The importance of the rainforest

unfortunately, it is still the tropical forests of the world that supply the bulk of the world's demand for wood. In 1950, about 15 percent of the Earth's land surface was covered by rainforest. Today, more than half has already gone up in smoke. In fewer than fifty years, more than half of the world's tropical rainforests have fallen victim to fire and the chain saw, and the rate of destruction is still accelerating. Unbelievably, more than 200,000 acres of rainforest are burned every day. That is more than 150 acres lost every minute of every day, and 78 million acres lost every year! More than 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest is already gone, and much more is severely threatened as the destruction continues. It is estimated that the Amazon alone is vanishing at a rate of 20,000 square miles a year. If nothing is done to curb this trend, the entire Amazon could well be gone within fifty years.

Enivornment in Estonia - Problems and solutions

Estonia's water resources have been affected by agricultural and industrial pollutants, including petroleum products, which have also contaminated the nation's soil. Some rivers and lakes within the country have been found to contain toxic sediments in excess of 10 times the accepted level for safety. The nation's land pollution problems are aggravated by the 15 million tons of pollutants that are added yearly to the existing 250 million tons of pollutants. In 1994, 24,000 acres of the country's total land area were affected. Radiation levels from the nuclear accident at Chernobyl exceed currently accepted safety levels. To sum up, environmental problems should be handled by local and international authorities also. Every single person should take care of environment and moreover we have to bring up our children to be conscious citizens of a clean and preserved planet.

and media attention. Despite the opposition to the cutting down of rain forests, the problem continues. Every year, Brazil chops down an area of forest the size of the state of Nebraska. In addition to the Amazon's rain forests, many other forests are being cut down as well. In Indonesia, Zaire, Papua-New Guinea, Malaysia, Burma, the Philippines, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela, rain forests that were once great have been lost. According to some estimates, 50 million acres of rain forest are cut down every year. The United Nations says the figure is closer to 17 million acres. The World Wildlife Fund says that every minute, 25 to 50 acres are cut or burned to the ground. The world's growing population has been a primary cause of rain forest destruction. More people need land to live on and wood products to consume. Limiting population growth may be the first in a series of steps that would limit the destruction of the rain forests. The Tower of London

With ramparts which were fifteen feet thick at the base and walls soaring ninety feet high, the dominating shadow of the Tower loomed forebodingly over the huddled wooden buildings of medieval London, a visible expression of Norman power. The White Tower consisted of three storeys and contains the austere Norman Chapel of St. John, which remains one of the best preserved examples of a Norman chapel in England. The present castle, now covering eighteen acres evolved around the Conqueror's keep, being added to by successive generations. The Tower of London in The 20th Century During the First World War eleven German spies were shot by firing squad in the Tower of London. Only one bomb was dropped on the Tower during that war and fortunately it fell on the moat. During the Second World War the Tower of London was closed to the public and the crown jewels were removed to a safer location. During the war the Tower suffered

The Palace of Versailles / Versailles' loss

The small lodge was the beginning of an extremely huge palace that would cost the French government more then they could imagine. It is located in the city of Versailles, in northern France, 16 km southwest of Paris.  In order for Louis to have such a wonderful place he hired an architect named Louis Le Vau and a painter named Charles Le Brun. These two men made plans to build a palace that would, including gardens, cover a total of 37,000 acres. When this was completed, the king, decided it was not enough. Jules Hardouin-Mansart was hired to redesign parts of the palace. Louis Le Vau He designed and built the beautiful Hall of Mirrors. The Hall of Mirrors received its name because of the fact that there are three hundred and fifty-seven mirrors decorating the seventeen arches that are opposite of the windows.

