Mid-term 1 in English Phonetics and Phonology

Acoustic phonetics the study of the physical properties of the sounds themselves. Auditory phonetics the study of the way listeners perceive these sounds. Articulatory phonetics the study of how the vocal tract produces the sounds of language. Phonology maybe used by actors, teachers, computer engineers etc. Phonology the description of the systems and patterns of speech sounds in a language. It studies: the abstract or mental aspect of the sounds in a language the actual physical articulation of speech sounds The phoneme. Phoneme is a meaning distinguishing sound in a language; it functions contrastively/ the smallest contrastive unit in the sound system of a language. When there is a contrast in identical environment we must be dealing with separate phonemes - when we replace one sound with another, we get another word with another meaning, therefore that sound must be a phoneme. There are small shades of sounds that don't distinguish meaning phones. The

''How much does life weigh?''

inconsequential to me. The first thought, that came into my mind, was whether this is all we are actually worth. It depends on a person, I believe that life is worth as much as you make it worth. Some may hold into these 21 grams one truly valuable life with everything in it. Others may hold a life, that has just passed by. These are the people who have done nothing but just existing for their whole lives. Something needs to be done in order to be content with your life. Before actual dying, people start to think their whole life through. This is the time, when we forget the little things that once seemed awfully important, and start to think a little further. A question ''Did my life weigh enough?'' could be asked. It sure does not mean the measurements. It can be compared with an everyday life, where worth things cost more. Still, the most important things do not cost a penny. Therefore the weight of our souls - 21 grams - an unbelievably small

Shakespeare in love

the inspiration and love story started to build up. Even though William at first didn't even know that Kent was actually a woman and believed he was nephew of his true love. But found out later accidentally. But their love was forbidden as Viola was about to marry Lord Wessex on his fathers demand. Shakespeare and Viola kept meeting each other secretly followed by many events until the day of Shakespeares performance where the love story got happy ending. The movie has an actual problem that is known for nowadays society as well in Indian regions for example when parents decide who their offsprings marry to simply because they find it suiting or useful(for example when daughter marries to richer man ) Just like in the movie when Viola de Lesseps was supposed to marry Lord Wessex because his father had already arranged her betrothal, even though she was searching for true love and her heart belonged to William Shakespeare.

The Father of Flag Day

of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating. These observances were held in the five parks again the next year, also on the third Saturday of June. In the years that followed, 36 Governors, scores of mayors and five Presidents of the United States sent delegates and credentials agreeing that Flag Day should be observed in all states of the Union on the actual June 14 anniversary of the adoption of the flag .By 1916 flag ceremonies on June 14 had become so prevalent that President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing Flag Day as an annual national event. Cigrand died of a sudden heart attack on 16 May 1932 President Harry S. Truman signed the legislation in 1949 and June 14th was properly designated Flag Day. This is where Flag Day stands today, 50 years after Truman as we enter the twenty-first century.

Tolerance.

Tolerance Ladies and gentlemen, before I move to my actual topic, think with me for a second on this scenario... A black exchange student from Kenya comes to our school and you see him getting beaten up by a bunch of bullies without no apparent reason, what would you do? More then a few of us pretend as if they had not seen anything. I myself would feel awful, but I wouldn't know what to do either. Although I would condone myself with the idea, that life is difficult and it's just something you have to deal with.

capital. 3. What is Remembrance Day all about and why is it celebrated at that time? It is about the men (and women) who lost their lives fighting in the World Wars. It's celebrated then, because that's the day WWI was ended with a treaty. 4. Which powers does the Queen of the UK have? The Queen has to sign all the bills for them to pass. She is the one who opens the Parliament every fall for the next session. She is however more of a representative than an actual decision maker these days. 5. What is the British Parliament made up of? What are their roles? It's made of 3 parts: the monarch, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The House of Lords can ask the House of Commons to rewrite parts of the bill. The bill needs the Queen's signature to pass. The House of Commons writes the bills. 6. What do you know about the Wars of the Roses? It was a war between two families, one had a red rose as their symbol and the other

expenses, and payments economically equivalent to interest, to a percentage of entity’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA). The net interest expense/EBITDA ratio should be fixed in a corridor of 10-30%. This approach aims at two objectives – uses net interest expense to calculate the amount of tax deductible (to maintain freedom for a corporate to decide where in the group it is most effective to borrow), and by using EBITDA assures that the group has actual business earnings in that particular entity/country. This fixed ratio rule is advised to be supplemented with the group ratio rule to allow a more flexible approach to groups having high debt in a particular entity/country for non-tax reasons but low interest expenses in other group entities; and additional targeted/specific rules as necessary to manage volatility of interest expenses, achieve additional tax policy objectives or lower other risks. The fixed ratio rule, as

