Houses of parliament

The House of Lords decorated in scarlet and gold has all the grandeur one would expect in this chamber. This is where Her Majesty the Queen comes to open Parliament each November. Placed beneath a regal canopy, the gold throne which dominates the house is where the Queen sits to deliver the traditional opening speech. The Lord Chancellor sits opposite, on the famous Woolsack, this is a large scarlet cushion filled with wool, a tradition dating back to the middle ages when wool was England's largest export. http://www.aboutbritain.com/HousesParliament.html, http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/guide/about/gallbigb.html, http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Westminster_Palace.html, http://www.london-pages.demon.nl/london_big_ben.html, http://www.travellondon.com/templates/attractions/gallery_bigben.html,

The early middle ages The Norman Conquest Since William was crowned king, there were many rebellions against the Normans. A small Norman army marched from village to village and destroyed the ones it couldn't control. The Normans took away the Saxon lords' land. Only a few Saxons who supported William could keep their land. Feudalism William gave parts of his conquered land to his captains around the country to avoid rebellions and uprisings. He also kept some land to himself to make sure his was much stronger than his nobles. Of all the farmland half went to his nobles, quarter to church and fifth he kept to himself. William organised the English kingdom according to feudal system. The main purpose of using that system was economic. King gave the land to "vassals" in return of army services and goods. When a noble dies, his son took over the estate. When there was no family, the land went back to king who could give it to another n...

Art-based learning

Art-based learning We can see that art-based learning is not a regular method in school. Although I barely can understand why. It seems to me, that it is rather interesting way of learning. I also would like to point out, that childrens emotional memory is strong and pleasant things will be understood and remembered more. Therefore I would like to discribe the method thoroughly. Only in the past few hundred years has reading been the primary way of teaching religion. For centuries, religious education relied on hearing and seeing. Religious education can benefit by returning to the ages-old methods of hearing and seeing to complement reading. This method enables you to make the old learning way-seeing available for the students nowadays. It is about deepening our understanding of faith. In times past, when people could not read, it was through pictures that they came to realize the glory of God's world and the meaning of the Bible(http:/...

Keskaeg Euroopas

Roman traders entered the area freely, selling products from Italy and Gaul. The Romans built temples, established a number of large farms, and introduced their civilization to the region. About AD 300 the hold by the Romans began to weaken, and no indigenous German tribes pushed into the area from the east. The Frisians, in the north, held their ground, but Saxons occupied the eastern part of the region, and the Franks moved into the west and south. (3) 2.3 The Middle Ages The Franks were the most powerful of the invaders. Their lands extended southward into what is now northern France and eastward across the Rhine. Eventually, the Frankish kings subjugated the Frisians and the Saxons and converted them to Christianity. By 800 the entire territory of the Netherlands was part of the realm of Charlemagne. After Charlemagne died, his empire disintegrated, and in 843 the Treaty of Verdun divided the empire into three parts. The

variety making its way into various regions of the country at a rapid pace. In this respect, the opinions held by the coiner of the term and other linguists are congruent but different from the journalists' ones. Rosewarne (1984) explains that the variety that he chose to call `Estuary English' is not new: "It appears to be a continuation of the long process by which London pronunciation has made itself felt. This started in the later Middle Ages when the speech of the capital started to influence the Court and from there changed the Received Pronunciation of the day." Although with a pinch of criticism, Trudgill (2001) supports this claim: "This is an inaccurate term which, however, has become widely accepted. It is inaccurate because it suggests that we are talking about a new variety, which we are not." It is also affirmed by Wells, who admits that influences from London are now easier to observe:

Romantic poetry and prose

Prometheus and his suffering at the hands of Zeus. It is inspired by Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound and concerns Prometheus' release from captivity. However, unlike Aeschylus' version, there is no reconciliation between Prometheus and Zeus in Shelley's narrative. Instead, Zeus is overthrown, which allows Prometheus to be released. 1821 A Defence of Poetry is an essay, first published posthumously in 1840. It was written in response to his friend Thomas Love Peacock's article The Four Ages of Poetry, where Peacock claimed that poetry though beautiful is utterly useless. Shelley argues that poetry brings about moral good, exercises and expands the imagination, and the imagination is the source of sympathy, compassion, and love, which rest on the ability to project oneself into the position of another person. 1822 The triumph of Life an elegy, unfinished, published in 1824 after Shelley died. William's policies cost English many of their liberties, but brought them peace and order. To understand the idea of kingship and lordship in the early Middle Ages it is important to realise that at this time there was little or no idea of nationalism. William controlled two large areas: Normandy, which he had been given by his father, and England, which he had won in war. Both were personal possessions, and it did not matter to the rulers that the ordinary people of one place were English while those of another were French. To William the important difference between Normandy and England was that as duke of Normandy

1.Common law A common law legal system is a system of law characterized by case law which is law developed by judges through decisions of courts and similar tribunals a common law system is based on legal precedents. The roots of the common law legal systems can be traced back to the first common law system created in England during the Middle Ages. Today, most countries that once had ties to England, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, to name a few, operate under common law. Aside from Great Britain, the majority of the countries in Europe operate under a version of civil law modeled after the Roman legal system created centuries ago In a common law system, the law is created by precedents set after judges decide actual cases.

