Beginning in the late 1950s, photovoltaic cells were used to power U.S. space satellites (learn more about the history of photovaltaic cells). The success of PV in space generated commercial applications for this technology. The simplest photovoltaic systems power many of the small calculators and wrist watches used everyday. More complicated systems provide electricity to pump water, power communications equipment, and even provide electricity to our homes. Writing Programs for xComputer It should be clear that entering a long program into xComputer by typing it into the "data" box would be very tedious and error-prone. If you accidentally leave out one instruction, for example, you might have to retype most of the program! Fortunately, the xComputer applet lets you type a complete program in a separate text-input area and then translate the whole program at once and store it in xComputer's memory. This has three advantages: You can edit the program in the window, for example by inserting a new instruction. You can (if the configuration of your Web browser permits it) save the program in a file, so that you'll never have to retype it again. And you can use labels in your program. Labels are a powerful programming technique; they are described in the Postscript to Chapter 3 in the text. They are not covered in this lab, but they will be an important part of the next lab.

The short answer is yes. In 1996, I once went almost ve days without sleep to see (1) if I could make it a week (I couldn't), and (2) what the side e ects would be. Hallucinations cut that little experiment short, but I've continued to play with different patterns of sleep cycles. One of the most fascinating approaches is that of "polyphasic" sleep: breaking sleep up into multiple segments so you can perform well with as little as two hours of sleep per day. The potential advantages of this schedule for new parents--or anyone else forced to embrace insu cient sleep--are tremendous. Beyond that, think of the books you could read, the things you could learn, the adventures you could have with an extra six hours per day. It would open up a new world of possibilities. There are hundreds, if not thousands, who swear by the Thomas Edison approach to minimalist sleep, which bears little resemblance to "sleep" as you know it.
