eyes of the grader. However, this relationship is not linear, but logarithmic.More specifically, it appears as if essay length is important up to a point, but beyond a certain theshold it carries little additional weight. Though this counting method is admittedly superficial, it is an indicator of sentence complexity, and is also tied 3 conceptually to the intrinsic characteristic of style. It is useful to note that this one prox is joined with a number of others to estimate the trin, and would not normally be used as a single indicator for the trait. As alluded to previously, the prox (or prox cluster) variables are regressed against the essay ratings (or in the case where the model is not formulated in an a priori basis, to select the variables and optimize the weights). The validation sample (e.g., 200 cases) is used to

Sustainability aspects of biofuels

3.3. Sugarcane Sugarcane grows only in tropical areas and it is a very efficient and productive crop for biofuels. Brazil is the major sugarcane producer, where the production of ethanol from sugar cane started in the 1980s and has grown to 22.24 billion liters in 2007 (Zuurbier, 2008). Sugarcane is used as a feedstock for producing bioethanol and the residual leftover bagasse - is used in heat and power generation. That is one of the characteristic that gives sugarcane production an advantage over other fuels. But sugarcane is also the major source of sugar in the world; about 80% of today's sugar is made from sugarcane, cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas of the southern hemisphere. In Brazil, however, sugarcane utilisation for biofuels does not pose competition for sugar production, as sugarcane occupies about 10% of the current planted area, and only 50% of it is used for ethanol feedstock. Sugarcane cultivation takes up only 2

The Medium Is the Message

technology. The essence of automation technology is the opposite. It is integral and decentralist in depth, just as the machine was fragmentary, centralist, and superficial in its patterning of human relationships. The instance of the electric light may prove illuminating in this connection. The electric light is pure information... It is a medium without a message, as it were, unless it is used to spell out some verbal a ad or name. This fact, characteristic of all media, means that the " Intent"_ of any medium is always .another medium. The content of writing is speech, just as the written word is the content of print, and print is the content of the telegraph. If it is asked, "What is the content of speech?," it is necessary to say, "It is an actual process of thought, which is in itself nonverbal." An abstract painting represents direct manifestation of creative thought processes as they might appear in computer designs

American Literature

Pattee notes that the short story suited Irving, who tended to write in "spurts and dashes": "He did not deliberately choose the shortened form: he fell into it automatically because of his temperament, his natural indolence that forbade longcontinued efforts, his powerful yet volatile emotions, and his early literary training in the school of Addison and Goldsmith and Dr. Johnson" (6). Another striking characteristic of Irving's writing is the preponderance of visual imagery. A painter himself, Irving often drew verbal pictures in his essays and stories, and the title of his most famous work makes a double reference to visual art: The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon. James Fenimore Cooper as the creator of the American historical novel. The depiction of the struggle of Native Americans against white colonisers in his Leather Stocking Tales (lecture)

Sunflower

The disk flowers are both male and female and are fertile. If you look closely at the center of a sunflower you can see that the disk flowers grow in a mesmerizing pattern of two opposite spirals. This is most easily seen either before the disk flowers open up or after the seed has set and all the accessory flower parts have fallen off. This is one of the more interesting patterns in nature. The rough-hairy quality of the Common Sunflower is characteristic of many members of its family. These little bristles probably serve two functions: to discourage plant- eating animals and to conserve water in the plant by limiting evaporation. Members of the sunflower family are popular with butterflies because the wide flower head makes a good "landing platform" and the numerous individual flowers make for a high probability of finding nectar. Monarch butterflies are commonly seen nectaring on sunflowers during

Romano-Germanic law is the most prevalent legal system in the modern world and the oldest in human history. A prominent example of civil law would be the Code Napoleon, named after French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Rather than a catalog of judicial decisions, the Code consists of abstractly written principles as rules of law. The civil law system is based on Roman law, especially the Corpus Juris Civilis of Emperor Justinian, as later developed by the Middle Ages. A second characteristic, beyond Roman law foundations, is the extended codification of the adopted Roman law, that is its inclusion into civil codes. The concept of codification was further developed during the 17th and 18th century, as an expression of both Natural Law and the ideas of the Enlightenment. This was a short overview of continental law, thank you for listening. Terms to explain: Criminal code - a set of principles relating to crime that are accepted and used by society or a particular group of people

