quality, starting several new trends. Britain, along with the US, was the main contributor in the development of rock and roll, and Britain has provided some of the most famous bands, including The Beatles and many others. Britain was at the forefront of punk music (see below) in the 1970s with bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash, and the subsequent rebirth of heavy metal with bands such as Motorhead and Iron Maiden. Music in Britain from 1920s to the Present Day 1920s - Young people listened to ragtime and jazz. 1930s - Swing became popular. Benny Goodman and his Orchestra were the 'King of the Swing', as were Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw. The music was fast and frantically paced and led to dances being banned from dance halls, as the young women being flung into the air by their partners showed their stocking tops and underwear. Jazz continued to be popular.

Guitar and Mandolin Guitar (kitarr) and mandolin (mandoliin) spread among the folk in the early 20th century. They became popular first with spiritual, but also with sentimental secular music making. posters, and illustration There were used alot of muted greens, browns, yellows, and blues. Art Nouveau's ubiquity in the late-19th century must be explained in part by many artists' use of popular and easily reproduced forms, found in the graphic arts. Art Nouveau was often most conspicuous at international expositions during its heyday. The style went out of fashion for the most part long before the First World War, paving the way for the development of Art Deco in the 1920s, but it experienced a popular revival in the 1960s, and it is now seen as an important predecessor - if not an integral component - of modernism.

Mardi Gras esitlus

350 floats and 15,000 costumed paraders take over the scene. Symbols The millions of colorful beaded necklaces thrown from floats are the most visible symbols and souvenirs of Mardi Gras. The tradition of throwing beads and small trinkets from Mardi Gras parade floats dates back almost as long as the parades themselves. Originally, the beaded necklaces were made from glass, but the Krewes switched to plastic in the mid 1900s. Throws started in the 1920s when Rex and a few other Krewes started throwing small trinkets. In addition, millions of cups, stuffed animals, plastic cups, small toys and even bags and toy coins known as "doubloons"are decorated with krewe logos and thrown to parade-watchers. Mardi Gras around the world In Ireland, Australia, and Canada, Mardi Gras is known as "Pancake Tuesday", while in Britain it is popularly known as "Pancake Day". However, by the end of the novel, she did get engaged, which can be seen from a conversation between Nick and Jordan as Nick says that "there were several she could have married at a nod of her head /.../" (Fitzgerald 1993: 160), which means that for a long time, Jordan chose not to marry, ignoring society's pressure and its prototypical image of the 1920s women. When it came to her personality, Jordan was portrayed to be quite arrogant and restless, and she somehow thought herself to be better than others, especially, when it concerned the people who lived in West Egg. For example, the first time she spoke to Nick "she remarked contemptuously, that he lived in West Egg" (Fitzgerald 1993: 27). This period called "The Golden Age of Television" because at that time, the television spread across America very fast. According to The Television Industry: A Historical Dictionary, "the Golden Age opened with Kraft Television Theatre on May 7, 1947 and ended with the last live show in the Playhouse 90( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHPdXQwRnoc ) series ten years later. Television became available in crude experimental forms in the late 1920s, but it would still be several years before the new technology was marketed to consumers. After World War II, an improved form of black-and-white TV broadcasting became popular in the United States and Britain, and television sets became commonplace in homes, businesses, and institutions. By extending the senses of vision and hearing beyond the limits of physical distance, television has had a considerable influence on society. Mostly television was accessible to the richest classes of society.

ABOUT SERIAL KILLERS

The man "raped, mutilated, and murdered an estimated 150 children (though some estimates put that number over 800)" over the course of about 20 years (4). He was executed in 1440 as perhaps one of the world's earliest serial killers. I mentioned Jack the Ripper earlier as perhaps one of the most famous historical serial killers. His exploits in 19th century London were the basis for a surge in public interest into serial killing. In the 1920s there were two films based on stories of serial killing. In the 2000s, more than 300 of the released films were based on serial killers, fictional and historical alike. (5) III. The psychology of serial killers "But she or he was a kind, sympathetic person!" is a common cry after ruling that someone is guilty of serial murder, because serial killers are normal people. There are lots of other problems with trying to profile serial killers - for example, Finnish serial killers

