Tartu ajalugu

Bridges Tartu Stone Bridge In the 18th century the first stone bridge in the Baltics was built at the end of the Town Hall Square, with two triumph arches and a lifting centre, which was dedicated to Catherine II and was opened for traffic in 1784. The bridge was destroyed in World War II, now it can only be admired by way of the model bridge, which was created in 2004. Tartu was hit by a great fire in 1775, during the course of which a large part of the city center burned down. Catherine II ordered the restoration of the town and assigned 25,000 rubles for building the stone bridge. The bridge was meant as her gift to the town of Tartu. Preparatory work was begun in the spring of 1776, and the bridge was completed and opened for traffic in 1784. The Stone Bridge became one of the symbols of Tartu. In 1941 the Soviet forces blew up the bridge, and in 1944 the last remaining part was destroyed.

Nali: The World According to Student Bloopers

The Indian squabs carried porposies on their back. Many of the Indian heroes were killed, along with their cabooses, which proved very fatal to them. The winter of 1620 was a hard one for the settlers. Many people died and many babies were born. Captain John Smith was responsible for all this. One of the causes of the Revolutionary Wars was the English put tacks in their tea. Also, the colonists would send their pacels through the post with- out stamps. During the War, Red Coats and Paul Revere was throwing balls over stone walls. The dogs were barking and the peacocks crowing. Finally, the colonists won the War and no longer had to pay for taxis. Delegates from the original thirteen states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a Virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin had gone to Boston carrying all his clothes in his pocket and a loaf of bread under each arm

Having a mistress was an accepted custom because marriages were usually business arrangements, not for love, and the men expected their wives to be passive and innocent lovers. Men took fencing lessons, went horseback riding, dancing, or played cards. He would fight duels if necessary and preferred to die rather than be dishonored. Girls needed a dowry and had to marry before they were twenty-five years old. They usually had a "coming out" during an evening at the Theatre d'Orleans, which marked the beginning of their search for a husband. The whole family attended the performance and sat in a box. Young men who were interested in the girl stopped by the box to pay their respects. They had intermediaries talk to the father and ask if they would be permitted to call on the girl at home. The first formal visit was brief, with the girl's mother and perhaps other relatives in attendance who would find out the young man's intentions

First off I strongly recommend you to have a good night sleep the night before your exam. Study everything you might need but try not to overdo the studying. Crime in Estonia

The trend was started by Raivo Roosna and Aleks Lepajõe who robbed the Tillander store in Helsinki in 1985. In December 2006, it was estimated that Estonian criminals were responsible for 140 robberies of jewellery and watch stores in Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Sweden during the last three years. The value of the lost property is estimated to be 25 million Euros.[1] Today transnational Estonian organised crime is predominantly about smuggling drugs, alcohol, and other illegal or high-tax goods from Russia to Finland, Sweden, and elsewhere in the Baltic Sea. Estonia is a relatively safe country, although there are some situations, where people should be more careful crime has been increased lately. We could count different type of crimes, but most common are smuggling and robberies. Many people like something, what do not belong to them. On the one hand, ...

Planet venus

Roman goddess of love. It is the second-closest planet to the Sun and it`s often called Earth's "sister planet," because the two are similar in size, gravity, and bulk composition. Because of these similarities, it was thought that Venus might even have life. Venus is also called the Morning star or the Evening star, because it reaches its brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset. It is the brightest object in the sky except for the Sun and the Moon. During the last few years the scientists have found that Venus and Earth are very different. It has no oceans and is surrounded by a heavy atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide with virtually no water vapor. There are strong winds at the cloud tops but winds at the surface are very slow, no more than a few kilometers per hour. The surface of Venus retains a constant temperature between day and night and between the equator and the poles. We can't

Advantages and disadvantages of taking a cap year - essay

school to have a little longer holiday after being in school for twelve or more years. But, is it the best choice? What good or bad could that do? For sure one year makes a difference, it can make people lazier, but it can also give time to think about his/her future plans. There can be many reasons for a gap year: money, people go to work or some people go to the army for not taking a year for the army during studies in the university or just being tired of school. I think that a gap year is almost the only option for a young person to have a little rest, to enjoy young life, because life never becomes easier and the next chance to stretch out could be when we reach our pension time. To go on a bit longer holiday abroard with best friends is for sure expensive, but I think that it would be the time to remember. A gap year can change

