Description The eastern border of Livonia was mainly formed already in the first half of the 13th century and the first belt of fortresses here was probably ready by the end of the 13th century. The first fortresses were not built on the border but further inland. The first decades of the 14th century brought no changes in the situation. Early in 1340 the relationship with Russians deteriorated again. Provincial master Burchard von Dreileben planned a campaign against Pskov and demanded the help of Tartu bishopric. The provincial master began to build another belt of border fortresses. On the Annunciation Day, March 25, 1342, the building of fortresses in Marienburg and Vastseliina began. The latter was called the fortress of the Virgin Mary, but it soon acquired the name of New (vastse) Town (Castrum Novum, Neuhausen, Nyhusen, Nowogrodek). The name is probably the result of a chronological comparison with the older Kirumpää fortress

.It was followed by the execution of former archbishop Thomas Cranmer, who was primarily responsible for the printing of the "Great Bible". As a result, around 300 Protestant heretics were burnt in three years. They were mostly poor and self-taught people. This earned the queen the title of "Bloody Mary". 4.SLAID At that time there were many people against Mary and many plans were made to get rid of her. Many wanted to place Elizabeth and Edward Courtenay on the throne. For exaple Northumberland's rebels who were caught. She gave them an easy treatment which was a mistake she later had to regret. One plan against Mary involved Sir Thomas Wyatt the Younger and the Duke of Suffolk Henry Grey who had involvement with the Northumberland plot.

Foursyte Saga - The Man of Property

connotes the heroic and that there is little heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt- edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of old days, as they have come down to us in fairy-tale and legend, the folk of the old Sagas were Forsytes, assuredly, in their possessive instincts, and as little proof against the inroads of beauty and passion as Swithin, Soames, or even Young Jolyon. And if heroic figures, in days that never were, seem to startle out from their surroundings in fashion unbecoming to a Forsyte of the Victorian era, we may be sure that tribal instinct was even then the prime force, and that "family" and the sense of home and property counted as they do to this day, for all the recent efforts to "talk them out."

Public International Law is a system of law

There can be specific cases of PIL, e.g. nations fighting for their independence. These can be considered to be subjects of PIL. Also, some exceptions: International Committee of Red Cross, formerly it wasn't covered by PIL, but due to its unique status (covered by Geneva conventions etc), then it is a subject of PIL. PIL directly regulates private persons, e.g. punishment of international crimes (crimes against peace=crime of aggression, genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes). This is if specific countries do not want to punish the criminals, specific international tribunals etc are created to do the job for them. Humanitarian doctrine if a certain country violates human rights very severely and if other attempts have failed to prevent and stop this, then war can be used as a method to stop this stuff. thefts or bearings of false witness. And there is no punishment if they get away with it. Thirdly, as norms and values may bring out the best in people at times of crisis, they can also disappear, leading to quicker destruction of social order. An example of this would be Leningrad blockade during the Second World War, when many resorted to barbarianism and cannibalism, even though these ideas are strongly against civilized norms. Thus, norms help to contribute to the build-up of societal order, as they are generally beneficial to all individuals. Our values are more personal, but these do are affected by the norms in the societies. However, at times of crisis norms and values can lose their importance, and they can differ from being good (as politeness) or harmful, if established in a deviant group. This is why in author's opinion norms and values van not be considered as the only explanation to

But this highly drug-resistant bacterium has gained attention in recent years for its role in several deaths among otherwise healthy school-age athletes. Are MRSA infections on the rise? What are the real risks of MRSA infection for you or your child? And what can you do to protect against MRSA infection? James Steckelberg, M.D., an infectious disease specialist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., answers these and other common questions about MRSA. What is MRSA, and why is it sometimes referred to as a "superbug"? · MRSA in hospitals. MRSA infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria - often called "staph." Many years ago, a strain of staph emerged in hospitals that was resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. Dubbed

bovine tear secretions. One of the main defence factors in the bovine tear is lysozyme. Studies have shown that lysozyme have ability to reduce the production of biofilms, but do not have the capacity to destroy the preformed biofilms (Ely et al., 2017). In addition to the tear film there are other protection factors such as epithelium, phagocytic cells, local secretory antibody. Cornea and conjunctiva epithelial surface are an effective barrier against bacteria invasion. Due to the regeneration of epithelial cells take place every 5-7 days, therefore microorganism must stick to cells in order to infect them, and this continuous turnover of epithelial cells slows down bacterial adhesion (Postma et al., 2007). In conclusion tear films are likely one of the most essential mechanisms to avoid fixation and colonization by microorganisms in nature (Ely et al., 2017). Etiology

