Stress

Stress Stress is a necessary part of nature. It´s the organism´s defence mechanism for changes in the surrounding enviorment. Without it we could not survive. Stress has many effects on the body that are necessary for a reaction to the stressor. When an animal senses danger, it automatically triggers a fight or flight response. In case of a lifethreatening situation, stress is an invaluable ally. It can even motivate us to prepeare for upcoming challenges. But as we move further and further from our natural habitat, stress becomes more of nuisance than a lifesaver....

Pet therapy

In the eighteenth century an English doctor, William Tuke, filled the grounds of a hospital for mentally disturbed people with chickens, rabbits and goats. At a time when people were usually punished for strange behavior rather than helped, this was a radical new approach to treating the mentally disturbed. Tuke's idea was that patients could learn self-control by caring for creatures weaker than themselves.  This is an idea which has persisted. In New York, horses, cows, cats and dogs were recruited to heal soldiers who had been wounded during World War II. These animals comforted the traumatized and helped the battle-scarred to avoid becoming obsessed with their injuries.  During the 1970's, scientific interest was rekindled by a study that had originally set out...

My ideal house

My ideal house I would like to live in a place where there are some mountains with snow on top of them and a sea nearby because i like beaches and mountains. My house would be in the middle of them, so i could see the sea from one side and the mountains from the other side of the house. The house would have two floors and a basement because that's all i need. On the first floor, there would be the living room with a big tv and some antique furniture, the kitchen, also with antique style oven and etc. A bathroom with a large bathtub and sauna, plus there would be a porch looking towards the sea. On the second floor, there would be at least four bedrooms where my family/children would sleep...

Pros and cons of social networking

It is good that people can instant message with people all the time all over the world. It makes people feel like they are not alone. However the con to this is that social media causes people to spend less time interacting face to face. I think it’s not good because if they are always in social media talking with friends then people can’t interact with people outside the internet. If the people are not used to speaking in real life then it could be difficult to impress yourself with words to other people and because of this it could be difficult finding a job. Social networking sites help students do better at school. It helps students browse quickly the information they need and not waste time on searching from millions of books. It helps students do homework faster and then they can have free time to do hobbies. It could also provide distance learning due to sickness or travelling. But in the other hand it’s bad because...

English portfolio

In the course of this undertaking, numerous Estonian teachers who were also key figures in the national awakening process, were sacked because of their insufficient knowledge of Russian. This radical change constituted a heavy blow to the level of education amongst Estonians: 98% of recruits conscripted from Estonia in 1886 could read, whereas in 1901 the figure had dropped to 80%. Russian also became the language of administration in government and local government institutions and courts -- almost all German and Estonian employees were replaced with Russians without knowledge of any other language. Getting a job in a government office became very difficult for non-Russians. Many educated Estonians were compelled to leave their country and seek work in Russia: by the early 20th century, several Estonian colonies...

Sales Department 56 Sõbra St Tartu Dear Sirs In my letter on 15 January I asked about the wooden furniture and requested your newest catalogue. We need to have our rooms ready as soon as possible, but without the furniture it is not deal able. We know that everyone makes mistakes, but we were really grateful if you could send us the right catalogue. So we could place the order. Yours sincerely Ardi Harakas Managing Director...

Ghost Story

The whole family then went to see what was going on, when they opened the old squeaking garage door; they saw an old lady who was sitting in a chair rocking back and forth very slowly. The father went to the car and directed the cars headlights towards the lady, they saw nothing, when he turned the lights out again, and the lady appeared. He did it again, same thing happened. The family was stunned and scared. They drove away as quickly as they could and never went back to that house. They later found out that in the 19th century there lived a happy couple, but when the husband died, wife had gone crazy....

