newly formed county in Bracara Augusta (nowadays Braga), capital city of the ancient Roman province, and also previous capital of several kingdoms over the first millennia. On 24 June 1128, the Battle of São Mamede occurred near Guimarães. Afonso Henriques, Count of Portugal, defeated his mother Countess Teresa and her lover Fernão Peres de Trava, thereby establishing himself as sole leader. Afonso then turned his arms against the persistent problem of the Moors in the south. His campaigns were successful and, on July 25, 1139, he obtained an overwhelming victory in the Battle of Ourique, and straight after was unanimously proclaimed King of Portugal by his soldiers. Afonso then established the first of the Portuguese Cortes at Lamego, where he was crowned by the Archbishop of Braga, though the validity of the Cortes of Lamego has been disputed and called a myth created during the Portuguese Restoration War

Advantages and disadvantages of television

popular. They showed that TV was a unifying force and that our planet in reality is a small world. Previously innovations were promoted on TV. TV shocked, surprised and stimulated. It brought ballet, opera, and theatre to big masses of people. It was even in the vanguard of new drama. Moreover, TV can keep children quiet. If they are noisy their mothers turn on the set. If people do not like TV they do not buy it or switch it off. At the same time there are a lot of arguments against TV. It is said that only three generations have grown up with television, but they managed to forget how to spend their free time without television. Its role is increasing not because it is an entertainer or informant, but because of the grip it has on many people. It is called a "living room monster" or "one-eyed monster." It is established that the biggest viewers are pensioners and housewives. The latter watch TV while their husbands are at work

Edward the Confessor & Westminster Abbey

Godwin was the most important nobleman in England. They had no children as Edward had taken a vow of celibacy. Even this marriage couldn't prevent a breach between Godwin and Edward in 1049. A number on Normans were killed in a scrap in Dover and Kent in 1051. Edward still had influential friends in Normandy and he wanted the people of Dover punhised for this. Edward asked Earl Godwin to be the punisher. After saying no to king he raised an army against Edward instead. The other two senior noblemen, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria, remained loyal to Edward. Later Edward outlawed Godwin and his family in Flanders. Between 1051 and 1052, Edward increased the number of Normans who advised him at court. Edward's continued favouritism caused problems with his nobles. In 1052 Godwin and his sons returned to England with an army. The army was commanded by his two sons Harold and Tostig.

In order to cope with cybercrime, it is necessary to develop and implement protective strategies. In fact, software to combat malicious programs and strategies for risk management are important at all levels. In my opinion, in addition to appropriate protection strategies successful fight against cybercrime requires joint efforts. Mary Shelly "Frankenstein"

The monster hoped the boy was too young to fear deformity, but upon its approach, William cried out, threatening the monster with the weight of his family - the Frankensteins. The creature grabbed the boy by the throat to silence him, and strangled him. It is unclear from the text whether this was an accident on the monster's part or a deliberate murder, but in either case, the monster took this as its first act of vengeance against its creator. It removed a locket from the boy's body and placed it in the folds of the dress of a young woman -- William's nanny, Justine -- who had been sleeping in a barn nearby, assuming she would be accused of the murder. The monster concludes its story with a demand that Frankenstein create for it a female companion like itself. It argues that as a living thing, it has a right to happiness and that Victor, as its creator, has a

of generalizations: it is equivalent to "At least one woman lives there, and at most one woman lives there, and whoever lives there is a biochemist." Russell argues for this analysis both directly and by showing that it affords solutions to each of four vexing logical puzzles: the Problem of Apparent Reference to Nonexistents, the Problem of Negative Existentials, Frege's Puzzle about Identity, and the Problem of Substitutivity. A variety of objections have been raised against Russell's Theory of Descriptions. P. F. Strawson pointed out that it is at odds with our usual linguistic habits: though a sentence having "the present King of France" as its subject presupposes that there is at least one King of France, it is not false for lack of a King; rather, it cannot be used to make a proper statement at all, and so it has no truth-value. And Russell's theory ignores the fact that most descriptions are context-bound, and denote uniquely only within a circum-

