A long time ago, when people lived in small communities, only one name was given to a baby. As the population increased, there were too many people living in the same place and having the same name. Between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, depending on the part of Britain, families began to add an extra name to baby's first name. Many surnames were given after a person's father or mother.