Recall from basic optics that the image of a beam passi through a round aperture will form a characteristic pattern called an Airy disk. The FWHM (full-width half- maximum) center of the Airy disk pattern is a spot about 1.7 um wide and falls neatly on top of the pit track. T nulls in the Airy pattern are carefully situated to fall on the neighboring pit tracks. This minimizes crosstalk from neighboring pits[3]. D. CO 2diffusioon sõltub CO2 konsentratsioonist atmosfääris. Süsihappegaasi on õhus väga vähe. Tema kontsentratsioon on ainult umbes 15 µM, samal ajal kui enamik rakusiseseid metaboliite esineb millimolaarsetes kontsentratsioonides. Seetõttu on CO2 kättesaamine õhust üks peamisi fotosünteesi kiirust piiravaid protsesse. 76. Kirjeldage lehe kranz (pärg) tüüpi anatoomia The C4 plants often possess a characteristic leaf anatomy. Their vascular bundles are surrounded by two rings of cells, the inner ring, called bundle sheath cells, contain starch-rich chloroplasts lacking grana, which differ from those in mesophyll cells present as the outer ring. Hence, the chloroplasts are called dimorphic. This peculiar anatomy is called kranz anatomy, from the German word for wreath. that kind are sometimes called ideational theories. Ideational theories The whipping boy here is usually John Locke (1690/1955), since Locke seems to have held that the meanings of linguistic expressions are ideas in the mind. On this sort of view, what it is for a string of marks or noises to be mean- ingful is for the string to express, or somehow significantly correspond to, a content-bearing mental state that the speaker is in, an idea, an image, or perhaps a thought or a belief. What is characteristic of ideational theories as Traditional theories of meaning 67 I am using the term is that the mental states in question are actual states of particular people at particular times. If a string is meaningful in that it expresses an idea, one may then say that for two expressions to be synonymous is for them to express the same idea. For an expression to be ambiguous is for there to be more than one idea that it could express, and so on

(i.e. that found in colourpoint cats). To produce black and blue offspring, the x-colour must be genetically black (dominant to chocolate). Further test-matings upheld these conclusions. Self (solid) x-colour cats were born as poorly coloured black-silver or blue-silver tabbies. Their tabby ghost-markings faded as they matured and the colour became bright apricot to cinnamon colour with dark brown paw pads and nose leather with no black rim (a black rim is characteristic of silvers). Mating a self x-colour cat to a black-and-white and mating two self x-coloured cats together showed that the colours were not agouti (not ticked), but were new colours, now called Amber and Light Amber. Kittens are born dark and undergo a period of extreme brightening of the black/blue areas as they mature. Their original birth colour is often seen only on the back and tail, allowing amber and light amber to be distinguished from one another.

Study consists of measurements of 65 samples of pine collected in 2009 from named bogs. Measurements were made by LINTAB instrument and TSAPWin program. Samples were taken by drilling through the tree in two crossing sections. The samples were analysed in TSAPWin and Excel programs. Study shows that bog pines largest radial growth in bogs occur during 1962-1990. Named period ic characteristic for Puhatu and Kõrgesoo bog. In Selisoo the period of largest growth is shorter and began later. The main finding is similar to the measurments made earlier. Increase in radial growth is well associated with highest use of oil shale during the same period. The emission load decrease during last decades is clearly seen in our samples - yearly growth has dropped several times. The largest change occur in Kõrgesoo bog, where the yearly growth has reached the same level as before the year 1960

TheCodeBreakers

For 450 years, from about 1400 to about 1850, a system that was half a code and half a cipher dominated cryptography. It usually had a separate cipher alphabet with homophones and a codelike list of names, words, and syllables. This list, originally just of names, gave the system its name: nomenclator. Even though late in its life some nomenclators grew larger than some modern codes, such systems are still called "nomenclators" if they fall within this historical period. An odd characteristic is that nomenclators were always written on large folded sheets of paper, whereas modern codes are almost invariably in book or booklet form. The commercial code is a code used in business primarily to save on cable tolls; though some are compiled for private firms, many others are sold to the public and therefore provide no real secrecy. Most ciphers employ a key, which specifies such things as the arrangement of letters within a cipher

Canute held a considerable overlordship across other areas of the British Isles too. He divided his new kingdom into four parts and married the kings widow Emma in order to help legitimize his reign. By carefully selecting his advisors he became very well placed to command loyalty from both the Danish and the English. *The Vikings of Normandy Viking raids on England started in the late 8th century. Over- wintering in camps and the control of extensive areas of land became characteristic of Viking activity in England. English resistance was uncoordinated and often ineffective. 'England' was a region of several independent kingdoms - often at war with each other. Eventually, King Alfred was able to confront the Vikings at Edington. Alfred had to concede the northern and eastern counties to the Vikings, York became the capital of the Viking Kingdom of York. These areas were gradually reconquered and brought back under English control by Alfred's successors.

CLICK, WHIRR _ whose maternal instincts are under the automatic control of that single sound. The ethologists tell us that this sort of thing is far from unique to the turkey. They have begun to identify regular, blindly mechanical patterns of action in a wide variety of species. Called fixed-action patterns, they can involve intricate sequences of behavior, such as entire courtship or mating rituals. A fundamental characteristic of these patterns is that the behaviors comprising them occur in virtually the same fashion and in the same order every time. It is almost as if the patterns were recorded on tapes within the animals. When a situation calls for courtship, a courtship tape gets played; when a situation calls for mothering, a maternal behavior tape gets played. Click and the appropriate tape is activated; whirr and out rolls the standard se- quence of behaviors.