Whichever is the device (Martindale or Pilling Box), the final result consists of abraded fabrics to be assessed in terms of pilling. This is performed by skilled operators (experts) comparing the specimens, after a predefined number of cycles performed by the testing equipment, with visual standards (which may be actual fabrics samples or photographs). On the basis this comparison, the experts define the resistance to pilling using the so called “degree of pilling” [1] i.e. an index varying on a scale ranging from 5 -which means no pilling- to 1 -which means very severe pilling (see Table 1). 6 TABLE 1. degree of pilling.

Review "THE CATCHER IN THE RYE"

Book is read. I'm very pleased to report that I joined the group of people who have already read "The catcher in the rye". Many people have mentioned this story in some conversations and lots of quotes in Internet contain "J.D.Salinder" in the end of it, therefore I was really excited when we decided to read this book as a part of our English lesson course. It was very good way for English skills practice and also self- liberalizing. I think many teenagers would be able to relate the book to the actual themes - it's a modern classic of today. Every teeneager has had once felt himself sort of depressed and upset. It is absolutely normal state for identity formation. We mature, we become adults, we revise our values and are feeling really unusual sometimes. Lots of times I have caught myself thinking that I'd already felt something like this before... Lots of moments in this book were really similar to some periods of my life and many relatives seemed very similar to characters of this book.

to baying their bills. Soon they will lose their homes. They will be living in the streets and eating from the garbage can. Weakest persons will end their lives in very sad way, because they do not know how to manage their lives. The economic crisis are because people lend themselves through. They live over their capability just because they want to be better than the other, or be as good as the others. And this is caused by advertisment too. The Freedom of speech is very actual theme in nowadays. Very many humans have suffered because everybody have right to say what they are thinking and express their feelings. In the 21st century, humans are very easy to affect, and because of that we should curtail the Freedom of speech. When we not do that, it could end in very bad way. When humans have too much freedom, they go crazy. The more you give, the more they want. All the wars are causedbecause of the greediness and the Freedom of speech. This will all end when people

Presentation about Casey Brown´s Ted talk

Brown´s Ted talk. Her speech is named ,,Know your worth, and then ask for it." My presentation will take about five minutes. You can ask questions at the end of my presentation. 2. slaid (video) 3. slaid - introduction My presentation is about pricing consultant's Casey Brown's speech about knowing the value of yourself as an employee or as a company and making others see what you are worth. This speech seemed interesting to me, because the gender wage gap what she is aiming to is also actual in Estonia. The gender wage gap is a subject that affects somehow all of us. Gender wage gap figure has publicly launched a couple discussions on fair treatment of women and men, and gender balance issues. Casey Brown has some really good tips that we could use to help us. 4. slaid fear and doubts The main point of Casey's speech is that: No one will ever pay you what you're worth. They'll only ever pay you what they think you're worth, and you control their thinking.

What is the best age to be?

When you grow up, the problems change, but the way you see the life changes too. Adults on the other hand, who are over the age of 18, legally can do what their parents can do, no more curfew no more allowance, but you have to earn your own money and work to get yourself to a point in life where you are in control of yourself, this including cleaning or leaving your room as it is. 20- 30 there is going to be a new experience- university and you will find a new actual job and meet your princess/ prince and travel the world. When you become 30 then you have got married and had kids, you will probably work day and night to make as much money as possible, and you are living a family life. In next ten years after 40 you teach your children how to be man and woman, get them a new car, ask them about your dates and live your life at maximum speed. When you become 60 you are going to see your children to marry and you can feel proud of them. You have

Life in Estonia through the eyes of an economics student

the country´s workforce is employed in transportation. The thing I am the most proud of is the information technology and telecommunication field. I could not imagine my life without such a good internet connection as it is in Estonia; it is one thing I use absolutely every day. I read e-mail, newspapers; use bank services and so on. I find it being impossible to not mention the voting opportunity through the internet in fact 140 00 voters (24, 3% of actual voters) used online voting when the election of 2011 took place. This is impressive. For an entrepreneur it is also a very best place to start, we have skilled and hardworking workforce, Estonia actually encourage entrepreneurship skills and it only takes 20 minutes to get your company registered legally. Our IT-friendly atmosphere is also an advantage. Being a student of economics has affected me by inverting my overlook on money and developed my economical thoughts about life

Landmarcs

The Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the heart of the London borough of the City of Westminster, close to the historic Westminster Abbey and the government buildings of Whitehall and Downing Street. The name may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a mediaeval building complex most of which was destroyed in 1834, and its replacement New Palace that stands today; it has retained the style and status of a royal residence, despite its actual use. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and is often extended to refer to the clock or the clock tower as well. Big Ben is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in May 2009 (the clock itself first ticking on 31 May 1859), during which celebratory events took place.

