It's helpful in that if you know how wide (or tall) the veneer is, you can easily make sure you have enough fluid in the chamber. It should be noted that if there is not a good seal between the site tube and the brass nipples, the site tube will not function correctly when vacuum is applied. If air can get in, the fluid in the site tube will just constantly be "pumped" up the site tube while the vacuum is on. Flats involve uncertainties. Uncetainties perhaps explain why the ,,communal" living expected of flatdwellers has been unsuccessful. Law and custom seem to support a clear separation between public and private. People who lives in public domain also have a lot of restrictions and dutyes. Although in the end Pilgrim will let Tom near him but that is all. Anyone else can't touch him. So Tom has to try another way and that isn't very nice to see. Conflict in this book is between Grace and her horse. Will they ever to be able to trust each other? At first she is sure that she is never going to ride but after trying with other horses Grace thoughts that she is ready to ride Pilgrim. But that is not so easy. The horse still doesn't let Grace near himself. But in the end the horse accepts and she can ride her loved horse again.