Then, too, in the case of a state in its external relations, the rights of war must be strictly observed. For since there are two ways of settling a dispute: first, by discussion; second; by physical force; and since the former is characteristic of man, the latter of the brute, we must resort to force only in case we may not avail ourselves of discussion. The only excuse, therefore, for going to war is that we may live in peace unharmed; and when the victory is won, we should spare those who have not been blood- thirsty and barbarous in their warfare. His fairly confusing inner monologue reflects the irrationality of people's thinking. Very often the monologues of his characters merge into his as the narrators. Sometimes it's difficult to draw the line between the characters monologue and the authors. His style reminds us labyrinth, which is very appropriate to his vision of the world, world where despair and doom are typical motives and where such events as civil war, suicide, murder, storms are rather typical and characteristic events. Man is faced with destruction. The fates of his characters are mostly tragic, it doesn't matter which persons they are, how high or low society or race. Apocalyptic landscape of the south. The defeated nature of southern history, it's great, rural and broken. He shows that all the traditions are broken, theres no continuity of the tradition. Faulkner expses the transformation of the land, and the decay of great southern family. Values have been lost due to civil war, sex roles, race

M o s t important is: W h a t is the character doing at the moment of entrance? T h e character's first action is a wonderful opportunity to speak volumes about his attitude, emotional state, background, strengths, and problems. T h e first action should be a model of the hero's characteristic attitude and the future problems or solutions that will result. T h e first behavior we see should be characteristic. It should define and reveal character, unless your intent is to mislead the audience and conceal the character's true nature. Tom Sawyer makes a vivid entrance into our imaginations because Samuel Clemens has painted such a character-revealing first look at his Missouri boy hero.

Presumably the transport image is a prototype of traditional symbols, such as a bird, the river, the road, the ship. The symbolic of gravestones sometimes speaks about the reason or a place of death of this person. Summing up, it is possible to tell that nowadays the funeral Estonian culture reflects its own time. There is traced the fast and practical way of life of a modern society, there are absolutely another characteristic, rather than to steam of decades back, welfare problems and values. The survey, which was spent by the author, has proved once again that the modern youth tries not to think of death. Often the young men do not know how it is better to arrive in the circumstances. For example, someone has died, and consequently try to concern them and to solve them from the neutral point of view. The organization of funeral (especially in cities) becomes more and more simple, and reminds object of sale

A New Earth

“wanting.” No ego can last for long without the need for more. Therefore, wanting keeps the ego alive much more than having. The ego wants to want more than it wants to have. And so the shallow satisfaction of having is always replaced by more wanting. This is the psychological need for more, that is to say, more things to identify with. It is an addictive need, not an authentic one. In some cases, the psychological need for more or the feeling of not enough that is so characteristic of the ego becomes transferred to the physical level and so turns into insatiable hunger. The sufferers of bulimia will often make themselves vomit so they can continue eating. Their mind is hungry, not their body. This eating disorder would become healed if the sufferers, instead of being identified with their mind, could get in touch with their body and so feel the true needs of the body rather than the pseudo- needs of the egoic mind.

CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

First of all, no matter what happens, look for the good in every sit- uation. Seek the valuable lesson. Look for what you can gain from any temporary setback or obstacle. Napoleon Hill studied and interviewed successful men and ccc_tracy_10_179-200.qxd 6/23/03 4:16 PM Page 197 Supercharge Your Thinking ➤ 197 women for 25 years. He found that they had one characteristic in common. Each of them had developed the habit of continually looking into every difficulty for the seed of an equal or greater ben- efit or advantage. They constantly looked for the silver lining of even their darkest cloud. When you are looking for something good to come out of every problem situation, you will respond to difficulties in a more posi- tive, creative, and constructive way

firmest reliance, and of his judgement the highest opinion. In understanding, Darcy was the superior. Bingley was by no means deficient, but Darcy was clever. He was at the same time haughty, reserved, and fastidious, and his manners, though well-bred, were not inviting. In that respect his friend had greatly the advantage. Bingley was sure of being liked wherever he appeared, Darcy was continually giving offense. The manner in which they spoke of the Meryton assembly was sufficiently characteristic. Bingley had never met with more pleasant people or prettier girls in his life; everybody had been most kind and attentive to him; there had been no formality, no stiffness; he had soon felt acquainted with all the room; and, as to Miss Bennet, he could not conceive an angel more beautiful. Darcy, on the contrary, had seen a collection of people in whom there was little beauty and no fashion, for none of whom he had felt the smallest interest, and from none received either attention or pleasure

Book Analog Interfacing to Embedded Microprocessors

can have in the PWM output is 1/256. If the PWM output is set to be ON when the counter is in states 0 through 99 and OFF for states 100 through 255, then we have a duty cycle of 100/256, or 39.06%. If we change this to ON for states 0–100 and OFF Appendix B 251 for states 101–255, then the new duty cycle is 101/256, or 39.4%. The change is .39%, or 1/256. This characteristic limits the precision with which a PWM-based controller can adjust its output. A linear system has nearly infinite control accuracy. Like any digital system a PWM controller has a limited resolution. Of course, an analog controller whose input comes from a microprocessor-controlled DAC has the same limitation. But the number of bits of resolution has to be taken into account when designing a PWM-based controller. One way around the resolution problem is to modulate the output. If our example