The monument, made of marble, granite, and sandstone, is both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk, [n 1] standing 555 feet 5 inches (169.294 m) in height. It is also the tallest structure in Washington D.C. It was designed by Robert Mills, an architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after the architect's death. This hiatus in construction happened because of co-option by the Know-Nothing party, a lack of funds, and the intervention of the American Civil War. A difference in shading of the marble, visible approximately 150 feet (46 m, or 27%) up, shows where construction was halted for a number of years. Its cornerstone was laid on July

the output. You know that an ideal sensor should produce an output voltage X for temperature T, but the real sensor produces an output voltage Y for temperature T. By measuring the output at several temperatures, you can build up a table of information that relates the output of that specific sensor to temperature. This information can be stored in memory. When the micro- processor reads the sensor, it looks in the memory (or does a calculation) to determine the actual temperature. You would want to look at storing this calibration with the sensor if it is not physically located with the microprocessor. This way, the sensor can be changed without recalibrating. Figure 1.1 shows three means of handling this calibration. In diagram A, a microprocessor connects to a remote sensor via a cable. The microprocessor stores the calibration information in its EEPROM or flash memory. The tradeoffs for this method are:

Thus, in contrast to a high specificity test, negative results in a high sensitivity test are used to rule out the disease. Sensitivity alone does not tell us how well the test predicts other classes (that is, about the negative cases). In the binary classification, as illustrated above, this is the corresponding specificity test. Sensitivity is not the same as the positive predictive value (ratio of true positives to

This problably influenced her works too. § She returned to England with her mother and studied economics and psychology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. § Her actual christened name was "Franklin Birkinshaw". which she feels contributed to her being accepted at St Andrews and permitted to study economics: the school assumed she was a male student applicant. Early life § In her early twenties she was briefly married to a man more than twenty years older than her. It is not clear whether she had her first son during this marriage or earlier.

Decriminalizing Cannabis in Estonia

occurred death by overdosing cannabis. People do feel sick after abusing marijuana, but the effect is never like overdosing on alcohol or on other narcotic substances. According to Robert Gable “the least physiologically toxic substances, those requiring 100 to 1,000 times the effective dose to cause death, include psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana, when ingested. Gable has found no published cases in the English language that document deaths from smoked marijuana, so the actual lethal dose is a mystery. Gable’s surmise is that smoking marijuana is more risky than eating it but still safer than getting drunk by alcohol (Gable, American Scientist 2006, 94). Third reason why Estonia should decriminalize cannabis is that our doctors are afraid to write out descriptions for patients for the use of medical marijuana. By the law they are allowed to do so, but no doctor in Estonia has had the courage to write out the description for it. That

Victorian life - Briti ajalugu

15. Victorian times Life and conditions of Victorian people Children were expected to help towards the family budget. They often worked long hours in dangerous jobs and in difficult situations for a very little wage. For example, there were the climbing boys employed by the chimney sweeps; boys and girls working down the coal mines, crawling through tunnels too narrow and low to take an adult. Some children worked as errand boys, crossing sweepers, shoe blacks, and they sold matches, flowers and other cheap goods. During the Victorian era, the population grew immensely. At the end of 19th century the population had grown three times bigger in Great Britain! That made wages much lower, because more people were looking for jobs. Many people couldn't afford places to live and had to live on the streets. Slums started appearing in bigger towns. Crime rate was also rising because of this: many homeless child...

Abstraktsionism

olema võrdne muusikaga, mille helid ju ka midagi ei kujuta.. Regrettably, the first three compositions were destroyed during World War II. They are represented in the exhibition by full-scale, black-and-white photographic reproductions. One of the strengths of the exhibition is the assembly of preliminary studies for most of the works. These were done in oil, watercolor, ink and pencil. These help convey a sense of the three lost compositions, but cannot hope to replace the actual canvasses. The viewer is left with a profound feeling of loss for the destroyed works. Esimest põhisuunda nn. konstruktiivset e. geomeetrilist abstraktsionismi esindas KAZIMIR MALEVITS(1878-1935). -Malevits hakkas Moskvas esimesena maalidel üksnes ristkülikuid ja ruute kujutama -1915. valmis tal teos ,,Must ruut valgel pinnal" -"Valge ruut valgel pinnal" 1918. aastal maalis Kazimir Malevits valge ruudu valgele lõuendile, mis tema tõlgenduses tähendas ei miski ei miskis.