"Absolutely flat." 3) "Why did you let him go? You must have known I would want to see him." "What good would that have done?" "I could at least have assured him of my sympathy," said Lady Constance stiffly. "Yes, I suppose you could," said Lord Emsworth, having considered the point. "Not that he deserves any sympathy. The man's an ass." "Nothing of the kind. A most intelligent young man, as young men go." "Young? Would you call him young? Fifty, I should have said, if a day." "Are you out of your senses? How to make the world greener

Mars to start contaminating them also. Countries like China have taken measures to stop the population. A chinese family can only have one child and if they go above the limit they have to pay a fine even though richer families don't care much for that. So even though there's a very big fine about 90´000 families have gone over the limit and are under investigation. If we would all think globally instead of just ourselves or our country, we could keep the population growth under control. Countries who only think of rising their population percentage in the world listings do encourage families in having more children, but if instead of being a patriot of your country, why not be a patriot of the World?...

Tallinn

Its narrow cobbled streets, medieval buildings with various decorative elements, attractive weather-vanes and soaring spires are very special and draw visitors in large numbers. Only a few town in northern Europe have medieval districts as well preserved as in Tallinn. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The rest of the capital could be called the New Town, dating mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. Tallinn is a mixture of the modern and the medieval where tradition goes hand in hand with the most recent trends. Its cross-cultural history has given the city a special charm. It has about 30 museums, 25 galleries and 15 exhibition halls. Among its many twin towns and partners are Helsinki in Finland, Schwerin and Kiel in Germany, Stockholm and Malmö in Sweden, Gent in Belgium, Venice in Italy and Odessa in the Ukraine....

Viljandi

From the castle ruins the most beautiful view opens on the lake and its surroundings . History In 1211 the hill-fort of the estonians in viljandi was besieged by a joint army of germans, latvians, and livs. In 1283 the town received a charter from villekinus de endorpe, the master of the order. In 1470, johann woltus von herse, then master of the order, took up residence in the castle. In 1481, ivan iia of runnian laid siege to the castle but could not take it. After the great northern war the russians revoked local autonomy until 1783, when in the course of the regency reforms of the empress catherine the great viljandi became a district town. This involved the re-establishment of town bylaws. The economic and political importance of viljandi started to increase. the population, after decreasing in population and wealth, started to rise again, as handicraft, trading, and cultural life were revived....

Gym Hazards

Gym Hazards Working out is seen as one of the healthiest ways to exercise but still sometimes it could be more than your body can cope with. A young woman in her first aerobic class collapsed and passed out. All attempts to resuscitate her were futile. Born with a heart defect, she was risking her life when she pulled on her fitness gear. A whole range of things should be taken into account before starting a training but unfortunately, many fitness instructors still fail to take a detailed personal history of their clients....

Education

This is a truism, just like saying "reading is valuable." I imagine nobody complains about children spending too much time working. If anything the contrary complaint rings loudly. What I don't begin to know is the ideal breakdown, according to age, of reading, listening to instruction, and working or hands-on time. What about technology in excess? Before the age of printing and cheap paper, comparatively few people could become learned. Now, theoretically, our electronic age makes learning easier than ever. Well, technology is indisputably better. We can store and retrieve data much more efficiently. We can communicate in a flash. But still, at the basic level, we must be well grounded -- we must possess common sense, civil manners, frank discussion skills, reasoning abilities, and moral fiber. It is possible to be a technological genius, say a computer nerd, without social skills or civil conscience...

If I were the misiter on education

different educational movies. Doing the same thing from day to day is simply boring and some variety would surely increase students' interest in class. The third thing I would do to spice up life at school is organizing more fieldtrips. There are many different cultural and historical exhibits and museums kids may never visit unless they skip classes to do so. To sum up, I would say that although the Minister of Education could change a lot, our school life today is pretty good....

Irish Potato Famine

Irish Potato Famine During the 19th century, 2/3 of the Irish people lived in very poor conditions under the British rule they had to work for upper-class English landlords, who never set foot in Ireland. The work was to raise crop for a tiny piece of land (most of tenants had less than an acre) where they could grow food (potatoes) for their own families. Potatoes were grown because they have all the necessary vitamins in them and only the potatoes would suffice to feed a family when grown on such tiny holdings. In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and people would pray for the next years' crop to be a proper one but it was even worse and...