Roman Catholic Church was sold or given away and the houses stood empty. The Elizabethan period is often considered to be the golden age. Elizabeth was succeeded by her closest relative James VI of Scotland. The unhappy Stuart Dynasty witnessed the Civil war and the execution of Charles I. In 1660 the throne was taken by Charles II. Unfortunately in 1665 the great Plague was responsible for the deaths of 100,000 Londoners and in 1666 The Great Fire destroyed amost 400 acres. The fire raged for three days and burned down many churches, St. Paul's Cathedral and so on. The tower of London had a lucky escape. The architect Sir christopher Wern lost no time in drawing up plans and giving the entire city a monumental baroque aspect. Many of his plans were never realized, becaus people started rebuilding themselves, but the 50 churches and St, Paul's Cathedral were quite remarkable. Johnny Cash

"Cry! Cry! Cry!" His first prison concert was held on January 1, 1958 at San Quentin State Prison In the early 1960s, Cash toured with the Carter Family. Cash started drinking heavily and became addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates. For a brief time, he shared an apartment in Nashville with Waylon Jennings. In June 1965, his truck caught fire due to an overheated wheel bearing, triggering a forest fire that burned 508 acres (2.06 km2), in Los Padres National Forest in California. The federal government sued him and was awarded $125,172 ($871,303 today). Cash eventually settled the case and paid $82,001. Despite landing in jail seven times for misdemeanors, each stay lasted only a single night. In 1967, Cash's duet with June Carter, "Jackson", won a Grammy Award. From 1969 to 1971, Cash starred in his own television show, The Johnny Cash Show, on the ABC network.

Taj Mahal

The finial provides a clear example of integration of traditional Persian and Hindu decorative elements. The finial is topped by a moon, a typical Islamic motif, whose horns point heavenward. Because of its placement on the main spire, the horns of moon and finial point combine to create a trident shape, reminiscent of traditional Hindu symbols of Shiva. Construction The Taj Mahal was built on a parcel of land to the south of the walled city of Agra. An area of roughly three acres was excavated, filled with dirt to reduce seepage and leveled at 50 meters above riverbank. In the tomb area, wells were dug and filled with stone and rubble as the footings of the tomb. Instead of lashed bamboo, workmen constructed a colossal brick scaffold that mirrored the tomb. The scaffold was so enormous that foremen estimated it would take years to dismantle. According to the legend, Shah Jahan decreed that anyone could

Tower of London The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror to protect and control the city of London. When it was first built it lay within the old Roman City Walls. In the 13th century it was enlarged beyond those walls. Including the moat, it now covers 18 acres. The White Tower is the only remaining Norman building. Since successive monarchs have modified it and added to it, most of the architectural styles popular over the centuries can be found within The Tower's walls. The Tower has been used as fortress, a palace, and a prison. It has housed the Royal Mint, the Public Records, and the Royal Observatory. US History: Native Americans and the first settlements

winter of 1838 and 1839, the Cherokees were forcibly moved west by the United States government. Approximately 4,000 Cherokees died on this forced march, which became known as the "Trail of Tears." By 1837, the Jackson administration had removed 46,000 Native American people from their land east of the Mississippi, and had secured treaties which led to the removal of a slightly larger number. Most members of the five southeastern nations had been relocated west, opening 25 million acres of land to white settlement and to slavery. Reservations After being forced off their native lands, many American Indians found life to be most difficult. Beginning in the first half of the 19th century, federal policy dictated that certain tribes be confined to fixed land plots to continue their traditional ways of life. Besides the moral issue of depriving a people of life on their historic land, many economic issues plagued the reservation