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

themselves. By AD 61, the Romans controlled most of present-day England and Wales. They then occupied the southern part of the island for more than 350 years. The Romans failed to conquer Scotland. In the 120s the Emperor Hadrian built a strong wall to defend Roman Britain from raids by the Scots, Picts and other tribes from the North2. Twenty years later Roman forces built a second defensive wall further north but they could not hold it against Scottish raiders and eventually abandoned it. To fight with the raiders and to put down frequent armed rebellions, Rome had to keep an army of about 40,000 men in the province3. Roman Britain The Romans named their new province Britannia. The name was derived from the tribal name of Britons (or Brits) who inhabited most of the occupied territory. The Roman name eventually lost its ending and became shortened to ‘Britain’.

Tallinn-topic

At present Pikk Jalg Street is only for pedestrians. There still exists another gate to Toompea Short Leg. It was laid in the 15th century. The massive wooden gate with ironworks dates from the 17th century. Long Leg was used by vehicles. Until the 20th century there was no way down form the western side of Toompea except for a foot-path. The stairs were built in 1903 and are called Patkul Stairs. The name Patkul itself comes from Johann Patkul. He had worked against the Swede, so Patkul was remembered by Russians. In the Middle Ages that part of Toompea where the castle stands was called the Small Fortress. The rest of the hill with the homes of the feudal lords and bishop of Tallinn was called the Big Fortress. The main building, the centre of the Small Fortress, was the Convention House- a building where the members of the knighthood lived. In the 1920s the reconstruction of the building was carried out. Spanish America The racially-based caste system was in force throughout the Spanish colonies in the Americas, since the 16th century. By the 19th century, this discrimination and the example of the American Revolution and the ideals of the Enlightenment eventually led the Spanish American criollo elite to rise up against the Spanish rule. With the support of the lower classes, they engaged Spain in the Mexican War of Independence (18101821) and the South American Wars of Independence (18101826), which ended with the break-up of former Spanish Empire in America into a number of independent republics. And the fact that they have a personal stake in the outcome makes them really pay attention. Bureaucrats by their nature are the exact opposite sort of people from startup investors. The idea of them making startup investments is comic. It would be like mathematicians runningVogue-- or perhaps more accurately, Vogue editors running a math journal. Though indeed, most things bureaucrats do, they do badly. We just don't notice usually, because they only have to compete against other bureaucrats. But as startup investors they'd have to compete against pros with a great deal more experience and motivation. Even corporations that have in-house VC groups generally forbid them to make their own investment decisions. Most are only allowed to invest in deals where some reputable private VC firm is willing to act as lead investor. Not Buildings If you go to see Silicon Valley, what you'll see are buildings

The Queens of England

Although Philip was never crowned in England, important documents bore his signature and were issued in the name of the "King and Queen". There was opposition to his involvement in English affairs. One expression of this was the serious rebellion under the leadership of Sir Thomas Wyatt (the Younger) to depose Mary and put her half-sister, Elizabeth, later Elizabeth I, on the throne. Philip was an uncompromising Roman Catholic and unpopular in England. At his order, Mary joined in a war against France, with the result that Calais, the last relic of the English conquests won during the Hundred Years' War with France, was lost in 1558. Its loss upset her deeply: "When I am dead and opened, you shall find Calais lying in my heart", she is reported to have said. Mary is characterized as "Bloody Mary" because of the large number of religious persecutions that took place during her reign; almost 300 people were condemned to death as a result of trials for heresy

An analysis of the problem of Political Power - essee

An analysis of the problem of Political Power Written by: Katre Kikkas Introduction It is said that in the political philosophy there are only two questions: ,,Who can have what?" and ,,Who will decide over it?". It is not exactly like that but it is quite close to the trough, to begin with. The first question includes material amenity's, and dividing rights and liberties.(Wolff, 1996) What is power? It is ability to influence others to do something they otherwise would not. Also, others can be affected with threats and force. (Kilp, 2010) Political power includes also right to force the others and to punish them if they disobey. Who should have that kind of power? Actually the political power is quite mysterious by itself. If someone has legitimate political power over me then he or she has a right to force me to do things that they want.(Wolff, 1996) But how can other person have rig...

