English portfolio

This triangle witnessed a lively movement and exchange of people and ideas. Inspired and encouraged by this new chance, Estonians were now among the first in the world, as regards the growing rate of the number of academic intelligentsia. The chief places to study were Tartu, St Petersburg, Riga, Moscow and Helsinki. Estonian culture became ever more professional and Estonian scientific terminology developed rapidly. Several scientists of Estonian origin attracted world-wide attention within the institutional framework of Russian science. Estonian high culture developed under the direct impact of the St Petersburg academic and modernist cultural life. The group called Noor-Eesti (Young Estonia), founded by young writers Gustav Suits, Friedebert Tuglas and others, called upon the Estonians to create...

Two very different towns of Estonia

Two very different towns of Estonia I would like to write about two very different towns of Estonia. One is Paide and the second is Tallinn. These cities for most people, would be quite incomparable, but if you really are interested in Estonian culture , then you most certainly have to visit them both. Paide most often described as the center of Estonia, is one of the most historic cities in Estonia as its first mentioned in the writings as early as 1265, also it was one of the first cities in Estonia to receive ,,city" title as early as 1295.. Many would say that the city, now, is rather an rundown than an touristy city, but I most certainly believe that maybe...

Majandussotsioloogia Tekstid 1-3 2020

Majandussotsioloogia Seminar 2 Tekst 1 Jekaterina Bavõkina 193893TABB Tekst 1: Eesti Inimarengu Aruanne (EIA) 2016/2017, Põhisõnumid. Eesti rändeajastul. Tiit Tammaru, Kristina Kallas, Raul Eamets. Rändel on üks tunnusjoon: see on tõmme heaolu poole. Inimesed rändavad küll erinevatel põhjustel, olgu see töötamine, perega seotud tegurid, õppimine või põge- nemine tagakiusamise eest, kuid minnakse riikidesse, kus elu on parem. Eesti on pagulast...

Links between Estonia and English speaking countries

2% and it gave the UK the 11th place among Estonia's import partners. The cultural relations between Estonia and English speaking countries are also active. It is of course said that the direction of the culture is towards Estonia, meaning that the American version of lifestyle tends to suppress the Estonian way of living. It is easy to notice. For instance much more American films are shown in Estonia, than Estonian films in the United States. Although we might think that Estonian culture is not represented in the English speaking world at all this is not true. Probably one of the most famous Estonians, that most people who are interested in music know, is Arvo Pärt. Well known compositors and conductors are also Erkki-Sven Tüür and Paavo Järvi, who conducts the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Mark Kalev Kostabi, a US-born Estonian artist has established an enormous studio in the heart of New York City, where annually about 1,500 works of art come into being....

Straitland

Straitland Historical Facts Straitland has served as a junction of international trade routes for Vikings. Long struggle of power with foreign intruders has left ancient strongholds in Valjala, Lihula and Soontagana. The churches in Muhu, Valjala, Mustjala, Karja and Kihelkonna are honorable and elderly because Straitland was the one to bring Christianity to Estonia. The castle of Kuressaare is still standing proudly, but in Lihula only ruins can be seen. The patterns of national dresses and the churches bring memories of secret sign cultures of Medieval Times. Good knowledge of singing and facilit...

Why travel?

What could be better? For some people, this is the main point for travelling, yet others try to experience the culture and visit as many sightseeings as possible. Young people choose their destination to somewhere warm and also by the cost, because what is the point of ,,windbathing" in Europe or somewhere like that. Meeting new people, partying till the dawn and comparing each other tans is really fun and relaxing. I find these vacations very memorable because they are so different from the Estonian summers. But travelling is not only for party people, it is also for those who love to discover the foreign world, take pictures of exciting sightseeings while also enjoying it. People who like this kind of travelling are usually adults and elders who want something...

Topic - Estonia

Estonia has rich culture . Music and dances have always played an important role in people's life. The most original part of Estonian folklore is the runic folksong. It was based on the alteration of long and short syllables. In different folksongs either men or women sang and the songs were often accompanied by a musical instrument. Today folksongs are often used by modern composers. A major change in Estonian culture occurred during the period of the National Awakening. Choirs and brassbands were founded in every corner of Estonia, it culminated with the 1 st Song Festival in 1869. Since then the Song Festivals have taken place every 4-5 years and have certainly helped Estonians maintain their national identity. Tallinn is the seat of the Estonian National Opera. The Chamber Choir of the Estonian Philharmonic Society is also greatly appreciated thanks to the charisma and hard work of its long-time ex-...

Topic - Sport

Introduction For some people sport plays a very important part in their lives. And to some, it is even a way of life. There are different kinds of sports. For instance, there are sports meant for playing indoors, some can be practised only at a certain time of year. There are winter and summer sports also. Skiing, figure-skating, sledding and snowboarding these four most popular are practised during winter. Good examples of summer sports are: swimming, badminton, roller skating and golf. 2. The ancient Olympic Games The first recorded Olympic Games took place in 776. B.C. at Olympia but the city may have functioned as a meeting place for worship and other political practices many years earlier. The city is located in western Greece. The games were held every four years. It is also presumed that such competitions pleased the s...

Art Museum of Estonia

Art Museum of Estonia Art Museum of Estonia was founded on November 17th, 1919, but it was not until 1921 that it got its first permanent building the Kadriorg Palace, built in the 18th century. In 1929 the palace was expropriated from the Art Museum in order to rebuild it as the residence of the President of Estonia. The Art Museum of Estonia was housed in several different temporary spaces, until it moved back to the palace in 1946. In September, 1991 the Kadriorg Palace was closed, because it had totally deteriorated by then. At the end of the year the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia decided to guarantee the construction of a new building for the Art Museum of Estonia in Kadriorg. Untill then the Knighthood House at Toompea Hill served as the temporary main building of the Art Museum of Estonia. The exhibition there was opened on April 1, 1993. Art Museum of Estonia premanently closed down the exhibitions in that buildi...

Learning foreign language - Why is it necessary?

It makes your life easier if you can learn some larger language than Estonian . Estonian is very little language and example is quite hard to get god job if you cannot speak some world language. This is very positive that we can learn at least two foreign language in the school. Very important is than we get practice beside school lessons. Some things like watching films and listening music make us understand this language better. In the future I would like to learn french and Swedish but first I should learn to speak Russian and English correctly. If we travel, we anyway communicate with different people and it's easier to make contact than we can speak language very well. And communicating with different people make our world-view larger. If...

Introduction Tallinn, the capital city of the Republic of Estonia and of the Harju county, is a town in North Estonia on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. It has nearly half a million inhabitants and covers an area of almost 160 sqkm. It is also an important economic and cultural centre and one of the main ports in the Baltic States. Every five years national song and folk dance festivals take place in Tallinn. The yachting regatta of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games was held at Pirita. inglise keeles Eesti tutvustus: Project: Estonia

Project ESTONIA MAP OF ESTONIA Southern Viljandimaa The southern part of Viljandi county catches the eye with its sublime scenery. The area today lies in the very heart of the historical Mulgimaa the home of hills, deep valleys and lakes brought together by a beauty spot Halliste primeval valley. According to several folk tales, it is also in these valleys, woods and bogs that Old Nick found refuge. The great variety displayed in the nature is also reflected in the local cultural heritage. At the beginning of the 19th century growing linen spread and became the basis of the legendary wealth of Mulgi farms. The ancient barn-dwellings and decaying manor houses are the mute witnesses of those times. The riches and cultural heritage of Mulgimaa owe to the diligence and tenacity of the local people. Village handicraftsmen and masters have always been honoured. Mulgikapsad (stewed sauerkraut with barley gro...