shilling extra. Finally Chelsea successfully opened on Tuesday 20 May 1913, for three days. Curiously there is no Council report on how this Show actually went. The Gardner's Chronicle, which provided the best written records of the early Shows, was more forthcoming. The first Chelsea "had exceeded all expectations". The tent, it reported, were 300ft (100m) long and 275ft (80m) wide, taking up six spans and over 2 acres (0,8hectares). Of a total 73,000sq ft (6,780sq m), more than 21,000sq ft (1,950sq m) were allotted to 84 large groups of flowers, plants, and shrubs, with another 7,500 ft (696sq m) used for95 exhibits on tables. There were 17 large rock, formal, or paved gardens arranged in the open air. In all there were 303 exhibits organized ny244 exhibitors, compared with a mere 25,000sq ft (2,322sq m) and only 126 exhibitions at the Society's Inner Temple show in 1911. Douglass spoke about race at many schools around the country throughout the Reconstruction era, including Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in April of 1874.[1] Later life In 1877, Frederick Douglass purchased his final home in Washington D.C., on the banks of the Anacostia River. He named it Cedar Hill (also spelled CedarHill). He expanded the house from 14 to 21 rooms and included a china closet. One year later, Douglass expanded his property to 15 acres (61,000 m²), with the purchase of adjoining lots. The home is now the location of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. After the disappointments of Reconstruction, many African Americans called Exodusters moved to Kansas to form all-black towns. Douglass spoke out against the movement, urging blacks to stick it out. He was condemned and booed by black audiences. 7

Biogas – The source of future energy

Economical Estimating an average per capita consumption of 3 kg of wood per day for energy (cooking, heating and boiling water) in rural areas, the daily per capita demand of energy equals about 13 kWh which could be covered by about 2 m3 of biogas. A biogas plant therefore directly saves forest. Annually, each biogas plant can save more than four ton's of firewood and 32 liters of kerosene. A single biogas system with a volume of 100 cubic feet (2,8 m3) can save as much as 0.3 acres (0,12 ha) of forest (woodland) each year. A recent study by Winrock, Nepal and others found that each biogas plant can mitigate about five tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year. Dangers of biogas Anaerobic digestion systems and associated manure storage and handling present many safety hazards. A good designer and responsible digester owner will learn about and be concerned with safety from the very beginning of any digester project. A

CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

have a sense of urgency. Only a small percentage of the population moves quickly when opportunity or responsibility presents itself. You must be a member of this small percentage. When I was younger, I used to think that when my opportunity came along I would take advantage of it at that time. I soon learned that your opportunity never does just come along. Russell Conwell made this point in his famous story, Acres of ccc_tracy_4_52-76.qxd 6/23/03 2:47 PM Page 73 Decide to Become Rich ➤ 73 Diamonds (Berkley, 1986). In summary, it says that in most cases your greatest opportunities lie under your own feet. They are right where you are. They lie within your current talents, skills, ability, and experience. They lie within your own business or industry.

What wilt thou do for her? KING CLAUDIUS O, he is mad, Laertes. QUEEN GERTRUDE 178 For love of God, forbear him. HAMLET 'Swounds, show me what thou'lt do: Woo't weep? woo't fight? woo't fast? woo't tear thyself? Woo't drink up eisel? eat a crocodile? I'll do't. Dost thou come here to whine? To outface me with leaping in her grave? Be buried quick with her, and so will I: And, if thou prate of mountains, let them throw Millions of acres on us, till our ground, Singeing his pate against the burning zone, Make Ossa like a wart! Nay, an thou'lt mouth, I'll rant as well as thou. QUEEN GERTRUDE This is mere madness: And thus awhile the fit will work on him; Anon, as patient as the female dove, When that her golden couplets are disclosed, His silence will sit drooping. HAMLET Hear you, sir; What is the reason that you use me thus? I loved you ever: but it is no matter; Let Hercules himself do what he may,

(This figure excludes cryptologic personnel serving under theater commanders overseas.) Nevertheless, the personnel supply never caught up to the demand. In April, 1944, for example, the agency had more than 1,000 civilian positions empty. But its growth soon made more space necessary. Like the Navy, it found a former girls' school ideal for its purposes. During the summer of 1942, it moved from the Munitions Building to Arlington Hall, whose brick buildings stood on 58 wooded acres fronting on Glebe Road in Arlington, Virginia, about three miles from downtown Washington and away from the eyes of enemy agents. The agency soon outgrew even this, and in the late fall of 1942 began expanding into Vint Hill Farms, an old estate in the Virginia horse country about 50 miles from Washington. Giant intercepting towers and half a dozen ugly barracks-like buildings soon disfigured the lovely Blue Ridge foothills, and here, in rooms filled with desks with tilted tops,