THE HISTORY OF JOURNALISM

for future historians. About "nowadays" journalism: Johann Carolus's "Relation aller Fürnemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien", published in 1605 in Strassburg, is often recognized as the first newspaper. The first successful English daily, the Daily Courant, was published from 1702 to 1735.The first dedicated school for journalism, Missouri School of Journalism, was founded in 1908 in the United States of America by Walter Williams. In the 1920s, as modern journalism was just taking form, writer Walter Lippmann and American philosopher John Dewey debated over the role of journalism in a democracy. Their differing philosophies still characterize a debate about the role of journalism in society and the nation- state. The journalist became the middleman. When elites spoke, journalists listened and recorded the information, distilled it, and passed it on to the public for their consumption. The public is not

The name Patkul itself comes from Johann Patkul. He had worked against the Swede, so Patkul was remembered by Russians. In the Middle Ages that part of Toompea where the castle stands was called the Small Fortress. The rest of the hill with the homes of the feudal lords and bishop of Tallinn was called the Big Fortress. The main building, the centre of the Small Fortress, was the Convention House- a building where the members of the knighthood lived. In the 1920s the reconstruction of the building was carried out. The northern part of it became the seat of the State Assembly of the Estonian Republic. In the 19th century a public garden was laid out the Governor's Garden. Town Wall and its Towers The first town wall of Tallinn, which was rather low and modest, was built in the second half of the 13th century. It was called Margaret's Wall by the Danish queen Margaret in 1265

Suhestatud võimekus võimul on tinglik, kuid mitte kindlaks tehtud struktureeritud võimekuses domineerida.

were established and men could no longer be excluded from universities or politics because of their religion. Victorian Britain The Victorian age began in 1837, which lasted until Queen Victoria's death in 1901. The period was dominated by three men her Prince Consort, Albert of Saxe-Coburg and two outstanding prime ministers, William Gladstone and Benjamin Disreali. By the end of her reign the nation was the most powerful in the world and by the 1920s the British Empire comprised about a quarter of the world's territory and population. Victoria had nine children, who eventually became the monarchs of many European countries like Russia, German, Sweden and Greece. After Prince Albert's death Victoria withdrew from most public appearances for years. She put much effort into planning and building a series of memorials to her husband. During the last decades of her life she once again involved herself in state and political matters.

Arthur Conan Doyle

His work on this topic was one of the reasons that one of his short story collections, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 for supposed occultism. This ban was later lifted. Russian actor Vasily Livanov later received an Order of the British Empire for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle was friends for a time with the American magician Harry Houdini, who himself became a prominent opponent of the Spiritualist movement in the 1920s following the death of his beloved mother. Although Houdini insisted that Spiritualist mediums employed trickery (and consistently attempted to expose them as frauds), Conan Doyle became convinced that Houdini himself possessed supernatural powers, a view expressed in Conan Doyle's The Edge of the Unknown. Houdini was apparently unable to convince Conan Doyle that his feats were simply magic tricks, leading to a bitter public falling out between the two.

Street Art

Whether it is regarded as vandalism or public art, street art has caught the interest of the art world and its lovers of beauty. ([http://artradarjournal.com/2010/01/21/what-is-street-art- vandalism-graffiti-or-public-art-part-i/] 14.01.18) 2. WHERE DID IT COME FROM? Some of the earliest expressions of street art were certainly the graffiti which started showing up on the sides of train cars and walls. This was the work of gangs in the 1920s and 1930s New York. The impact of this subversive culture was extraordinarily felt in the 1970s and 1980s. This cultural movement was recorded in the book The History of American Graffiti, by Roger Gastman and Caleb Neelon. These decades were a significant turning point in the history of street art – it was a time when young people, by responding to their socio-political environment, started creating a movement, taking the ‘battle for meaning’ into their own hands.

male character. Forster was born at 6 Melcombe Place, Dorset Square, London. He attended Tonbridge School in Kent as a day boy. The theatre at the school is named after him. King's College, Cambridge between 1897 and 1901, he became a member of the Apostles. After leaving university he travelled on the continent with his mother. He visited Egypt, Germany and India with the classicist Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson in 1914. Forster spent a second spell in India in the early 1920s as the private secretary to the Maharajah of Dewas. The Hill of Devi is his non-fictional account of this trip. While living at the court, Forster has the first ongoing sexual relationship of his life, with Kanaya, a young boy who serves him also as barber. Forster had a happy personal relationship, beginning in the early 1930s, with Bob Buckingham, a constable in the London Metropolitan Police. After the death of his mother, Forster accepted an honorary fellowship at King's College,

