for our actions (lack autonomy) - just following orders or just doing our job. One guard at his trial in Nuremberg famously quoted he was not to blame as he was doing as he was told therefore he should not be held accountable. The role of buffers: If you were asked to press the button to release weapons of mass destruction onto another country .. this would be easier … as you would not have to see the consequences of your actions.. the distance acts as a buffer. Asking you to pull the trigger of a gun may cause you more issues. Kriitika Milgram was fiercely criticised. His results upset people - this may have been because they felt uncomfortable with what it showed about ordinary Americans. Maybe if they had not been so shocking (excuse the pun!) people would not have given Milgram’s work a second thought, perhaps the unpalatable findings made people seek to discredit the procedures.

TARTUFFE (inglise keelne)

And how she seems possessed with her Tartuffe! DORINE Her case is nothing, though, beside her son's! To see him, you would say he's ten times worse! His conduct in our late unpleasantness [1] Had won him much esteem, and proved his courage In service of his king; but now he's like A man besotted, since he's been so taken With this Tartuffe. He calls him brother, loves him A hundred times as much as mother, son, Daughter, and wife. He tells him all his secrets And lets him guide his acts, and rule his conscience. He fondles and embraces him; a sweetheart Could not, I think, be loved more tenderly; At table he must have the seat of honour, While with delight our master sees him eat As much as six men could; we must give up The choicest tidbits to him; if he belches, ('tis a servant speaking) [2] Master exclaims: "God bless you!"--Oh, he dotes Upon him! he's his universe, his hero; He's lost in constant admiration, quotes him On all occasions, takes his trifling acts

Charles Dickens Charles John Huffam Dickens was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsmouth in Hampshire, the second of eight children to John Dickens n 7 February 1812. The 12-year-old Dickens began working ten hour days in a Warren's boot-blacking factory. In May 1827, Dickens began work in the office of Ellis and Blackmore as a law clerk. state, but there was considerable conflict between the crown and the Covenanters over the form of church government. After the Glorious Revolution, the abolition of episcopacy and the overthrow of the Roman Catholic James VII by William and Mary, Scotland briefly threatened to select a different Protestant monarch from England. On 22 July 1706 the Treaty of Union was agreed between representatives of the Scots Parliament and the Parliament of England and the following year twin Acts of Union were passed by both parliaments to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain with effect from 1 May 1707. The deposed Jacobite Stuart claimants had remained popular in the Highlands and north-east, particularly amongst non- Presbyterians. However, two major Jacobite risings launched in 1715 and 1745 failed to remove the House of Hanover from the British throne. The threat of the Jacobite movement to the United Kingdom and its monarchs effectively ended

He was deeply in love with Mrs Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, whom he could not marry because Britain's sovereign was the titular Head of the Church of England, which did not sanction remarriage of divorced persons. Finally Edward chose love over duty and his brother Albert was declared King George VI. One of his first acts was to name Edward the Duke of Windsor. George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth were very popular, especially during World War II, when they continued to live in London (while it was being bombed) and accepted the same food restrictions as ordinary people. George VI brought the Crown and people closer together. World War II (1939-1945) involved almost every major in the world. The war was

Sissejuhatus inglise õiguskeelde

Estonian law is no exception. Today, even precedent serves as a source of law. The Supreme Court has the authority to interpret legal rules and its opinions are taken into account when dealing with similar situations in the future. Additionally, generally recognized principles of international law and binding international treaties form an inseparable part of Estonian law. That is also stated in the Constitution. Constitution is the most powerful and important act. All other acts have to be in accordance with the constitution. The current Estonian Constitution was adopted by a referendum held on 28 June 1992. The Constitution stipulates that Estonia is a sovereign democratic republic where the supreme power of the state is vested in the people. In conclusion, this was a short overview of the Estonian legal system. Estonian legal system belongs to the continental European legal tradition, as do for example Germany and France.

Great Britain

All of the island is territory of the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and most of the United Kingdom's territory is in Great Britain. Most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island of Great Britain, as are their respective capital cities: London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the political union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland with the Acts of Union 1707 on 1 May 1707 under Queen Anne. In 1801, under a new Act of Union, this kingdom merged with the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After the Irish War of Independence most of Ireland seceded from the Union, which then became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The relatively limited variety of fauna and flora on the island is due to its size and the fact that