This idea related to the Declaration as the framers wrote of how the king protected his soldiers from punishments of crimes, while the king waged destruction on the people of the thirteen colonies as punishment for their rebellions. Crime & Punishment

Crime & Punishment The fight between good and evil is as old as the humankind itself. Even in society there are always black sheep and these people are called 'criminals'. Although we are part of the EU and tend to be as humane as possible, we have to deal with the problem of growing numbers of people admitted to penitentiaries. One in all we have to dwelve into the mind of a criminal and find out what makes a felon tick. What forces an individual to commit crimes against others? Are we too humane and lenient? When looking for the reasons why people commit crimes I can only say what I believe to be sure of, and it is that individuals go against laws because they choose so, as criminal behaviour is a matter of choice. Today, there are many excuses cloaked as reasons for criminal behaviour. The misguided nature of these assertions has a serious impact upon crime control strategies. The classical approach holds people to choose freely among

Queensberry stormed into Wilde's club, The Albemarle, and finding him absent left a card with the porter, addressed "To Oscar Wilde posing Somdomite". Bosie, who hated his father, persuaded Oscar to sue the Marquess for libel. As homosexuality was itself illegal, Queensberry was able to destroy Oscar's case at the trial by calling as witnesses rent boys who would describe Wilde's sexual encounters in open court. Oscar lost the libel case against Queensberry and was arrested by the crown. With essentially no credible defence against charges of homosexual conduct, he was convicted and sentenced to two years hard labour, the latter part in Reading Gaol. Unreformed Dickensian prison conditions caused a calamitous series of illnesses and brought him to death's door. Constance fled the country with their children and changed the family name, always hoping that Oscar would return to his family and give up Bosie, now also living in exile

George Orwell "Animal Farm" essay - "Human nature exposed in the novel"

They changed them to make their life more enjoyable and comfortable. It's also in humans' nature to tell lies just to inluence other's opinions, to make them look good in someone's eyes or just because telling others something they want to hear or believe grows a certain kind of respect and belief in people. Another technique Napoleon used to increase his power over other animals was telling bizarre and libellous stories of Snowball. This motivated other animals to work harder and as a unit against Snowball. This brainwash is something people tend to do, not only in politics, but also in everyday life. They come up with a specific goal that everyone pursues so they would get people's support, respect and commitment. In addition to get people under someone's control by telling them lies, it is in human nature to use specific attributes for their own benefit. In the book Napoleon took advantage of the fact that he was smarter and more astute than the other animals. He

At the moment it is not allowed to clone people, I think it's unrealistic that in 15 years' time things would really change so much. Organs from dead people can be donated to people who need them to survive. The problem is that it is hard to find a suitable organ. I think that in the future they find a solution how to fit the organs into the patient's body or the doctors are able to make reliable artificial organs and those who cannot be helped today can be helped in

Letter 2008

Dear Mr Roberts I am writing to express my concern about the closing of the art studio and to bring out reasons why the art studio should be left open. Firstly, there are teachers at the studio, who offer tutoring for many fameous artists. Therfore young students can learn from the best. Furthermore, there are lots of necessary facilities. Secondly, the studio is located in an easily accessible area, so students all over the city can attent in the art department. Moreover, young talents can exhibit their creations in the studio. Thirdly, the art department is opend 24/7 so students can attent there after school. In conclusion, it can be clearly seen that the art studio is important for many young artists, therefore we will organise a protest march against closing the studio Yours sincerely, Mari Mets

