Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie

Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie is a British Indian novelist and essayist. He is born on 19. June 1947. He is the only son of Anis Ahmed Rushdie and Negin Bhatt, a teacher. Rushdie was born in Bombay, India, into a Muslim family of Kashmiri descent.[10][11][12] He was educated at Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, Rugby School, and King's College, University of Cambridge, where he studied history. Rushdie's first career was as a copywriter, working for the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather. It was while he was at Ogilvy that he wrote Midnight's Children, before becoming a full-time writer. His first novel, Grimus, a part-science fiction tale, was generally ignored by the public and literary critics. His next novel, Midnight's Children, catapulted him to literary notability. It is regarded by many as one of the great books of the last 100 years. This work won the 1981 Booker Prize and, in 1993 and 2008, was awarded the Best of the Boo...

Reading task

Comprised of five main volumes and three supplemental companion books, Rick Riordan's popular young people's series should be an easy sell for any studio. It has loads of heroes and villains, monsters and sprites, wish fulfillment and epic feats of magic and courage. It taps into every high schooler's literary reference points while presenting the uninitiated with a wonderful set of seminal characters to champion. So why then does Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, come across as slapdash? Why does it feel rushed and strung together? We barely settle in to the story before our demi-god in training is attacked on a field trip, whisked off to Camp Half Blood, and is doing his best Theseus impression (look it up). Toss in some more CG beasties, a way too short cameo by Ms. Thurman as everyone's favorite serpent-headed gorgon, a gratuitous music montage to Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and you've got a film that is desperate to balance the needs of folklore with the

Katherine Mansfield

The Garden Party Katherine Mansfield Character Analysis: Laura The character that won my favor is Laura, the protagonist of the story, who comes across as a fragile and insecure young woman. All at once she starts to perceive her role in this complex world. Moreover, she begins to wonder over the values and delusions, which are of great importance in life. Throughout the story it stands to reason that she is trying to establish her true self, even though she is steadily influenced by her family, especially by her mother. On account of her constant questionings she finally evolves into an individual, who is capable of

The Kingdom of Scotland was an independent state until 1 May 1707 when it joined in a political union with the Kingdom of England to create a united Kingdom of Great Britain. This union was the result of the Treaty of Union agreed in 1706 and put into effect by the Acts of Union that were passed by the Parliaments of both countries despite widespread protest across Scotland. Scotland's legal system continues to be separate from those of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland and Scotland still constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in public and in private law. The continued independence of Scots law, the Scottish education system, and the Church of Scotland have all contributed to the continuation of Scottish culture and Scottish national identity since the Union

Maples Cottage is a historic cottage in Westborough, Massachusetts. "Northwest Passage" is one of the best-known songs by Canadian musician Stan Rogers. An a cappella song. While it recalls the history of early explorers who were trying to discover a route across Canada to the Pacific Ocean , its central theme is a comparison between the journeys of these past explorers and the singer's own journey to and through the same region. O Canada is the national anthem of Canada. The song was originally commissioned by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. Bella notices that Edward is measuring her reactions, clearly hoping to find her afraid or disgusted by what she sees. But instead of being afraid, Bella reaches out and runs her fingers through Jacob's fur. She is surprised by how it is both rough and soft. Suddenly Jacob licks her across her entire face, laughing and jumping out of the way when she yells and smacks at him playfully in response. Both vampires and werewolves, and especially Edward, are all shocked and bewildered by the encounter. The wolves leave, but Jacob stays behind. Referaat Spanish California

MM-14 California's contact with Europeans began in the mid 1530s when Cortez's men ventured to Baja California. Not until 1542 did Spaniards sail north to Alta California, and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's expedition of that year made landings as far north as modern Santa Barbara. The Spaniards, of course, were hardly the first to discover this land of wonder and extremes. The earliest Californians were adventurous Asians who made their way across the Bering Straits to Alaska thousands of years ago when a warmer climate and a now-vanished land bridge made such travel easier. These men and women and their descendants settled North and South America, spreading out to form the various nations and tribes whom the first European visitors to this hemisphere dubbed "Indians." The mountain ranges of the Pacific Coast isolated these early settlers from the cultures that developed in neighboring Mexico and the western United States.

Although the Battle of Largs was indecisive, Haakon's campaign was unsuccessful, and effectively ended Norse influence in western Scotland. The 13th century curtain wall seen from the south-east, across the moat. The bases of the south-east and south-west towers can be seen. The early castle comprised only the roughly circular curtain wall, 3m thick and around 43m across, built on a low mound, with a battlement on top accessed by open stairs. The moat was connected to the sea, the shoreline being some 100m further south than today. The broad crenellations can be made out within the walls, which were later raised. Holes in the upper wall would have supported a timber bretasche, a projecting structure serving as an extended battlement. This curtain wall was built of coursed ashlar, and had only two openings in its length. The

