The euro in Estonia

Kati-Liis Karu 03.01.2011 The euro in Estonia Joining the European Union in 2004 made people in Estonia think about the changing of currency. We had almost six years to get used to the fact that the Estonian kroon is eventually going to end. In that time there was a lot of discussion about whether we should stick to the kroon or change our money to the euro. Lots of people were afraid that they lose their money during the period of transition - this belief was quite popular among people who still remember the time when the Russian rubles were changed into kroons and did lose much money

Decriminalizing Cannabis in Estonia

Decriminalizing Cannabis in Estonia. Estonia is the leading country in Europe with the highest number of drug fatalities per capita, deaths by fentanyl are raising and current drug policy is not doing its job. According to the most recent data, Estonia's overdose mortality rate is seven times the average in the EU. This is a big concern for a country as little as Estonia, and also a reason why the decriminalizing cannabis topic has grown so popular lately. Cannabis, as a soft drug, is criminalized in Estonia and that fact leads people to go after stronger drugs because by the law they are on the same scale. The popularity of “China white” is growing in Estonia, as it is so easily accessible, but so does the mortality rate because it is very easy to overdose on fentanyl. Estonia should re-

The Foundation of Estonia

The Foundation of Estonia Estonia The history of Estonia The history of Estonia is a part of the history of Europe. Estonia was settled near the end of the last glacial era, beginning from around 8500 BC. Before the Germans invaded in the 13th century proto-Estonians of the Ancient Estonia worshipped the spirits of nature. Since the Northern Crusades Estonia became a battleground for centuries where Denmark, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Poland fought their many wars over controlling the important geographical position of the country as a gateway between East and West. Being conquered by Danes and Germans in 1227, Estonia was ruled initially by Denmark in the north, by the Livonian Order, an autonomous part of the Monastic state of the Teutonic Knights and Baltic German ecclesiastical states of the Holy Roman Empire.

Environmental issues in Estonia

Environmental issues in Estonia The Earth is considered to be the most beatiful planets in the Universe. But our planet is threaten by environmental problems. Even a small country like Estonia can make difference. Our capital city is fighting against air pollution. But people produce much refuse and ways of recycling are getting old. Water pollution is also a problem in Estonia. We have factories that let their waste run into rivers. One of the biggest problems in Estonia is air pollution. Our air is polluted by exhaust fumes, because today we have a lot of cars, buses and other machines. In 2009 we had 407 cars to thousand inhabitants, which is lower than European Union average, but this number is still high. Because cars produce gases that contain carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide in the air causes global warming, which is the result of the greenhouse effect. Tallinn wants to fight against it by offering public transportation for free, to Tallinn citizen

Eating habits in Estonia

Traditional Estonian food has its roots firmly in the countryside, relying heavily on pork, potatoes and garden variety vegetables. The main culinary influences were from Germans, who ruled over Estonia for so many centuries. The eating habits of the Estonian population are related to the season, which severely affect the availability of fresh food. The spring and summer are the seasons of fresh food, in this period are used vegetables, berries and herbs, with the warmer climate the Estonians also like to cook meat grilled outdoors. During the winter are used mushrooms, jams, and preserved foods. Among the typical Estonian dishes

Report

Estonians average monthly wage is 792 EUR, which means that the average monthly wage is bigger only than in Latvia. Other European Union countries have higher average monthly wages. Small salary is accompanie by aging. That is because families with smaller income do not want to have children, because they can not adequately care for them. That is the reason why the growth of population is so low. In conclusion I would like to say that even though Estonia has put much effort into developing it's IT-sector, its wages still are below the European average. That results in other problems as for example to dropping of the population growth. Estonia is still developing and there is still a long way to go, to catch up to other European countries.

Interview with Chinese lecturer

INTERVIEW: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TEACHING IN CHINA AND IN ESTONIA According to a Chinese language lecturer of a University in Estonia, teaching in China and teaching in Estonia does have some differences. The lecturer received a BA from Shanghai Teachers' Collage and MA in Education from Boston University. She has taught overseas students for 3 years in Guangxi University in China before coming to Estonia in 2013. Since then she has taught in various universities in Tallinn. In her opinion the main differences that affect the teaching of Chinese in China and Estonia are the purpose of teaching, the authority that the teacher has, and the language environment of the country. In Estonia one of the main purposes of teaching Chinese is to increase the knowledge of China and Chinese culture in addition to the teaching the language. In China on the other hand

