The Act also increased the number of individuals entitled to vote, increasing the size of electorate by 5080%, and allowing a total of one out of six adult males to vote, in a population of some 14 million. Up to nowadays Queen Victoria was married to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha son of Duke Ernst I of the small German duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her descendants were also members of the ducal family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a minor branch of the thousand- year-old House of Wettin. It was Victoria's desire that her son rule as a member of the House of Wettin, instead of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, because she felt the older name would conjure images of the shared Saxon heritage of Germany and England. However, the name Wettin was never widely accepted

Jazz

Jazz Jazz is a type of lively music with strong, complex rhythms. It's earlier expression is said to be ragtime. Jazz was first played at the beginning of the 20th century by black musicians in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jazz began with a basic trio of musicians: a cornet, a trumpet or a violin and a trombone. Below this there was a guitar or a banjo, sometimes a piano and drums. Jazz musicians often accent or add notes or beats in unusual or unexpected places. Also they add other elements of black music such as blues and ragtime to make a unique American music form. Musicians make up tunes as they play. Jazz music has changed, and today there are many different forms of Jazz. Ragtime, famous musicians from that time are Irving Berlin, Ben Harney, Scott Joplin. Then there are dixieland famous musicians from that period is Louis Armstrong. In the 1920-s to the 1930-s there were European jazz and...

English language history

Old English ( 450-1100 AD) The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. Native English speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English. Old English was spoken until around 1100. Middle English (1100-1500) In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy invaded England. The new conquerors brought with them a kind of French and there was a period where the lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th century English became dominant in Britain again, but with many French words added. Modern English Early Modern English (1500-1800) Towards the end of Middle English the change in pronunciation started, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter

Dzässi levikut hõlbustas ka tehnika areng, tol ajal anti välja esimesed vinüülplaadid, dzässmuusika salvestati esmakordselt plaadile The Original Dixieland Jass Band'i poolt 1917 aasta alguses.

Sandrigham house

Sandringham was the setting for some dramatic events. Queen Victoria did not pay her first visit to Sandringham until 1871, when the Prince of Wales suffered an attack of typhoid fever (the illness of which his father had died) while staying there. Margus Maasik G1a To the relief of Queen Victoria and the nation, the Prince survived and made a slow recovery. The eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales was not so lucky 21 years later. Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, in the direct line of succession, fell ill at Sandringham shortly after celebrating his 28th birthday there. He died on 14 January 1892 after a violent bout of influenza. Sandringham became the home to a second Royal couple when Prince George, the second son of the Prince and Princess of Wales and by then heir to the throne, married Princess May of Teck, the fiancée of the late Duke of Clarence. They moved into a house on the estate which came to be known as York Cottage

known to man. It was introduced in the ancient Greek Olympics in 688 BC. Ever wonder why they call them boxing "rings", even though they are square? In Ancient Rome, boxing rules were introduced and competitors were required to remain within a circular ring drawn on the arena floor. They have been known as "rings" ever since. The first modern boxing match took place in Britain when Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle engineered a bout between his butler and his butcher with the latter winning the prize. Early fighting had no written rules. There were no weight divisions or round limits, and no referee. The first boxing rules, called the Broughton's rules, were introduced by champion Jack Broughton in 1743. JAMES FIGG James Figg was the first heavyweight champion. He opened the first fighting academy in London. In 1992 he was inducted into the International Hall of Fame as the "Father of Boxing"

The Norman Conquest

to realise that at this time there was little or no idea of nationalism. William controlled two large areas: Normandy, which he had been given by his father, and England, which he had won in war. Both were personal possessions, and it did not matter to the rulers that the ordinary people of one place were English while those of another were French. To William the important difference between Normandy and England was that as duke of Normandy he had to recognise the king of France as his lord, whereas in England he was king with no lord above him. The last Norman kings William II (Rufus) (1087 - 1100) When William died, in 1087, he left the Duchy of Normandy to his elder son, Robert. He gave England to his second son, William. William II was a short stout man with red face, from which came his nickname of Rufus. He was a strong king and ruled his subjects firmly.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE

BUCKINGHAM PALACE Buckingham palace is the official residence of the British monarch. The Palace is located in the city of Westminster. It is a setting for state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a rallying point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and crisis. The Buckingham palace is originally known as the Buckingham House. The building which forms the core of today's palace was a large townhouse. It was built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site which had been in private ownership for at least 150 years. It was subsequently acquired by George the third in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte and known as The Queen's House. During the 19th century it was enlarged, principally by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, forming three wings around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace finally became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837

The Old English is developed from their Germanic dialects. After that, came Christians and brought new words like martyr, bishop etc. The second and last conquest was in 1066, when the Duke of Normandie, also known as William the Conqurer, invaded England to claim his right to the throne. He was the one who estabilished the House of Normandy. He brought Old French to England making it the official language.