Britain also has many dependant territories which are scattered throughout the world and are the remains of the huge former British Empire. Today Britain assists them, but they may become independent whenever they wish. There have been some difficulties with some of the territories. Argentina has made claims to the Falkland Islands and Spain to Gibraltar. History When the glaciers retreated from Britain about 10,000 years ago, Stone-Age men started to inhabit the isles. The early Britons came across the land bridge which joined Britain to the continent. They were cave-dwellers at first. This way of life was replaced by the invaders from the Mediterranean lands. These men were the first farmers. In about 500 BC came the people whose homeland was near the Rhine River. These were the Celts. The Roman invasion began in 43AD. The most significant was the transition to farming, which has remained at the core of Estonian economy and culture. From approximately the 1st to 5th centuries AD, resident farming was widely established, the population grew, and settlement expanded. Cultural influences from the Roman Empire reached Estonia, and this era is therefore also known as the Roman Iron Age. A more troubled and war-ridden middle Iron Age followed with external dangers coming both from the Baltic tribes, who attacked across the southern land border, and from overseas. Several Scandinavian sagas refer to campaigns against Estonia. Estonian pirates conducted similar raids in the Viking age and sacked and burned the Scandinavian capital of Sigtuna in 1187. By the early 13th century, Estonia was divided into eight large counties -- Saaremaa, Läänemaa, Rävala, Harju, Viru, Järva, Sakala, and Ugandi. Annual consultations were held by representatives of several

Topic - Great Britain

7. Animals, plants Animals The diversity of animals is modest because of several factors: the size of the land area, seasonal changes and the age of habitats on the island. Because GB has a small area, it means that the number of species that can evolve is limited because there is not enough land mass to support the diversity of animals. The environment is very young due to the Ice Age, so there has not been enough time for such diversity to develop. The seasonal changes that occur across the country mean that the animals have less to eat. Since industrialization began in England in the mid eighteenth century, it has had a big impact on indigenous animal populations. Song birds in particular are becoming scarcer and habitat loss has affected larger mammalian species. Some species have however adapted to the urban environments, such as the Red Fox, which is the most successful urban mammal after the Brown Rat. Large mammals are not very numerous in GB

A lamb to the slaughter

She knew he didn't want to speak much until the first drink was finished, and she, on her side, was content to sit quietly, enjoying his company after the long hours alone in the house. She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to feel - almost as a sunbather feels the sun - that warm male glow that came out of him to her when they were alone together. She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room with long strides. She loved intent, far look in his eyes when they rested in her, the funny shape of the mouth, and especially the way he remained silent about his tiredness, sitting still with himself until the whiskey had taken some of it away. "Tired darling?" "Yes," he said. "I'm tired," And as he spoke, he did an unusual thing. He lifted his glass and drained it in one swallow although there was still half of it, at least half of it left. She wasn't really

sequence. 4. Shoot-through, also known as cross-conduction. This is the condition that occurs when the upper and lower transistors on the same side of the coil turn on at the same time. If two transistors turn on at the same time, there will be a very low impedance between the supply voltage and ground -- effectively a short. This usually destroys one or both transistors. In a high-power circuit, the results can be quite dramatic, with blue sparks and pieces of transistor flying across the room. Shoot-through can be caused by bringing inputs high at the same time. It can also be caused by bringing one input high while simultaneously taking the other input low. If one of the transistors in the bridge turns off a little slower than the others turn on, the result will be momentary shoot-through. The usual method to avoid shoot-through is to introduce a short delay between turning off one side of the H-bridge and turning on the other

Indigenous people in australia

In the Dreaming, ancestral beings created features of the land, sea and sky, as well as humans, animals and plants. The Dreaming describes the actions and travels of these beings, some of whom were themselves transformed into features of the landscape, like the Three Sisters rock formation in the Blue Mountains. These beliefs have governed every aspect of Indigenous peoples' lives and relationships with the land. They are the subject of traditional stories, music and artwork across the continent. Art, culture and music Australian Indigenous art is one of the oldest continuous art traditions in the world. The earliest Indigenous art forms were paintings and engravings on boulders, rock shelters and cave walls, some of which date back 30 000 years. Modern Indigenous paintings are the most recent expression of this tradition, which is now acclaimed in Australia and internationally. Body painting, tree carving, bark painting, weaving and sculpture are other traditional

Outdoor education is a beneficial tool to create a sensible and aware society. Todays increasing environmental problems obligates everyone to take responsibility. Students often come across the phrases "recycle" or "reduction of pollution", but not always is the background nor the causes explained thoroughly. Students cannot develop their environmental disposition without effective, meaningful teaching, that outdoor education provides. Teachers can and should give students deeper knowledge about natural resources and how exactly their deficiency will affect them personally. Direct contact is the best way to learn

No one was still around. Then, a pack of matches fell from the weapon-suitcase. "Well, well, well what do we have here?" she asked herself and soon the car was exploding in the fire the girl had made. "Come!" she shouted to her sister and ran towards the first morning bus that was standing across the road. Suzan looked back the halfway and saw the terrible scene her whole house was on fire! She stopped and wanted to go back, but sister pulled her towards. Creasha cried, yet made herself and her twin sister continue their escape. "But mom! And dad! We can't leave them! Crea, we just can't! Let go of me! Hear me? Let me go!" "I'm sorry, but if we want to pay them back someday we must survive you know that!" And so they entered the bus

IS MEDIA DECEIVING AND PACIFYING THE POPULATION?

would be impossible to deceive the public. The truth is media manipulation and propaganda is still all around us. Global news and magazines still dominate what kind of news see on television and latest fashion determines which clothes to wear. The large variety of international media publications does not necessarily mean more opinions as many of them belong the same monopolistic companies, which only distribute their content on different platforms and for different audiences across countries. This kind of concentration of media power can be a real threat to democratic societies. (Concentration, 1980). The story of a man who has taken all control over public media and uses it politically to govern a country is not only the history of Adolf Hitler, but can also be found in the modern day Europe. A living example of this could be found in Italy, where the former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi maintained a tight grip on the public press. Being a prime minister