The Most Important Buildings in Lai Street in Tallinn

The main stairs with a balustrade and a small portrait gallery of the Hueck family (actually copies) enhance the cosy diele. Tallinn City Museum has a model reconstructing the original appearance of the building. With reference to Hueck House, there were a number of spirit and ghost stories and also legends in the Middle Ages. Most of the stories are about the spirit of a monk who was immured in the house and is now restlessly wandering around in the night. Even as late as in 1959 there were still earnest heirs asking "Is the monk still showing himself?" One questioner had heard a story from the people of the house about the beautiful Margaret, daughter of Hueck, who a young monk had had a crush on. However, as Hueck had given his daughter to

Topic - Health

Health 2007 1. Introduction Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of an organism at both the cellular and social level. In the medical field, health is commonly defined as an organism's ability to succesfully respond to challenges and effectively restore and keep a so-called ,,state of balance". 2. History · Early hospitals During the Middle Ages the hospital could serve other functions, such as an almshouse for the poor, or hostel for pilgrims. In ancient cultures, religion and medicine were linked. The earliest known institutions aiming to provide cure were Egyptian temples. Greek temples dedicatedto the healer-god, might admit the sick, who would wait for guidance from the god in a dream. The Romans adopted this worship. The Sri Lankans are perhaps responsible for introducing theconcept ofdedicated hospitals to the world

which are both easily explored on foot. Eastern districts around Pirita and Kadriorg are also worth visiting and the Estonian Open Air Museum (Eesti Vabaõhumuuseum) near Rocca al Mare, west of the city, preserves aspects of Estonian rural culture and architecture. My 5 favourite places in the Old Town are Tall Hermann, the viewing points in Toompea, St. Olaf's Church, Town Hall Square and Bun Passage. For centuries Toompea was always inhabited by the ruling classes. In the Middle Ages, it was the place where the bishops and the nobility resided. Here the landed gentry built their beautiful town houses. Most of the remaining buildings were erected after the big fire on Toompea in 1684. Historically, the fortress on Toompea consisted of two parts: the small fortress (today's Toompea Castle) and the big fortress (the rest of Toompea). The hill, with an area of 8 hectares, was the perfect location for a fort where people could find shelter in case of danger or war

Lausanne, about 30 degrees Celsius. Lausanne is located in the mountainous area of Switzerland and the whole city rests on hills. Walking in Lausanne in that heat was hard, hence the losing my breath part. It is also next to the Geneva Lake which is blue and clear. The most beautiful water body I have ever seen. Lausanne has one of the most amazing churches in the world as it is one of the only ones that still has original figures from the Middle Ages. The church is made of sandstone and therefore it is falling apart. The figurines also have their original colours, which is rare. Lausanne is also the home for the Olympic Museum where there are statues of victorious athletes. I saw quite a few of familiar 2 Kirjapraktika Portfoolio 2013 faces. Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March killed him because they thought he was going to be made king. Nero was a cruel tyrany who would torture his poor subjects by playing the fiddle to them. Then came the Middle Ages. King Alfred conquered the Dames, King Arthur lived in the Age of Shivery, King Harlod mustarded his troops before the Battle of Hastings, Joan of Arc was cannonized by George Bernard Shaw, and the victims of the Black Death grew boobs on their necks. Finally, the Magna Carta provided that no free man should be hanged twice for the same offense. In midevil times most of the people were alliterate. Monopoly paper / DeBeers monopol

Second reason why they still have a near monopoly is strong advertisement. They play on the fact that they are oldest and most famous diamond company, they don't just sell diamonds they sell De Beers diamonds. They call de beers diamonds as the symbol of the love and when other things disappear on this world then diamonds are forever. That is the reason why millions of loved people every year celebrate their love and one important thing there is the diamonds. Also over the ages the DeBeers diamonds are advertised by the famous people like example Marilyn Monroe and Elisabeth Taylor. From 2009 DeBeers output is not been as high as their biggest competitor Arlosa, is this again strategy? On Table 3 we will see that DeBeers output is not as big, but their income is larger than any other diamond company. This is probably due to good advertisement and clever marketing. For most of DeBeers existence they have had a unregulated monopoly situation where they

Inglisekeelne ülevaade Inglismaa kultuurist

The White Cliffs of Dover is one of England’s most famous natural landmarks. The cliffs were formed over 80 million years ago. They are a part of British coastline facing France and the Strait of Dover. The cliffs owe its impressive façade to its composition of chalk accentuated by streaks of black flint and they spread east and west from the town of Dover in the county of Kent. There are miles of hidden tunnels behind the cliff face which were created during the Middle Ages and had an important role in the defence of Britain during the Napoleonic wars. London, the capital of England, has a lot of famous sightseeings itself. One of the greatest is surely Buckingham Palace, which is the official London residence of British monarch, built in 1703 as a large townhouse for Duke of Buckingham. Also, Big Ben, the 150-years-old great bell of the clock at the north-eastern end of Palace of Westminster and is also the largest

Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin did not invent the concept of evolution. A number of prominent scientists and other thinkers during the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century (among them Charles Darwin's grandfather, Erasmus Darwin) had offered detailed theories of evolution (Clark, 1984, pg.24-25). Therefor the idea of evolution went very far back in Western history. At that time this concept was referred to as The Great Chain Of Life and was conceived in the middle ages, based on a mixture of classical and Biblical ideas. The ranking order ranged from the "lowest" forms of life to "higher" living beings (lion), through the various classes of human beings from peasants to nobles to Popes, and upwards through the hierarchy of angles to God. This concept, in and of itself, has nothing to do with evolution, in fact it seems to be anti-evolutionary, since every member is fixed in its own place. This chain was created in a
