Cities Muckanaghederdauhaulia - This is probably the longest place name in Ireland. it consists of 22 letters There is also a village in Ireland called '' Inch village'' outside the village there is a sign '' Inch 1 mile'' i couldn't find a picture of it from the internet so i created a sign myself to make it more clear, so that can be quite confusing for a foreigner The capital city , Dublin was founded by the Vikings in 841 Worth to mention The Titanic was built in Harland and Wolff yards in Belfast , which is nowadays part of the Northern Ireland , but back then in 1909 - 1912 (which is the time when Titanic was built ) it was still part of the Ireland. So the worlds most famous ship was built in Ireland. Also Guinness beer originated in Arthur Guinness' brewery at St. James's Gate in Dublin. Nowadays it is one of the most successful beer brands in the world, being exported worldwide. sports : First I'm going...

English Parliament

Mikk Hödemann 12.d klass English Parliament What can I say about the English history at all? I think that this is the most interesting history I had to study. During this subject (British civilization), I discovered some exciting facts, occasions which took place in the British history. One of these "discoveries" was the English Parliament. I was amazed how fast it grew within the centuries, from eleventh to seventeenth centuries. The political history of British Isles over the past 800 years has been largely one of reducing the power of the monarchy and transferring authority to a London-based Parliament as the sovereign legislative body for all of Britain. This development has resulted in political, social and religious conflicts, as well as evolving governmental and constitutional institutions. The early political history of the British Isles is the story of four independent cou...

Bees

BEES Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants. There are nearly 20,000 known species of bee, in nine recognized families, though many are undescribed and the actual number is probably higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants. Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source, and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used as food for larvae. Bees have a long proboscis (a complex "tongue") that enables them to obtain the nectar from flowers. They have antennae almost universally made up of 13 segments in males and 12 in females, as is typical for the superfamily. Bees all have two pairs of wings, the hind pair being the smaller of the two; in a very few species, one sex or caste has relatively short wings tha...

How has the nature of fame changed?

How has the nature of fame changed? Imagine two celebrities standing in front of you: Audrey Hepburn and Kim Kardashian? Is there anything different in the way they are or how they became famous? It’s no surprise that the way celebrities present themselves has changed immeasurably since the Golden Age of Hollywood. Back in the day, celebrities were presented as incomparably glamorous, flawless beings, closer to gods than humans. Fame was controlled not by the famous and certainly not by the audience, but by the owners of the media. The lives of the rich and the famous used to be mysterious and even inexplicable. It was so foreign and artificial a construct that we thought that fame made you special. The rise of reality TV, however, was a major step in the changing nature of celebrity. “Normal people” became stars overnight. The dominance of smartphones and social media has meant that the public records everyth...

Crime

Crime In the sociological field, crime is the breach of a rule or law for which some governing authority or force may ultimately prescribe a punishment. The word crime originates from the Latin crimen. Even in society there are always black sheep and these people are called 'criminals'. Estonia is a relatively safe country, although there are some situations, where people should be more careful crime has been increased lately. We could count different type of crimes, but most common are smuggling and robberies. Many people like something, what do not belong to them. On the one hand, news are talking about shoplifting, bank robbery and vandalism. When looking for the reasons why people commit crimes I can only say what I believe to be sure of, and it is that individuals go against laws because they choose so, as criminal behaviour is a matter of choice. People want to have somebody`s things...

Article:How to be a better guest

How to be a better guest There is something about Estonians As there has been a big increase in the number of people applying for study exchanges to Estonia, it is good to know some rules, habits and social life about Estonians. Being first time with new family you should know, that keeping a low profile is a half success. As the Estonians are uncommunicative people, the first look matters also a lot. But sometimes Estonians like open people too, who talk a lot, because we like to hear a lot but not talk much about ourselves. Secondly the Estonians do not hug and kiss on their first meetings. It is common in relationship or friendship but not in the first meeting. Shaking hands or just saying `'Tere'', which means hello, would be appropriate. Of course when they get to know you more and take you as a one of them, then there will be a variety of different greetings. But first stay on `'Tere'' because it shows respect and is...

Schools should provide computers for every student

Schools should provide computers for every student In recent times, captious opinion has appeared referring the use of computers by adolescents and children in education at the primary and high school levels. Internet has become an essential tool for many students. A lot of students like doing researches on their own computers at home, while doing homework or discovering something new for themselves. High school students are often asked to write different essays, letters of reviews on topics they have been studying at school. In addition not all of them have time to deal with homework at home. So if school gave them computers, they could use their free time during breaks to do essential things for their education. Or if school allowed to take computers with them, some people could study even while travelling home. Although computers are a great technological invention for people all around the world, they might have few disa...

Are student organizations beneficial for students?

Are student organizations beneficial for students? Student organizations are always been quite popular among students. There are lots of benefits participating in the organizations, but some drawbacks as well. It is clear that student organizations are beneficial for students. Firstly, it helps students to find out their interests, which helps them in the future, when they are choosing suitable profession. It is always better when you already have some imagination of the job. In addition, organizations give new skills and knowledge. Secondly, it connects people with same interests, which leads to a more active social life. It seems that right connections are even more important, when it comes to finding a job, than education. Another relevant point is that nowadays you have to know how to work in a group and student organizations are excellent places to practise it. It must also be noted that good ideas come more easily in a group. I...

Essee What does being free mean?