Protestant and an eastern Orthodox Church. Like the mainstream culture in the other Nordic countries, Estonian culture can be seen to build upon the ascetic environmental realities and traditional livelihoods, a heritage of comparatively widespread egalitarianism out of practical reasons (see e.g.: Everyman's right and universal suffrage), and the ideals of closeness to nature and self-sufficiency. Estonian culture developed in earnest during the nineteenth-century period of national awakening. Elements of Estonian peasant culture, such as songs and folktales, were brought together by the country's first cultural elite after 1850. Between 1857 and 1861, Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald compiled and published the Estonian national epic, Kalevipoeg (Son of Kalev), which was based on various folklore themes. Written in verse, the epic tells the story of Kalevipoeg, the mythical ancient ruler of Estonia.

into a series of holes on a golf course using the fewest number of strokes. While the modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland, the game's ancient origins are unclear and much debated. Some historians trace the sport back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. One theory asserts that paganica spread throughout Europe as the Romans conquered most of the continent, during the first century BC, and eventually evolved into the modern game. A golf course consists of a series of holes, each with a teeing ground that is set off by two markers showing the bounds of the legal tee area, fairway, rough and other hazards, and the putting green surrounded by the fringe with the pin (normally a flagstick) and cup. A typical golf course consists of 18 holes, but nine-hole courses are common and can be played twice through for a full round of 18 holes.

The United States of America

The USA expanded westward in the 1800s and reached the Pacific Ocean. As it grew, it became the greatest industrial power in the world. It wanted to stay out of European problems, but in the two World Wars, it decided that it could not afford to let Germany win. In the 1940s it became the leader of the West and organized an alliance of the democracies. Today it is the only superpower left in the world. Tensions between American colonials and the British during the revolutionary period of the 1760s and early 1770s led to the American Revolutionary War. On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress, convening in Philadelphia, established a Continental Army under the command of George Washington. Proclaiming that "all men are created equal" and endowed with "certain unalienable Rights," the Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, drafted largely by Thomas Jefferson, on July 4, 1776. choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he did not introduce new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivalled control of harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected throughout Europe during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognised as a great composer until a revival of interest and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now regarded as the supreme composer of the Baroque, and as one of the greatest of all time. Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Saxe-Eisenach. He was the youngest child of Johann Ambrosius Bach, the director of the Stadtpfeifer or town musicians, and Maria Elisabeth Lämmerhirt

Manners in Estonia

Those in senior positions bear the responsibility to make decisions in the interest of the group. Due to seniority titles are very important when addressing people. It is expected that you will use a person's title and their surname until invited to use their first name. Cultural Traditions Estonian culture as an identity is very strong. Oral traditions especially have played a key role in preserving traditions, stories and customs during Soviet administration. Singing is a very Estonian activity and the Estonians are known to have sung their way to freedom during the "Singing Revolution" of 1989-91. Manners Estonians on the whole are quiet and reserved. They tend to speak softly and do not like to draw attention to themselves. Being rational, calm and not going to emotional extremes are all qualities that respected. At first Estonians can come across as aloof. Once a relationship warms up this becomes less so.

The art of dance

Chinese and Japanese song and dance dramas. [3] Dancing has been one of the most popular way to have a good time and to entertain someone. It’s a cultural representation, which involves dancers, choreographers, audience, patrons and impresarios. Dance traditions may be limited to one culture, but they all develope. Ballet is an example of a highly developed Western form of dance that moved to the theatres from the French court during the time of Louis XIV. Some dances, such as the quadrille, a square dance and other country dances were once popular at social gatherings, but are now rarely performed. On the other hand, many folk dances have evolved into competitions, which by adding to their audiences, has increased their entertainment value. Still, there’s some dance styles that might not be approved by society. Since dance is often associated with the

Essey: How does the United States influence Estonia

Americanization is taking place all over the world. We could say, that we are just dealing with globalization, but since the most influence apparently comes from US and not equally from the rest of the world, I would say we rather deal with Americanization. Language is unquestionably an integral part of culture and through language people recognise their national identity. Until the 20th century, our mother tongue was most influenced by German language. During the first half of 20th century, Estonian language was closer to Finnish and the second half of 20th century was dominated by Russian influences. In the 21th century, however, Estonian language has been stoutly impacted by English. Some people are very protective and resolute about preserving Estonian language with its linguistic diversity just as it is without any foreign influences. Some say that it is only natural that every language changes, picking up bits and pieces of other languages

mono- or multi-species composition, size, value and distribution (e.g. in the coastal areas or high seas). High seas resources such as tuna or marine mammals require international collaboration for their management. There is no comprehensive global database on fish stocks and FAO has initiated a global inventory of fish stocks with their main characteristics. Their monitoring and the assessment of their state within an ecosystem perspective need significant improvement. During Soviet period (1944-1991) fish farming developed rapidly since the end of 60- s and reached its peak in 1990 with 1743 tons of fish for consumption, which consisted mainly of common carp (917 t) and large rainbow trout (734t). Estonia is a northern country where the vegetation period is short (3-4 months) and thus the water temperature is a limiting factor of fish farming. Therefore the heated effluent waters of the electric power plants were successfully used to prolong the growth period

