Tallinn English College CANADA Report Karin Kristen Tapupere 8.b Instructor: Tiiu Martma Intro: Canada is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area and its common border with the United States to the south and northwest is the longest in the world. The land occupied by Canada was inhabited for millennia by various groups of Aboriginal people. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French expeditions explored, and later settled along, the Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. It is a bilingual and mult...
English literature is one of the oldest literatures in Europe; dates back to the 6th century AD. Oral literature, i.e. not written down, spread from person to person. In 449 AD Anglo-‐Saxon tribes invaded England – beginning of the Anglo-‐Saxon period in English literature. The first form of literature was folklore, carried by scops and gleemen, who sang in alliterative verse (a kind of simple poetry). Prose developed much later. The first form of recorded English literature was the epic Beowulf, which was produced sometime near the end of the 7th and beginning of the 8th century. It has no ...

Australia Australia is the only country in the world that covers an entire continent, yet also the smallest and the driest of all the continents. It's almost the same size as continental USA, being the sixth largest country in the world. It's also the oldest some of the rocks are more than 3,000 million years old. Australia is often called `Down Under', because it lies in the Southern Hemisphere. As a result, its seasons are the opposite of ours. Australia, Tasmania and a number of smaller islands form the Commonwealth of Australia. Because of the country's great size, the climate in Australia ranges from tropical regions of the Northern Territory to the cool temperate conditions in the southeast and Tasmania, where it often snows in winter. In the north, half the year is `wet' and half is `dry'. From November to April heavy rain fills the rivers and makes enormous lakes where thousands of birds come for the summer. From May to Octobe...
Britain History Pre-Norman Britain The Iberians brought their metal-working skills and the first real civilization to Britain in the third millennium B.C and were overrun by various Celtic invasions that began in the 8th century. The Celts introduced their tribal organization and an early form of agriculture before they were forced westward by the Roman invasion. Forms of Celtic language are still spoken in Britain. Romans (with Julius Caesar in the head of them) first tried to occupy Britain in 55 B.C., but there was a rebellion in Gaul so they had to leave to fight against it. Next time they came in 43 A.D. and their leader was Emperor Claudius. Romans brought a lot with them. Their brought paved roads, the sites of important cities, the seeds of Christianity, the Roman law, Roman baths, language and advanced civilization. They also built Hadrian's Wall in 122 A.D. Romans occupied...
2. These two chapters highlight the kinds of commentary Swift makes throughout the novel. By describing a society that chooses its highest officials with silly competitions like seeing who can jump the highest on a tightrope, Swift is poking fun at the way officials are chosen in England. He is also commenting on the disturbing trend of politicians who are willing to do whatever it takes to gain favour in the courtincluding humiliating themselves. The danger of ambition is also figured here; jumping badly can lead to death. Having Gulliver stand with his legs apart so that the Lilliputian armies can walk through is also a ridiculous idea. It is a comment on the pomp and circumstance of English armies. To Swift it seems that armies are often more concerned with looking impressive than with being impressive. This scene might also be an allusion to the Colossus of Rhodes, described in Julius Caesar by Shakespeare as a largerthanlife ...
History exam *Stonehenge - is a monument located in England. It is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world and is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. The surrounding circular, earth bank and ditch, have been dated to about 3100 BC. Stonehenge was produced by a culture with no written language. Many aspects of Stonehenge remain subject to debate. There is little or no direct evidence for the construction techniques used by the Stonehenge builders. *The Celts in Britain and their legacy The Cets lived in Britain in The Iron Age. They were warring tribes who were battleful amongst themselves as well as inter-tribal war. They were not centrally governed. The Celts brought iron working, iron ploughs and metal swords, horses, wheels and chariots - all these things gave them an instant superiority over the native tribes. The Celts built a number ...

The City of London History The City of London occupies one square mile in the middle of the capital. It once made up the entire town of London, surrounded by the wall first built by the Romans. The Roman Londinium grew up on the northern side of the "London Bridge" in the past. Products such as olive oil, wines and fruit were brought by ships from different parts of the Roman Empire and unloaded onto wooden quays along the river. In AD 61 the native Celtic Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against The Romans. They burnt Londinium to the ground but Roman armies eventually defeated Boudicca. The city was rebuilt and was gradually surrounded with a wall of stone and brick which lasted for many centuries. During the archeological excavations in 1954 the Roman Temple of Mithras was revealed. It was a pagan temple dedicated to the Persian Sun-god. The Temple was later reconstructed only a short way...

British history Roman Britain Roman Britain was those parts of the island of Great Britain controlled by the Roman Empire between 43 and about 410. The Romans referred to their province as Britannia. Prior to the Roman invasion, Iron Age Britain already had cultural and economic links with Continental Europe, but the invaders introduced new developments in agriculture, urbanization, industry and architecture, leaving a legacy that is still apparent today. Historical records beyond the initial invasion are sparse, although many Roman historians mention the province in passing. Most of the knowledge of the period stems from archaeological investigations and especially epigraphic evidence. The invasion force in AD 43 was led by Aulus Plautius. It is not known how many Roman legions were sent; only one legion, the II Augusta, commanded by the future emperor Vespasian, ...