Benefits and drawbacks about Estonia

Estonia is divided into 15 counties which are divided in turn into 207 rural municipalities and 47 towns. The Republic of Estonia, the northernmost and smallest of the three Baltic countries, is located on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea in the north-east of Europe. Lying between East and West, it has served as junction of international trade routes for centuries. Moreover, Estonian neighbours are Russia and Latvia. Estonia is accessible, both from a logistical and social point of view - Tallinn is within 3 hours flight from major European capitals and the power distance is very low. In the west, the coast of Estonia is washed by the Baltic Sea. It is a land of great natural beauty with a long and varied history and rich culture. That's their nature especially concerning national symbols such as their music or their language. Even if Estonia is tiny, it still offers a breathtaking amount of nature

Autumn is very similar to spring. There are rather icy and wet. Winter is very crafty, some days temperature can be around 5 degrees below zero, but sometimes can be 20 degrees below zero

Minu muusikaelamus: Vene heliloojate teosed Estonia teatris

Minu muusikaelamus Minu suurimaks elamuseks kujunenud kontsert toimus 17. novembril Estonia kontserdisaalis, kus Eestit külastas Moskva Filharmoonia Akadeemiline Sümfooniaorkester, legendaarse dirigendi Juri Simonovi juhatusel.

Enivornment in Estonia - Problems and solutions

Environment in Estonia Nowadays environmental problems are too big to be managed by individual persons or individual countries. In other words, it is an international problem. But what are the biggest problems in Estonia, why and how people could solve it? Air, water, and land pollution rank among Estonia's most significant environmental challenges. The combination of 300,000 tons of dust from the burning of oil shale by power plants in the northeast part of the country and airborne pollutants from industrial centers in Poland and Germany poses a significant hazard to Estonia's air quality. Estonia's water resources have been affected by agricultural and

If i were the minister of Estonia

If I were the minister of education in Estonia. Many people think that our school system is out of date and we should make it more modern. Even teachers and students say that some changes need to be made. Maybe our government should consultate more with poeple who know the real situtation when they create new laws. If I were minister of education I would deffenetly prefere American educational system to Russian. Because our new generation of children use English a lot more than Russian

How does the United States influence Estonia?

How does the United States influence Estonia? United States of America is one of the most influencial countries in the world. It influences the whole world with their political views, military forced etc. To my mind, one of the biggest influences that the United States has on us is the language. Estonian language surely is very beautiful but has a lot of loans from other languages. Also in colloquial language, especially with the younger generation, we switch a lot of words. Like instead of saying "vabandust" we say "sorry".

What Pleases Me about Life in Estonia

What Pleases Me about Life in Estonia Many peole have said, that they do not like living in Estonia. I am one of them, although many people have tried to persuade me to think otherwise. I have loved on both sides of Europe both on the eastern and on the northern part. But there are, of course, some advantages in living in Estonia, too. The first one is definately my family and friends. It is good to live in a country when you know, that you have your loved ones by your side. They can help you in every situation or even when you have nothing to do and you need some entertainment. Also, when your problems seem to grow over your head and you feel that you need to share them with someone. The second good thing about living in Estonia is the nature. We have many beautiful places in

NO72: The Rise and Fall of Estonia - retsensioon

The Rise and Fall of Estonia NO99 Käisin 5. detsembril vaatamas NO99 teatri etendust "NO72: The Rise and Fall of Estonia". Elus esimest korda Nokia kontsertsaali sisendes olin kohe meisterlikult seatud konksu otsas: kurb hakkas.

inglise keeles Eesti tutvustus: Project: Estonia

The local cultural heritage offers as much variety as the nature. Many rare work and mythological motives are retained in folk songs. The flax-growing that spread rapidly in the beginning of the 19th century was the basis of the prosperous Mulgi family farms in Southern Viljandimaa. 19. The second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century constituted the golden age for many local families. The mulgi inhabitants were actually the first farmers in Estonia who bought the farms for their families after being released from the servitude. The farming was developed rapidly thanks to flax-growing. The wealthiest farmers gained even so much money that for the first time in history Estonian farmers became owners of mansions. The wealthy mulk were the first of Estonian farmers to build manses, until then the farmers all over Estonia lived in farmhouses that included a barn so that people and animals lived under one roof

Two very different towns of Estonia

Two very different towns of Estonia I would like to write about two very different towns of Estonia. One is Paide and the second is Tallinn. These cities for most people, would be quite incomparable, but if you really are interested in Estonian culture, then you most certainly have to visit them both. Paide most often described as the center of Estonia, is one of the most historic cities in Estonia as its first mentioned in the writings as early as 1265, also it was one of the first cities in Estonia to receive ,,city" title as early as 1295.. Many would say that the city, now, is rather an rundown than an touristy city, but I most certainly believe that maybe although this city isn't even nearly close to being cosmopolitan it is one of the most interesting cities. It is nearly impossible to write about what's fascinating in Paide, but