Üldökoloogia kordamisküsimuste vastused

In contrast, homeotherms regulate their internal body temperature by expending metabolic energy. [2][86] [157] There is a relationship between light, primary production, and ecological energy budgets. Sunlight is the primary input of energy into the planet's ecosystems. Light is composed of electromagnetic energyof different wavelengths. Radiant energy from the sun generates heat, provides photons of light measured as active energy in the chemical reactions of life, and also acts as a catalyst for genetic mutation.[2][86][157] Plants, algae, and some bacteria absorb light and assimilate the energy throughphotosynthesis. Organisms capable of assimilating energy by photosynthesis or through inorganic fixation of H2S are autotrophs. Autotrophs--responsible for primary production--assimilate light energy that becomes metabolically stored as potential energy in the form of biochemical enthalpicbonds.[2][86][157] 47

oil up from the tanks. The transfer pump which can, for example, be a gear pump or a screw pump, sucks fuel oil through a coarse filter and feeds it to one of two settling tanks. The fuel oil is heated in the settling tanks up to 80 - 90º C to allow some water and sludge to settle out by gravity and be drained off. The fuel is then passed through the purification system and discharged to a service tank. Two centrifuges are required to be used in a large engine. The first acts as a purifier to remove water, soluble, sludge etc while the second acts as a clarifier to remove solids. From the service tank the oil flows to one of the electrically driven booster pumps. From there it is fed through the preheater, and the fine filter to the engine fuel pumps. LUBRICATING SYSTEM When two solids are in contact and move in relation to each other, there arises a resistance to this movement known as friction, i.e. a force is created which attempts to prevent such movement

back. In 1976, the Australian government agreed that aboriginal people have rights to their tribal territories, and some land was given back. On 3 June, 1992, the High Court of Australia said that the idea of "Terra nullius" was wrong, and the government brought in new laws, to set up Native Title. If aborigines can prove they have always used particular land, it has not been sold, or changed by government acts, then the land could be claimed as aboriginal land. Religion The Aboriginal religion is based heavily on the Dreaming. The Dreaming is the Aboriginal creation story. Aborigines believe that at the beginning of time the world was a shapeless mass of nothing, waiting to be transformed into what we see today. American Literature Portfolio

He is extensively quoted. During his lifetime, Twain became a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists and European royalty. Twain enjoyed immense public popularity. His keen wit and incisive satire earned him praise from both critics and peers. American author William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature." Twain began his career writing light, humorous verse but evolved into a grim, almost profane chronicler of the vanities, hypocrisies and murderous acts of mankind. At mid-career, with Huckleberry Finn, he combined rich humor, sturdy narrative and social criticism. Twain was a master at rendering colloquial speech and helped to create and popularize a distinctive American literature built on American themes and language. Many of Twain's works have been suppressed at times for various reasons. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been repeatedly restricted in American high schools, not least for its frequent use of the word

Challenges of childrens participation A Case Study of active citizenship in Cadle Primary School

The turn-taking for example necessitates patience and self-control, and `by thinking critically and carefully about your own beliefs and attitudes, children are likely to develop insights to their own character` (Law, 2006, p.35). Law strongly believes learning about philosophy acts as an effective tool in aiding emotional development in children. Therefore, he suggests that the most efficacious way of developing these skills in children is to acknowledge their social agency and respect their equal worth with adults and proficiency to understand the complexity of thought. Law concludes that the number of studies have demonstrated that leaning about philosophical thought is good for children `academically, socially and emotionally` and equips children

that she resists. But Cohn's attempts to win Brett are so clumsy and foolish that they provide an easy target for mockery. Cohn adheres to an outdated, prewar value system of honor and romance. He fights only within the confines of the gym until his rage and frustration make him lash out at Romero and Jake. He plays hard at tennis, but if he loses he accepts defeat gracefully. Furthermore, he cannot believe that his affair with Brett has no emotional value. Hence, he acts as a foil for Jake and the other veterans in the novel; unlike them, he holds onto traditional values and beliefs, likely because he never experienced World War I firsthand. Sadly, Cohn's value system has no place in the postwar world, and Cohn cannot sustain it. His tearful request that Romero shake his hand after Cohn has beaten him up is an absurd attempt to restore the validity of an antiquated code of conduct. His flight from Pamplona is symbolic of the failure of traditional

The Witch Trials in Salem

Her career began with sexual intercourse with the devil. Each witch was confirmed at a general meeting (the witches' Sabbath) at witch the devil presided, often in the form of a goat, and had intercourse with the neophytes. In return for her powers, the witch pomised to serve him faithfully. (in the imagination of the Church even evil could be thought of as ultimately male-directed!) As the Malleus makes clear, the devil almost always acts through the female, just as he did in Eden. Not only were the witches women they were women who seemed to be organized into an enormous secret society. A witch who was a proved member of the ,,Devil's party" was more dreadful than one who had acted alone. In fact, there is evidence that women accused of being witches did meet locally in small groups and that these groups came together in crowds of hundreds or thousands on festival days. Some

