HISTORY The history of rail transport in Estonia starts in 1870 when a line was opened connecting Paldiski, Tallinn, Tapa and Narva; the line extending all the way to St. Petersburg in Russia. The first railway line to be built in Estonia was the Paldiski Tallinn Narva Gatchina line constructed in 1870; Baltic German nobility provided the impetus for the construction of the line, though because of the Russian influence the line was built to 1524mm gauge to connect with the line from St. Petersburg to Warsaw . The construction project was controlled by the Russian Ministry of Roads. The port of Paldiski was chosen because its southerly position made it ice free all the year round. Singing Revolution To the end of 80s, the Soviet Union folks didn't want to live under socialistic- communistic order anymore. The Soviet Union was protected with the Iron Curtain, which symbol was the Berlin wall. At the same time, not only Estonia, but also other countries that were under the authority of the Soviet Union, increased the independence efforts. People didn't want to live like this anymore, it was based on fear and commands. The start of the Estonian public announcement of the reindependence is probably the Singing Revolution. To begin with, the Singing Revolution was a non-violent wish expressing and embarked on the Soviet Union to fall apart. The Singing Revolution is a commonly used name for events
Estonian presidents Estonia has only had 4 presidents, since it's been a republic for little time. Konstantin Päts (1874-1956) was the first president of Estonia. His reign as a president started in 1938 and ended in 1940. Päts' political career started early. He served as a municipal advisor in 1904 and had many political positions after that. With his speech during the War of Independence he put a basis to Estonian economy. Päts' position as a president ended when Soviet Union occupied Estonia in 1940. Päts was forced to leave his office and was deported to Leningrad with his family. In 1941, he was arrested. In time he ended up in psychiatric hospital, where he died in 1956. They have changed our traditions and shown us the beauty of our homecountry through their writings. Lennart Meri Lennart Meri was a writer, film director and statesman who served as the second President of Estonia. Meri was a leader of the Estonian independence movement. His lifestory: Lennart Georg Meri was born in Tallinn, 29 March 1929, a son of the Estonian diplomat and later translator Georg Meri, and Estonian Swedish Alice-Brigitta Engmann. Because his father was a diplomat, Lennart left Estonia at an early age and studied abroad, in nine different schools and in four different languages. In addition to his native Estonian, Lennart Meri fluently spoke five other languages: Finnish, French, German, English and Russian. The family was in Tallinn when Estonia was occupied by the armed forces of the Soviet Union in June 1940 and in 1941, the Meri family was deported to Siberia. They came back to Estonia 1945. An Essay There are many different education systems in the world. Basics are pretty much the same, but ofcourse depending of the culture, the differences and interests of educating people, are big. Children go to school at age five in Great Britain, which is too early in my opinion. Most children in Estonia start school at age seven, only some of them at age six. I think starting with school and competition, rivalry, witch always associates with schooling, too young, shortens the childhood and may affect negatively self-esteem, success and coping in the future. Children´s job is to play, it develops child the best, so I think anyone shouldn't forbit humans inherent needs. Children don´t have to become too fast to an adult.

Georg Ots Georg ots sündis 25. märtsil 1920, sel aasatl kolis tema perekond Eestisse. Ta suri 5. Septembril 1975. Ta oli Eest tuntud ooperi laulja ja näitleja. Tema ema nimi oli Lydia Ots ja isa oli Karl Ots. Isa oli alguses Estonia koorilaulja, hiljem juba ooperi- ja operetisolist. Georgile oli siis Estonia majas juba lapsest saati viibinud. Ta õppis Tallinna Prantsuse Lütseumis, kus ta sai väga hea hariduse ja ta valdas mitmeid keeli. So it has two languages, two currencies and two cultures. Valga also has a rich history and a versatile cultural scene. Valga town is a pearl waiting to be discovered. In the south, Estonia shares a border with Latvia and here Valga town is split in half, the northern side, "Valga", belongs to Estonia and "Valka", on the southern side, belongs to Latvia. For years, this created a complicated situation where members of one family, even living on the same street, may have had different citizenships and had to go through customs and border guards in order to visit each other.

Survey Report To: My English class and teacher From: Subject: Upcoming Population Census The purpose of this report is to let you know about the statistics learned from a survey conducted by the research agency Factum & Ariko in October about the upcoming mandatory Census of Population and Housing. They questioned 500 people aged 1574 all over Estonia. 83% of Estonian's are aware of the upcoming Population and Housing Census and 95% consider the Census essential for Estonia. People consider the most important thing to be found out the real population number of Estonia (70% of people questioned) and the data collection about living conditions (37%). This shows people's interest and concern about the sustainability of Estonia. The electronic Population and Housing Census will take place during the first month of the Census and 2/3 of the people questioned are planning to use the opportunity to answer the questionnaires electronically.