What does "being free" mean? Freedom plays an important role in our everyday life. It is hard to understand what "being free" mean as every person has his own view on it, which depends on our lifestyle and upbringings. There are a lot of kinds of freedom in the modern world. It can affect on people`s life positively as well as may cause different problems. To begin with, there are certain arguments in favour of being free. Firstly, people in developed countries have a freedom of speech. As a result, democratic policy in such regions offers a great opportunity to citizens to have their opinions heard and be considered. Moreover, some people suggest that being free mean material independence. If a man provide himself (materially), he is able to act as he wants to do it. Computerised world – a better or a worse place to live in ?

Computerised world – a better or a worse place to live in ? Although computers are said to be one of the most successful inventions there are many people who do not totally agree with that saying. Computers are able to do everything that make our life easier, but why are there still so many different opinions about ones' usefulness? The positive side of having computers in our life is how much it actually changes our life and makes it easier. There are no problems, I mean literally no problems that computers could not do. Computers are used to find information, read news, study, and some even play computer games. But to be exact, computer is not only that small box that stays under our desks or the lap-tops that are well known today. Computers are everything automatic that surround us, for example nowadays there are no cars made without computerised parts. Even shopping would not be even close to like it is now if we would not have al...

Marxism  Why to be for Marxism? 1. Belief that a working labour could be seen as joy if a workers sees themselves in the objects they have created. 2. Against exploitation of workers which basically means that workers labour is resold at a higher price than he gets paid for it. 3. Classless society which means that everyone is equal in a basic sense as a member of the tribe and the different functional assignments of the primitive mode of production, howsoever rigid and stratified they might be, did not and could not, simply because of the numbers, produce a class society as such.  Why to be against Marxism? 1. Marxism removes incentive, with the slogan “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” which implies that you should only get what you need, regardless of productivity or skill, which discourages people from working hard, forces production to fall, which red...

Sissejuhatus Siinkohal keskendume uue meedia ühele osale, täpsemalt suhtlusportaalidele ja sotsiaalvõrgustikele ning sellele, milliseid võimalusi need inimestele pakuvad, miks on nad olnud juba algusaegadest võrdlemisi populaarsed ning millised positiivsed küljed ning probleemid nendega paratamatult kaasnevad. Keskendume just neile, kuna need on üldotstarbelised ning pakuvad vägagi erinevaid meelelahutus- ja sotsialiseerumisvõimalusi väga laial vanuseskaalal inimestele Euroopa noortest kasutab internetti kolm neljandikku. Enamkasutatavad online-võimalused mida noored kasutavad, saab jagada neljaks: haridus (õppimine ja digitaliseeritud kirjandus), osalus (kodanlik seotus), loovus (sealhulgas enesepresentatsioon) ning identiteet ja sotsiaalsed sidemed [1]. Tulenevalt uute võimaluste mitmekesisusest, veedavad noored internetikeskkonnas aega rohkem kui kunagi varem [2]. Ajalugu Esimene äratuntav sotsiaalvõrgustik seati üles 1997. aastal....

Emil Durkheim

E.Durkheim Struktuurfunktsionalismi olemus Struktuur-funktsionalismi rajajaks peetakse Prantsuse sotsioloogi Emilié Durkheimi (1858 1917). Raamatuga The Rules of Sociological Method tõi Durkheim välja sotsioloogilise subjekti olemuse ja sotsioloogilise uurimuse sammud. Sotsioloogilise subjekti all mõtles Durkheim indiviidist väljaspool paiknevaid olusid, mis mõjutavad üldiste käitumisreeglitena indiviidi sisemisi piire (Morrison 2006: 185). Seega võtsid struktuurfunktsionalismi metodoloogilised ideed ja nende uurimuslikud vaated fookusesse kriminogeensete hälvete ning ebakõlade otsimise ühiskonna regionaalsetes, kultuurilistes ja demograafilistes struktuurides (Mitendorf 2004: 13). Sotsiaalsed faktid Durkheim laiendas mõistet sotsiaalsed faktid (social facts) e kollektiivne kujutlus ja defineeris mõiste kui välimise sundluse (external coercion) võim indiviidi üle ning kindlate sanktsioonide olemasolu indiviidi püüdluste suhtes seda ...

A Class Divided

Should mercy killing be punished? Mercy killing, also known as euthanasia, refers to the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering. This type of killing is legal in some countries, but should it be punished instead? Although, it is still a type of killing, it is for a good cause. There are people who suffer and want to rather die than to endure agonies, euthanasia is an answer for them. Thus, mercy killing is very humane and reasonable thing to do and does not deserve punishment. The negative aspect of euthanasia is that it is still a form of killing. One should not be in judge over others life, even when it is for a good cause. The fact that euthanasia could be misused is not less important. In conclusion, although mercy killing is a form of taking someone’s life, it should not be punishable when it is for greater good. Is the purpose of la...

Do you consider yourself more functionalist or more conflict theorist?

Do you consider yourself more functionalist or more conflict theorist? Please explain why? Functionalism and conflict theory are very different views of society, but they are not exactly opposites. Both have arguments, that make people think about the society they live in and both have theorists who critize each other. In my opinion, none of the theories are completely wrong but I do tend to agree with people on the conflict theory side. Firstly, functionalism ignores inequality and focuses too much on the positive functions in society. For example racism, functionalists will say that it must be imporant in order to exist as long as it has but in my opinion that sounds quite doubtful. The most problematic part about racism is above all the tension and conflict which comes with it. Seems to me, that functionalists ignore the negative sides which society has on people. Secondly, I agree ...
