Other vowels are placed on the vowel chart using these cardinal vowels as landmarks. Cardinal vowels are: [i]; [e]; []; [a]; []; []; [o]; [u] Six short vowels are: as in cat e as in bed ý as in bit as in cut as in put as in pot Five long vowels are: i: u: : : : Short and long vowels differ phonetically: in quality in length (the duration of articulation) Comparing English and Estonian vowels: both languages have short and long vowels, but English vowels also differ in quality, thus they are marked by different symbols. Pitch (tone) the auditory property of a sound that enables a listener to place it on a scale going from low to high, without considering the acoustic properties such as the frequency of sound. To produce a stressed syllable one may change the pitch, make the syllable louder, make the syllable longer. Fixed stress always word-initial (Czech, Hungarian), always word-final (Turkish, French), penultimate (Polish). Dynamic stress Russian, English Tone languages Somali, Mandarin Stress-timed languages syllables may last different amounts of time, but stressed syllables appear at a roughly constant rate. Non-stressed syllables are shortened to accomodate this. Syllable-timed languages every syllable is perceived as taking up roughly the same amount of time. Writing a formal letter in english about a newspaper ad

" In an indirect question with IF: if, alus, öeldis. For example: "The advertisement did not mention if(IF) the flat(A) is(Ö) available." 5. Newspaper's name in the first paragraph. If there's not said in which newspaper the advertisement was, it is good if you could make one up. Estonian newspapers are written without an article. For example: in Postimees, in Päevaleht. English newspapers are written together with an article. For example: in The Times, in the Sun, in the Independent, in the Guardian. In case you want to emphasize date when the newspaper was written, do not use any articles. For example: "I am writing to you regarding to your advertisement, which I saw in yesterday's Times." If we use "yesterday's", we can't use an article. If we do not use "yesterday's", we...

They migrated westward to the Baltic shores some 5, 000 years ago. In the ninth century A.D. Viking ships invaded Estonia and the country became a vital link in the sea-trade between East and West. By the 12th century, the Arabian geographer al-Idrisi had placed the city on his maps. In the 13th century, Tallinn joined the Hanseatic League, the union of European commercial towns that stretched from London to Novgorod. Pärnu, Viljandi and Tartu were also members. Estonia became a vital link in the sea-trade between East and West. The oldest preserved book written in Estonian, a catechism, dates from 1535. English Parliament and Elections

There are offices, committee rooms, restaurants, bars, libraries and even some places of residence. Two large rooms: The House of Lords meet in one and the House of Commons in the other. The British Parliament is divided into two houses, but the House of Commons is obviously more important and only they are considered to be the MPs. In the House of Commons there are just two rows of benches facing each other. On the left sit the members of the governing party and on the right sit the opposition. The Speaker sits between them and controls the action. The arrangement of the benches encourages confrontation between the government and the opposition. There is no place for somebody who isn't neither in the opposition nor in the government side. Usually peeps like this sit in the opposition furthest from the Speaker. || The...

English literature

3. The Gen. Charst. Of OE poetry and prose. The distinction between verse and prose is by no mean always clear in that period of time. Anglo-Saxon verse is the product of a tradition which reached far back into pre-literate times and which was challenged and eventually replaced after the Conquest by a quite different tradition, so to say Eng poetry began with an end. But by contrast, the earliest monuments of English prose represent the true beginning of a tradition of written prose. But indeed the only work of prose which can claim a foothold of English literature is `Mandeville's Travels' and it's translated from the French. With the religious works bulk much larger and important writers are Thomas More, Jeremy Taylor, etc. The main tradition of vernacular prose began in England in late 800s with the Anglo-Saxon chronicle and with the group of translations made or inspired by the king himself...

Everyone should be made to learn English

In present society we have to, at least, know basic English, because nowadays it plays a major international role and everything is based on English. Nowadays you can go almost everywhere and you can (make through everything when you know some English. For example; It is a whole lot easier to find a job, read English literature in the original. If you know the language of the country, where you're travelling to, it will be easier to go there. Knowledge of foreign languages helps us to develop friendship and understanding among the other people and it is easy to find and visit such camps and speak with people who do not know Estonian. Also you can read something and also understand films without any help. I find that English connects different people and helps us to feel like a big...