Telling

The Christmas season in the UK would be nothing without the traditional ,,panto". Comedians, singers and dancers perform in hilariously exaggerated ways. The shows are mostly aimed to children and are based on popular fairy stories and folk legends. Pantomime has become big business in the UK. It can often run for six to eight weeks. Pantomime needs to have a strong story line and has to include all the important elements as the good battling against the evil where the good must come out as a winner. Shows include comic chases and situations which are known as Slapstick comedy. This comedy takes its name from a magical device that makes slapping noise and is used by characters. The most famous of those pantomime clowns was Joseph grimaldi who made his first appearance in 1800. Pantomime now had its first real star.

CLOSING KALARAND FOR PUBLIC

few hundred meters from the Old Town. While being close to the city centre, it still has a remote area atmosphere to it where people could enjoy the seaside and views in a car-free environment. While not officially a public beach, the locals have still put in great effort into keeping it a clean and enjoyable public area (Klementi, 2011). In August 2015 historic Kalarand beach was fenced by Pro Kapital and public was denied access despite laws against such conduct. The action of Pro Kapital, one of the leading real estate developers in Estonia, is reminiscent of Soviet times when citizens where denied access to seaside. In order to solve the situation, both lawfully and justly, the city council should go to court against Pro Kapiatal. Tallinn is known for its picturesque seaside silhouette, surrounded by multitude of beaches, but Kalarand was the only beach within the city and closest place to the seafront next to the Old Town

Kaebuskiri - A letter of complaint

Mayflower 8 All Saints Street London N1 9RL Dear Sir or Madam I would like to complain about a new CD-walkman I bought from your store two weeks ago. The CD-walkman I bought was completely faulty. I am very active person who travels a lot and mostly I like to listen to music while I am walking, but the walkman is played only on a steady surface however, it should be played in every position. In addition to that, it plays only the first three songs and then starts from the beginning. To make matters worse, when I returned to your store to take it back, the shop assistant was neither friendly nor helpful. I am very disappointed. I will not be visiting your store again. As manager you should guard against such appalling treatment of your costumers in future to keep them visiting your store. However, if it is not possible, the shop assistant should be fired. Yours faithfully,

inhabitants were to local lords. Gradually over the next centuries the whole region came to be called the Low Countries, or Netherlands, including present-day Belgium. (3) 7 During the 9th and 10th centuries Scandinavian raiders, called Vikings, frequently invaded the coastal areas, sailing far up the rivers in search of loot. The need for a stronger system of defenses against such marauders gradually led to an increase in the power of the local rulers and their vassals, the nobles, who were largely a warrior class. Concurrently, the towns began to grow in importance, as artisans and merchants settled in them and improved their defenses. The gradual development of powerful towns was a notable feature of Dutch history during the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries, and the area became an important trading centre. Under the leadership

Laboratory work no.1 english

Stir the solution with a glass rod and then filter it. For filtration, fold the filter paper in half twice. Cut one corner for the filter paper to distribute evenly to the wall of the funnel (see Figure Figure 1.1 2.1 figure 1.1). Place the filter paper into the funnel, wet it with distilled water and press it firmly against the wall of the funnel. While filtering, try to leave as much insoluble material in the conical flask as possible. Pour the solution on the filter, letting the solution flow along the glass rod (figure 1.2). The glass rod must be slightly tilted and cannot touch the bottom of the filter as it may break easily. See that the glass rod is in the solution at all times and not on the desk. Place the beaker under the funnel so that the longer edge of the stem is placed against the wall of the beaker

Capital punishment should to be abolished

Capital punishment should to be abolished Capital punishment is a form of punishment where a person's life is taken. This is one of the most controversial topics today. People are either favour or against it. Firstly capital punishment saves money compared to the alternative of life in prison because criminals deserve to die, not stay in jail and live comfortable life. Also when a killer stays in prison he takes up space in already over crowed prisons. Secondly it might prevent the fact that people who have killed someone before, would probably to it again. Because killer`s point of view does not change. Finally it would reassure the people close to the victim it would not happen again