Investors Handbook. A Legal Guide to Business in Georgia

In this brochure we offer information about the legal framework which is highly important in the process of starting up and running a business in Georgia. The brochure consists of three parts Start up a Business, Privatization and the Labor legislation. Each part consists of chapters outlining in most comprehensible language the content of the leg- islative base regulating the corresponding field. Furthermore, relevant legislative acts and articles are provided at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately, the format of the brochure does not enable full incorporation of every relevant detail and information and can thus not serve as a substitute for professional legal advice. Nev- ertheless, we did our best to make the brochure comprehensive and catch main aspects and rules of Georgian legal framework which will hopefully be of use for the interested reader. 4

cities where they are needed. The use of renewable sources is also limited by the fact that they are not always available (for example, cloudy days reduce solar energy, calm days mean no wind blows to drive wind turbines, droughts reduce water availability to produce hydroelectricity). The production and use of renewable fuels has grown more quickly in recent years due to higher prices for oil and natural gas, and a number of State and Federal Government incentives, including the Energy Policy Acts of 2002 and 2005. The use of renewable fuels is expected to continue to grow over the next 30 years, although we will still rely on non-renewable fuels to meet most of our energy needs. trends Consumption Total renewable energy consumption increased by 478 trillion Btu or 7 percent between 2005 and 2006 to 6,922 trillion Btu . At the same time total US energy consumption decreased 1 percent largely due to decreases across the board in fossil fuel energy consumption. The combination of these

The African-American Civil Rights Movement were social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. The phase of the movement was between 1955 and 1968, particularly in the South. The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (195556) in Alabama; "sit-ins" such as the influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches a wide range of other nonviolent activities. Bridges presentation

first American settlement, from classical Rome to the European Enlightenment, including China, Japan, and south-east Asia. Wooden bridges have played a major role in the history of human development. The architectural varieties and structural types - girder, arch, suspension, truss, pontoon, and covered - were numerous. By virtue of the nature of their material, extant examples are scarce, as is the historic record. Nature, acts of God, war, and arson have decimated wooden bridges throughout time. A special global effort should be initiated to identify, access, and protect wooden structures of all kinds. A group of experts should be convened in the USA and in other parts of the world where timber bridges survive to recommend a selection for nomination to the World Heritage List. Theoretical advances during the Renaissance and Neo-Classical period

Islam

Most Sufi orders, or tariqas, can be classified as either Sunni or Shi'a. Others The Kharijites are a sect that dates back to the early days of Islam. The only surviving branch of the Kharijites is Ibadism. Unlike most Kharijite groups, Ibadism does not regard sinful Muslims as unbelievers. The Imamate is an important topic in Ibadi legal literature, which stipulates that the leader should be chosen solely on the basis of his knowledge and piety, and is to be deposed if he acts unjustly. Most Ibadi Muslims live in Oman. The Alevi, Yazidi, Druze, Ahmadiyya, Bábí, Bahá'í, Berghouata and HaMim movements either emerged out of Islam or came to share certain beliefs with Islam. Some consider themselves separate while others still sects of Islam though controversial in certain beliefs with mainstream Muslims. Sikhism, founded by Guru Nanak in late fifteenth century Punjab, incorporates aspects of both Islam and Hinduism.

Sissejuhatus semiootikasse

Semiootika Mihhail Lotman 06.09.2007 Semiootika on teadus märkidest. Semiootika tegeleb märkidega. Märkide tõlgendamine oleneb inimestest, kontekstist. Kreekas herma (fallosekujuline märk) oli viljakuse sümbol. Carlo Ginzburg: ,,Juust ja vaglad" ,,Clues, Myths and the Historical Moment" Kratilos (Cratylos) esimene semiootiline traktaat 5. saj. eKr Claudius Galenus Oli arst (129-200), avaldas mõtte, et haigus ise ennast ei avalda, vaid ta avaldab märke. Kratilos loomuse järgi Hermogenes kokkuleppe järgi Platon kirjeldab mõnda semiootilist dialoogi. Sokratese metodolooga sokraatiline dialoog. Märkide ja esemete seos, mida nad tähistavad, on loomulik. Semiootika on ühelt pool vana teadus, teisalt aga kujunes välja alles 20. sajandil. Semiootika sisu on kahekülgne: - ratsionaalne teadus (Platon, Percy), loogika Teadusteta mütodoloo...

Semiootika eksamimaterjalid, Mihhail Lotman