Puritanism in John Winthrop "A model of Christian Charity"

In his sermon A modell of Christian charity, reliance to the Bible is the key element which reveals in the interpretation of God itself and morals of the Bible. He begins by offering explanation to the inequality of the human kind and why God wants such inequality to exist at all. Simple reciprocity is indicated by collating the rich and the poor as it follows: „soe that the riche and mighty should not eate upp the poore nor the poore and dispised rise upp against and shake off theire yoake” (Winthrop, 1996). These differences give humans the opportunity to manifest the work of the Spirit within them. The poor are recommended be loyal and honest in their worship to their betters and to authorities. The rich and powerful should honestly and loyally share justice and mercy to the poor. Because of that God’s ignition is to have these different types of people come together as one religious community that serves

One of his principal accomplishments before the outbreak of war was the establishment of the Mid-Pacific Strategic Direction-Finder Net and of a similar net for the Atlantic, where it was to play a role of immense importance in the Battle of the Atlantic against the U-boats. Safford's organization enjoyed broad cryptologic functions. It printed new editions of codes and ciphers and distributed them, and contracted with manufacturers for cipher machines. It developed new systems for the Navy. It comprehended such subsections as GI, which wrote reports based on radio intelligence from the field units, and GL, a record-keeping and historical-research group. Gustave Flaubert. American-born and never married, James would live the majority of his life in Europe, becoming a British citizen in 1915 after the outbreak of World War I. Many of his works have inspired other author's works and adaptations to the stage and screen. Jack London Jack London, whose life symbolized the power of will, was the most successful writer in America in the early 20th Century. His vigorous stories of men and animals against the environment, and survival against hardships were drawn mainly from his own experience. An illegitimate child, London passed his childhood in poverty in the Oakland slums. At the age of 17, he ventured to sea on a sealing ship. The turning point of his life was a thirty-day imprisonment that was so degrading it made him decide to turn to education and pursue a career in writing. Summary of philosophy of right (õiguse filosoofia kokkuvõte)

I Locke defines political power as the right to make laws for the protection and regulation of property. In his view, these laws only work because the people accept them and because they are for the public good. Monarchy is not derived from god or a direct decender of leaders described in the Old testament. Sovereign protects people and their property. Sovereginity not analouges to a father's relation to his children husband, wife etc II People have an obligation to punish those who go against God's will and attempt to harm another by compromising his life, liberty, or possessions. In the state of nature man is equal to his fellows Man has the obligation of treating others as he would want to be treated Man has neither right to destroy himself or waste his property (unless in pursuit of a nobler aim) III; IV Locke outlines the differences between the state of nature and the state of war. Aeroobsete ja Anaeroobsete bakterite metabolismi erinevused

For example aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are differentiated on the bases of their need for oxygen in the metabolism. The following report is a brief overview of bacterial metabolism, that is mostly concentrated on the diffrence between anaerobic metabolism ja aerobic metabolism. Because of the complexity of bacterial metabolism the report is mainly about the fundamental diffrences in catabolism (enzymes used and energy and products that are gained) and the defenceses that are used against oxidative stress. To write this report different literary sources, review journals and articels have been used to describe the metabolism in anaerobes and in aerobes. Sissejuhatus Metabolism on kõikide rakus toimuvate protsesside ja reaktsioonide ühine nimetaja. Need protsessid võib jagada kahte rühma vastavalt lõhustumis (katabolism) või sünteesi protsesside (anabolism) hulka. Last few years there have been a lot of discussion about euro in newspapers, TV, radio shows et cetera - so there shouldn't be a citizen of Estonia, who doesn't know anything about it. Many of us think that kroon is one of our national symbols and for that reason they were against the coming of euro. It's like we'd give away our national bird swallow or even our flag - so people were very defensive about it - and it also has a definite meaning as the attribute of independence. People even arranged many different funerals for the kroon in various places of Estonia on the 31 st of December. Edgar Savisaar, the leader of Centre Party (Keskerakond), has brought out one main point in his article - progressive tax is getting closer. Somehow I'm not very
