I liked him too. They were really good together. Seyfried played a rich Southern girl who doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs and is spending her spring rebuilding houses for the poor people. Tatum plays a guy from Army who meets Savannah in the beach when Savannah lost her bag into the sea and John goes after that bag. I liked all the scenes of the movie. They were really well made and it was never boring. Savannah and John were together only two weeks and they fell in love

If I Were a Minister of Education

are too many of them. It looks like our country wants only graduates with vocational education, which I find really sad. If I were a minister of education I would do everything to help students to graduate gymnasium, not to popularise vocational schools. Students should have a chance to choose what path they want to follow but our country tries to mislead them. Also I would do everything to change the time of school's first lessons. Although it has not changed lately and it is 8 o'clock like it has been for years, I think that it is a little too early. If one or two of my first lessons are cancelled I am much more alive in the lessons than I would be 8 o'clock. In conclusion I would say that schools have not changed much, but the attitude towards high schools should be modified. If I were a minister of education I would try to restore the reputation of

Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan) and three territories (Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut). Formally considered a constitutional monarchy, Canada is governed by its own House of Commons. While the governor-general is officially the representative of Queen Elizabeth II, in reality the governor-general acts only on the advice of the Canadian prime minister. History: The first inhabitants of Canada were native Indian peoples, primarily the Inuit (Eskimo). The Norse explorer Leif Eriksson probably reached the shores of Canada (Labrador or Nova Scotia) in 1000, but the history of the white man in the country actually began in 1497, when John Cabot, an Italian in the service of Henry VII of England, reached Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. Canada was taken for France in 1534 by Jacques Cartier. The actual settlement of New France, as it was then called,

grains. The region is rich in oil and natural gas. In fact, Canada is the second largest oil reserve holder in the world, after Saudi Arabia. Central Canada which includes Ontario and Quebec is not the geographical centre of Canada. It is called that because it has historically been the political and economic centre of the country. Central Canada is the most heavily populated and industrialised area. In there lie the Great Lakes the largest body of fresh water in the world. Some of the first settlements in Canada were, naturally, built around those areas. In the Atlantic Provinces, the most important activities include fishing and farming of all sorts. Also in the Atlantic Provinces are the Appalachian Mountains old and rounded mountains. The North is also comprised of three territories. The area has a varied landscape including mountains and plains. The climate there is extremely cold with long winters and a lot of snow. Much of the area is treeless tundra

I have read Stephenie Meyer's Twilight for three times already. The first time, I read it, I dug into it with little or no expectations, when it had just recently been published and had not yet become as immensely popular as it is right now, especially in Estonia, as it had not yet been translated. But the hype was already building up in American social networking sites, and since the book was already being referred to as the ´´next Harry Potter´´, I obviously had to read it.
