Revision Questions

This does not mean that no human eye had been cast on America before Columbus arrived. It does mean that Columbus brought America to the attention of the civilized world, i.e., to the growing, scientific civilizations of Western Europe. The result, ultimately, was the United States of America. It was Columbus' discovery for Western Europe that led to the influx of ideas and people on which this nation was founded--and on which it still rests. The opening of America brought the ideas and achievements of Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, and the thousands of thinkers, writers, and inventors who followed. Queen Isabella pawning her jewels to finance Columbus' trip. This myth of the pawned jewels obscures the true and more sinister story of how Columbus financed his trip. The Spanish monarch invested in his excursion, but only on the condition that Columbus would repay this investment with profit by bringing back gold, spices, and other tribute from Asia

English literature

Soul cosmic and human, is an intermediary between them. The soul is constantly struggling while the intellect is changeless and eternal. C.L as a set of ideas appears in the songs of the troubadours in Provence. C.L is the privilege of the knightly class. The relationship between the lover and his lady is similar to feudal service, he seeks her love not for personal enrichment or dynastic considerations, but because he desires her as a person and hopes to be judged by his achievements. It can never lead to marriage, because either they are married, or socially don't suit, the secrecy is vital. But the lover should love only one lady. 8.Medev.lit.in the rom. Mode. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Nothing is known about the author, except that he probably wrote the 3 religious poems- Pearl, Patience and Purity. The dialect points to an origin in provincial England. The author was a most sophisticated and urbane writer, must have been contemporary of Chauser. S

fight successfully against two Boer republics and make them part of the British Empire. The Potato Famine, which hit Ireland between 1845 and 1850, was one of the greatest natural disasters the Western world has seen. Ireland lost about half o its population: one million died and another million emigrated. Irish corn crops remained unaffected, but they were exported. Profit counted more than human lives. The Victorian age is also known for its literary achievements. Charles Dickens is considered one of the greatest English novelists of all time. His books included "Oliver Twist", "Old Curiosity Shop", "Nicholas Nickleby" and others. He became very rich and used his wealth for the antislavery movement, social housing projects and international copyright laws. At the same as the middle classes were expanding in Victorian Britain, so were the working classes. New industries were developed, new factories were built and Britain's

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

Estonian symphonic music. Other Estonian literature on this subject has offered a broader background. This book should appeal to composers, musicologists, conductors, educationalists, instrumentalists, music students, as well as everybody interested in Estonian symphonic music. The book is divided into 29 chapters where more than 70 orchestral compositions of 32 composers are examined. The background on the developments in music is illustrated through historical data and cultural achievements in literature, art, theatre and film in all their complexity. For making the music accessible 238 score examples (piano arrangements and some score originals) have been added. There is a Bibliography and list of useful addresses. I have worked on this text for twenty-five years, with some intervals, paying a lot of attention to the phenomena of cultural life in general. Without this background and the changes in it there would be no new and novel happenings in the Arts. For

The Origins of American Literature

The Civil War years During the Civil War, Whitman served as a volunteer nurse in military hospitals and as a correspondent for The New York Times. His experience among the wounded inspired him to write two collections of poems: Drum Taps (1865) and Sequel (1865-66), which includes his famous elegy to Abraham Lincoln, `O Captain! My Captain!' Last years He spent the rest of his life working on the subsequent editions of Leaves of Grass, which grew to include 400 poems. His literary achievements were largely disregarded by the public of his day, which was shocked by his frankness in sexual matters and his rough working man image. He held a series of minor posts in Washington and struggled to survive on a meagre income. In 1873 he suffered a paralysing stroke. He continued to add to Leaves of Grass right up until his death in 1892. Works Farther of American poetry Whitman was the first distinctly Am voice in poetry

SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING GUIDELINES

for a given period of operation (most often a year). These absolute figures might be expressed in a currency or in physical units (such as tonnes, cubic metres, or gigajoules). Absolute figures provide information on the size of an impact, value, or achievement. Relative figures are ratios between two absolute figures of the same or different kind. Ratios allow comparisons of similar products or processes. They also help relate the performance and achievements of one firm, business unit, or organisation to those of another. Ratio indicators provide information on the efficiency of an activity, on the intensity of an impact, or on the quality of a value or achievement. Need for Reporting Absolute Figures Absolute figures provide information about the magnitude of the reporting organisation’s contribution to an overall effect. They are essential to any assessment of carrying capacity, ceiling, or limits—a core principle of sustainability

Philip Larkin’s Poetry: Themes, Form, Style, Imagery and Symbolism

fruitful in the analysis of poetry in general, and Larkin’s poems in particular, than a thematic one. Regan quotes some authors who maintain the view that Larkin’s stylistic effects are based upon a combination of metaphoric (literary) and metonymic (colloquial) language. He, however, can fully accept the method based upon this stylistic distinction only if it analyses poetry in the context of the society in which it was written. Similarly, Regan acknowledges the achievements of what he calls the “symbolist approach”, since it points out the link between Larkin and (both French and English) symbolism. Again, however, he sees it as problematic that this approach tends to view literary trends outside their social context. Instead of the rejected methods, his ambition in the second part of his monograph is to offer “a more responsive and responsible historicist criticism”.

Bridges presentation

Zhaozhou Bridge (c AD 605), attributed to Li Chun and built south-west of Beijing in Hebei Province during the Song Dynasty. Its thin, curved stone slabs were joined with iron dovetails so that the arch could yield without collapsing. This technique allowed the bridge to adjust to the rise and fall of abutments bearing on spongy, plastic soils and the live loads of traffic. Following the decline of the Roman Empire with its many engineer- ing achievements, beam, arch, suspension, and cantilever bridge building flourished in China while languishing in Europe for nearly eight centuries. Chinese bridge builders experimented with forms and materials, perfecting their techniques. Selected examples, found in the countryside and parks, may be candidates for World Heritage listing. Other fine bridges survive in Iran, such as the Bridge of Khaju at Isfahan (1667), with eighteen

misunderstood and misinterpreted. Literally translated from the ancient Greek in which the New Testament was written, to sin means to miss the mark, as an archer who misses the target, so to sin means to miss the point of human existence. It means to live unskillfully, blindly, and thus to suffer and cause suffering. Again, the term, stripped of its cultural baggage and misinterpretations, points to the dysfunction inherent in the human condition. The achievements of humanity are impressive and undeniable. We have created sublime works of music, literature, painting, architecture, and sculpture. More recently, science and technology have brought about radical changes in the way we live and have enabled us to do and create things that would have been considered miraculous even two hundred years ago. I believe it to be true that, from the point of view of the material previously published in books on cryptology, what is new in this book is 85 to 90 per cent. Yet it is not exhaustive. A foolish secrecy still clothes much of World War II cryptology—though I believe the outlines of the achievements are known—and to tell just that story in full would require a book the size of this. Even in, say, the 18th century, the unexplored manuscript material is very great. Nor is this a textbook. I have sketched a few methods of solution. For some readers even this will be too much; them I advise skip this material. They will not have a full understanding of what is going on, but that will not cripple their comprehension of the stories. For readers who want more detail on these methods, I