The future came up as the most serious topic. I'm not surprised that never before have I thought about how will I get my own home, how will I pay the rent or a loan and the taxes, how will I provide a happy, carefree childhood and a great home for my children etc. All of that is hard. And that's not even what scares me, because everyone has to do that, and everyone does that, handles it in some way. What really scares me is the actual hard part of life. Think about the adults around you, who you really know. Your family members, relatives, acquaintances. Me and my friend - we got to thinking about our parents', relatives' and their friends' lives and how they have handled it and we got to a conclusion that something really bad has happened to each and every one of them without any exceptions. Some examples: losing a child, losing a husband or a wife, losing an unborn baby, having one parent leave

Sheep senses and social cognition

However, reasonable evidence for many of these behaviours has only been provided in higher primates and even in these cases experiment are often open to re-interpretation due to limitations in the paradigms used. Recent advantages in functional brain Imaging techniques using magnetic resonance Imaging and positron emissioon tomography have allowed studies to be conducted in humans aimed at understanding which brain regions are functionally active during actual perception of objects. The implications of research are that if we can show that the sheep brain processes complex sensory information from objects in the same way that the human brain does then it should have at least some capacity to form mentaal images of them in their absence and hence potentially be consciously aware.

Ely Whitney

the idea of interchangeability. Whitney's defenders have claimed that he invented the American system of manufacturing -- the combination of power machinery, interchangeable parts, and division of labor that would underlie the nation's subsequent industrial revolution. While there is persuasive evidence that he failed to achieve interchangeability, his use of power machinery and specialized division of labor are well documented. Whitney was able to calculate an actual price per musket by including fixed costs such as insurance and machinery, which the government had not included. He thus made early contributions to both the concept of cost accounting, and the concept of the efficiency of private industry.

Conditions of the productive animals in farms.

The inescapable fact is that the conditions in big farms, especially in factory farms, are unacceptably bad. Recent proof of that was the Põima farm case in Estonia were 260 cows are starving. Animals are wet because of their own excrements, some spots on their body are furless, their bones poke out from their skin and they can hardly stand up. What is more, they do not have food or litter, so they lie on cold cemented floor that is covered with dung. This problem is not actual only in Estonia. Also the reality of Finnish factory farming was recently revealed. Producers arguments as there are severe problems related to intensive farming abroad and animals in Finland are treated properly, were more than doubt filling. That is why there was conducted an inquiry to investigate the real conditions in Finnish farms. During the investigation 21 Finnish broiler farms, 60 pig factories and 20 egg were visited during a year-long period between 2006 and 2007

seaduse vastu. Nad kasutasid hashtag`i #Repealthe19th, et rääkida, miks naistel ei tohiks olla hääleõigust. Mõned naljaga ja mõned väga tõsiselt. Panin siia slaidi peale pildi, mida Ameerikas väga tuntud konservatiivne tsiviilõiguste advokaat Kaitlin Bennett Twitteris kirjutas: “Honestly, letting women vote in this country wasn't one of the best ideas. Females vote with emotion and overwhelmingly support Democratic feel-good policies that take away our ACTUAL rights. I'd rather lose my "right" to vote than lose my right to defend myself with a firearm!” (tõlkes: “Lasta naistel siin riigis hääletada, ei olnud üks parimaid ideid. Ma pigem kaotaksin oma "hääletamisõiguse", kui kaotaksin õiguse ennast tulirelvaga kaitsta!”)

Keelefilosoofia raamat

what the sentence's component words refer to. It is a natural and appealing view. Indeed it may seem obviously correct, at least so far as it goes. And one would have a hard time denying that reference or naming is our cleanest-cut and most familiar relation between a word and the world. Yet, when exam- ined, the Referential Theory very soon runs into serious objections. Objection 1 Not every word does name or denote any actual object. First, there are the names of nonexistent items like Pegasus or the Easter Bunny. "Pegasus" does not denote anything, because there is in reality no winged horse for it to denote. (We shall discuss such names at some length in chapter 3.) Or consider pronouns of quantification, as in: (5) I saw nobody. 4 Philosophy of Language It would be a tired joke to take "nobody" as a name and respond, "You must have very good eyesight, then." (Lewis Carroll: "Who did you pass on the road