Palm oil

A large proportion of palm oil expansion occurs at the expense of biodiversity and ecosystems in the countries it is produced. Currently, a third of all mammal species in Indonesia are considered to be critically endangered as a consequence of this unsustainable development that is rapidly encroaching on their habitat. There are over 300,000 different animals found throughout the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra, many of which are injured, killed and displaced during deforestation. In addition, palm oil development increases accessibility of animals to poachers and wildlife smugglers who capture and sell wildlife as pets, use them for medicinal purposes or kill them for their body parts. The destruction of rainforests in Borneo and Sumatra is therefore not only a conservation emergency, but a major animal welfare crisis as well. Wildlife such as orangutans have been found buried alive, killed from machete attacks, guns and other weaponry

Carl Lewis

He arrived in Japan as the number two of the sprint and the best of the long jump for 1 centimeters. Well, he came out from Japan as the number one of the sprint through a fantastic world record (9"86) and the number two of long jump, as the 8,95 of Mike Powell didn't give him any chance though e reached the measure of 8,91 (windy)! And so finished his record of victories in a row: 65. In 1992 Carl prepared the Olympic games but a strange thyroid's problem made him become weaker during trials and failed the qualifications in the 100 m and 200 m. So he had just the time to beat Powell for three centimeters (but with a set of jumps rather better) and win 4x100 relay achieving the 8th gold medal in the Olympic games. Then the last years before the Olympic games of Atlanta showed his poorest figures of the career. At Stuttgart he's third in 200 m and 4th in 100 m (he lost, in that season, all the races on 100 m). His apparitions are

city under Danish king Canute and forced the then-English king to flee. Years later, following a victory at the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror was crowned King of England in the newly-finished Westminster Abbey in 1066. William granted the citizens of London special privileges while building a castle in the corner of the city to keep them under control. This castle was expanded by later kings and is now known as the Tower of London. The city grew in wealth and population during the Middle Ages. In 1100 its population was around 18,000 but after 200 years it had grown to nearly 100,000. However disaster struck during the Black Death, when London lost nearly a third of its population. After the defeat of the Spanish Armada, stability in politics allowed the city to grow even more. In 1603, James VI of Scotland came to the throne of England, essentially uniting the two countries. An assassination attempt was made on him on the 5th of November in 1605, now known as the

The castle’s area is approximately 484,000 square feet (44, 955 square metres). The castle has been garrison fortress, home, official palace and sometimes prison for most of the Kings and Queens of England/Great Britain. During the war, the castle has been heavily fortified but when country has been in peace, it has been expanded with large and grand apartments and this pattern has continued nowadays. They are a part of British coastline facing France and the Strait of Dover. The cliffs owe its impressive façade to its composition of chalk

Irish Potato Famine

Irish Potato Famine During the 19th century, 2/3 of the Irish people lived in very poor conditions under the British rule they had to work for upper-class English landlords, who never set foot in Ireland. The work was to raise crop for a tiny piece of land (most of tenants had less than an acre) where they could grow food (potatoes) for their own families. Potatoes were grown because they have all the necessary vitamins in them and only the potatoes would suffice to feed a family when grown on such tiny holdings. In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and people would pray for the next years' crop to be a proper one but it was even worse and on top of that, the winter of 1846 was the "severest in living memory". The crop, which previously had provided 60% of the nations' food...

Meg Gabot

Meg's Biography Meg Cabot was born on February 1, 1967, during the Chinese astrological year of the Fire Horse, a notoriously unlucky sign. Fortunately she grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, where few people were aware of the stigma of being a fire horse-at least until Meg became a teenager, when she flunked freshman Algebra twice, then decided to cut her own bangs. After six years as an undergrad at Indiana University (a college to which she was only accepted because her father taught there), Meg moved to New York City (in the middle of a sanitation worker
