Topic - Libraries

Introduction A library is a collection of books. Libraries are maintained by a public body such as an institution or an individual. These collections are used by people who choose not to (or cannot afford) purchase an extensive collection themselves or who need professional assistance with their research. However, with the collection of media other than books, many libraries are now also access points for maps, prints or other documents and artworks such as microfilm, audio tapes, CDs, cassettes and DVDs. So, modern libraries are being redifined as places to get access to information in many formats and from many sources. In addition to providing materials, they also provide the services of specialists who are experts in matters related to finding and organizing information, called librarians...

Bridges presentation

Figure 6 Bridgeport Bridge (1862), clear-spanning 208ft (63m) over the South Fork of the Yuba River near Grass Valley, California (USA), has two parallel trusses based on the Howe patent of timber and iron rods, flanked by solid wooden arches cut to the curves and reflected in the exterior siding. It is the second longest covered wooden bridge span in the USA, after the Blenheim Bridge (1855) in New York State, which is 210ft (64m). Jet Lowe, HAER Collection European engineers visiting the New World during the 19th century marvelled at the spans achieved by American timber bridges. Especially noteworthy was Louis Wernwag's 340ft (104m) arch truss of 1812, the "Colossus," over the Schuylkill in Philadelphia, the longest spanning bridge in the world at the time. Covered bridges, sheathed in wood to keep the structural timbers from deteriorating, are an icon of the American landscape. Outstanding spans that survive today include the Cornish-Windsor...

London - sillad, tornid, ajalugu

Each side of the now stone bridge also had a stone gatehouse. The South gatehouse was the site of a more gruesome period in the history of the London Bridge. A tradition of displaying the severed heads of traitors, impaled on tall spikes, was begun sometime in the 16th century. Heads were dipped in tar to provide protection from the elements, and at some point a collection of at least 30 heads was collected at the South gatehouse. Everyone from William Wallace of Scotland to Thomas Cromwell was displayed in the gatehouse, until the practice stopped in 1660 when King Charles II took power. Eventually, the houses on the bridge created a congestion that resulted in serious safety hazards. The houses and shops were no longer inhabited, and in the early 18th century a system of traffic was developed to maintain order on the busy structure. The...

Tallinn-topic

Among other functions, the church served as a burial ground for the rich and the noble. The church also features grave slabs, an oaken Baroque altar by Christian Ackermann and a number of monuments to famous people (e.g. Pontus de la Gardie. Karl Horn and Admiral Adam Johann Krusenstern). The church has also a valuable collection of Baltic- German noblemen's coats of arms, many of them were carved from wood by the famous Tallinn wood carver Christian Ackermann in the 17th century. Nowadays, the church has an Estonian Lutheran congregation and also serves as a concert hall. St. Nicholas' Church. In about 1230, quite a number of German merchants came over to Tallinn from Gotland at the invitation of the Order. They settled down outside the fortress, at the foot of the hill. They erected a chapel among their wooden houses...

Report to the Board of Governors

Introduction The main principal aim of this report is to describe a fund-raising day organised for disadvantaged children and to make some recommendations for the next year. Methods of fund raising Our charity organisation has been going in for collecting money to support disadvantaged children in Britain already for seven years. There are some verified ways to collect money, such as a street collection , house-to-house collection and jumble sales. A large amount of money was raised by the house-to house collection. It`s about a 40% of the whole money we got for these children. Also income from the street collection is really nice as well 30%. So, a 20% of the pie chart I made takes the jumble sale and 10% - other ways of collecting money. Overview This year it was decided to organise a fund-raising day for the charity. It was the nice and cheerful time. Many people agreed to become our volunteers this day...

American Literature Portfolio

Walter Whitman Walter Whitman (May 31, 1819 March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist, journalist, and humanist. He was a part of the transition between Transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. Born on Long Island, Whitman worked as a journalist, a teacher, a government clerk, and a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War in addition to publishing his poetry. Early in his career, he also produced a temperance novel, Franklin Evans (1842). Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass, was first published in 1855 with his own money. The work was an attempt at reaching out to the common person with an American epic...

Wuthering heights

Three years later, Catherine meets Heathcliff on the moors, and makes a visit to Wuthering Heights to meet Linton. She and Linton begin a secret romance conducted entirely through letters. When Nelly destroys Catherine's collection of letters, the girl begins sneaking out at night to spend time with her frail young lover, who asks her to come back and nurse him back to health. However, it quickly becomes apparent that Linton is pursuing Catherine only because Heathcliff is forcing him to; Heathcliff hopes that if Catherine marries Linton, his legal claim upon Thrushcross Grange--and his revenge upon Edgar Linton--will be complete...