Kubism

[4] This painting marked the beginning of his "mechanical period", during which the figures and objects he created were characterized by sleekly rendered tubular and machine-like forms. Starting in 1918, he also produced the first paintings in the Disk series, in which disks suggestive of traffic lights figure prominently.[5] In December 1919 he married Jeanne- Augustine Lohy, and in 1920 he met Le Corbusier, who would remain a lifelong friend. The "mechanical" works Léger painted in the 1920s, in their formal clarity as well as in their subject matter--the mother and child, the female nude, figures in an ordered landscape --are typical of the postwar "return to order" in the arts, and link him to the tradition of French figurative painting represented by Poussin and Corot.[6] In his paysages animés (animated landscapes) of 1921, figures and animals exist harmoniously in landscapes made up of streamlined forms. The frontal compositions, firm contours, and smoothly blended colors

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

By the 1889s other applications for rockets were being developed. They were used for signalling, for whaling, and even for rescuing people from sinking ships. If a boat got into trouble near to the shore, a rocket with a thin rope tied to it would be fired out over the boat; survivors in lifeboats could use the ropes to pull themselves ashore. These traditional rockets are still used as distress signals on boats and planes. However, in the 1920s and 30s a great leap forward in the use of rockets took place with the introduction of liquid fuel. This made rockets much more powerful. The new rockets were so impressive that for the first time people began to seriously think about using rockets to take people to space. The development of the space rockets took place during World War II. It was the Germans who built the first really big rockets, as a way of bombing Britain without needing to use aircraft. First the V1 was

novels, novellas and short stories. However, he was also a published poet and an occasional screenwriter. Most of Faulkner's works are set in his native state of Mississippi, and he is considered one of the most important Southern writers, along with Mark Twain, Robert Penn Warren, Flannery O'Connor, Truman Capote, Eudora Welty, and Tennessee Williams. While his work was published regularly starting in the mid 1920s, Faulkner was relatively unknown before receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is now deemed among the greatest American writers of all time. crisis. This is that film. It depicts OP-20-G and S.I.S. in the 24 hours preceding the Pearl Harbor attack, with the events of the past as prologue. It is the story of one day of MAGIC. The two American cryptanalytic agencies had not sprung full-blown into being like Athena from the brow of Zeus. The Navy had been solving at least the simpler Japanese diplomatic and naval codes in Rooms 1649 and 2646 on the "deck" above since the 1920s. The Army's cryptanalytical work during the 1920s was centered in the so-called American Black Chamber under Herbert O. Yardley, who had organized it as a cryptologic section of military intelligence in World War I. It was maintained in secrecy in New York jointly by the War and State departments, and perhaps its greatest achievement was its 1920 solution of Japanese diplomatic codes. At the same time, the Army's cryptologic research and code-compiling functions were handled by William

In the UK it is known as the Colorpoint Longhair (or Colourpoint Persian). In the USA, Himalayans with tabby or tortie points are known as Colorpoint Longhair in some registries. Experimental breeding of Siamese and Persians dates back as far as the 1920s. The first recorded deliberate cross between Siamese and longhaired cats was made by Swedish geneticist T Tjebbes in 1924 using white longhairs. However it was not his intention to create a new breed for the cat fancy. In 1931 in the USA, Virginia Cobb and Dr. Clyde Keeler began an experimental breeding programme with the purpose of learning the inheritance involved in producing a

Energy - põhjalik referaat energiast

Later, people built windmills to grind wheat and other grains. The earliest known windmills were in Persia (Iran). These early windmills looked like large paddle wheels. Centuries later, the people of Holland improved the basic design of the windmill. They gave it propeller-type blades, still made with sails. Holland is famous for its windmills. American colonists used windmills to grind wheat and corn, to pump water, and to cut wood at sawmills. As late as the 1920s, Americans used small windmills to generate electricity in rural areas without electric service. When power lines began to transport 31 electricity to rural areas in the 1930s, local windmills were used less and less, though they can still be seen on some Western ranches. The oil shortages of the 1970s changed the energy picture for the country and the world. It