ENGLISH LITERATURE Ancient Britain Lived on the British Isles in the 1st millenium. They most probably came from Eastern Europe and belonged to the Celtic race and also spoke Celtic. They were primitive hunters- gatherers, farmers. Some Celtic words are still used in modern English, however they are used mostly in place names. For example: · avon river · cumb valley · ford shallow place in the river Ancient Britons had their own religion and priests or druids and temples. In the year 55 BC Britain became a Roman province. Romans were highly developed and had their own language latin, which has also greatly influenced English. The military occupation of the Isles ended in 410 AD. The Romans eventually brought Christianity to Britain. Hadrian's wall on the border of Scotland and England. It began constru...

The Saxons & Vikings Fragmentary knowledge of England in the 5th & 6th centuries comes from the British writer Gildas, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, saints' lives, poetry, archaelogical findings and place- name studies. British landlords ruled small, unstable kingdoms and continued some Roman traditions of governance. In the mid-5th cent, Vertigern, a British leader, hired Germanic mercenaries to help defend against peoples of the north (Picts & Scots). In the end they revolted & the process of invasion and settlement began. The first Saxon ,,kings" were Hengist & Horsa in Kent, Aelle in Sussex, Cerdic / Cynric in Wessex. So the first ,,English" became mainly from Northern Germany & Denmark. The resistance of the Celts was long. They were free at the time, not like other Roman provinces on the Continent. Around 500, the Britons seem to have won several victories. One of their leaders was Ambrosius Aurelianus and one of...

Established church The Church of England is the established church, which means that: 1.)the Monarch is the Supreme Governor of the church, 2.)the Church performs a number of official functions, 3.)Church and State are linked. To disestablish Disestablishmentarianism refers to campaigns to sever links between church and state, particularly in relation to the Church of England as an established church. It was initially a movement in the United Kingdom in the 18th century. The established churches in Wales and Ireland could not count on even nominal adherence by a majority of the population of those countries. In Ireland, the predominantly Roman Catholic population campaigned against the position of the established Anglican Church of Ireland - eventually disestablished in Ireland from 1 January 1871. A broad church The Church of England is a broad church, representing a wide spectrum of theological thought and practice ...

,,Jumalaema kirik Pariisis" Victor Hugo See prantsuse kirjaniku tuntud romaan räägib mitme tegelase elust 15. sajandi Pariisis. Oskuslikult on vahele põimitud peatükid, mis käsitlevad Pariisi arhitektuuri. Jutustuse peategelasteks on noor poeet Pierre Gringoire, ülemdiakon Claude Frollo, kellalööja Quasimodo ja ilus mustlasneiu Esmeralda, kes ühendab tegelased jutustuseks. Vähesel määral on mainitud kuulsaid tolle aja inimesi. Tegelased on väga erinevad: Claude Frollo on paheline isiksus. Jutustuses jääb kõlama Claude Frollo moto:" Kui ei saa mina teda, ei pea teda keegi saama." Seevastu Quasimodo, poolenisti valmis, nagu ta ise ütleb, on läbinisti hea. Olles kirikus varjul, ei ole ta näinud inimeste viha ja silmakirjalikkust. Kuigi loodus pole temaga helde olnud, suudab ta rõõmu leida sealt, kust keegi teine seda otsidagi ei oska. Quasimododoga peaaegu üh...

1 The Medium Is the Message In a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact,, the medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium-that is, of any extension of ourselves-result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology. Thus, with automation, for example, the new patterns of human association tend to eliminate jobs, it is true. That is the negative result. Positively, automation creates roles for people, which is to say depth of involvement in their work and human association that our preceding mechanical technology had destroyed. Many people would be disposed to say that it was not the machine, but what one did with the machine, that was its meaning or message. In terms of the ...

Euroopa ideede ajalugu Tarkust jagas Pärtel Piirimäe Metodoloogilised küsimused 1. Tekstuaalne ja kontekstuaalne meetod ideedeajaloo uurimisel Tekstuaalse uurimismeetodi juhtfiguuriks oli Arthur Lovejoy teosega 'The Great Chain of Being'(1936). Selle lähenemise põhiteesideks on: · Ajalugu uurib inimest · Ideed on tsüklilised, puudub progress · Eksisteerivad universaalsed probleemid ning ajatud ideed · On olemas nn `idee-ühikud' (unit-ideas), mis on ideoloogiate ehituskivideks · Ajaloos on suurte mõtlejate kanooniline rida; uurida tuleb just nende teoseid · Autoreid endid pole vaja uurida: väidete tähendus selgub tekstist. Kontekstuaalse uurimismeetodi esindajateks on Cambridge'i koolkond (Quentin Skinner jt). Nemad väidavad, et tekstuaalse meetodi puhul on välja jäetud kaks olulist aspekti: esiteks peame mõistma autori kavatsust, mitte ü...

1 Mis on tarbimissotsioloogia? 1. Sellele vaatamata on enamus tarbimiskultu...

Kuulsaim agoraa on 1931. aasta väljakaevamistel põhjalikult läbiuuritud akropolise lähedal asuv Ateena agoraa. Plato...
Vabakirikud, usuvabadus ja ühiskond: Sissejuhatus poliitilisse filosoofiasse * A. Kilp * KUS 2010 Sissejuhatus poliitilisse filosoofiasse Mõned mõisted Fileo sofia on ,,tarkusearmastus". Tarkus on teatud liiki teadmine. Kui antiikajal hakati mõtisklema maailma üle, siis nimetatigi seda teadmiste otsingut ,,filosoofiaks". Filosoofia abil püütakse niisiis saada teadmisi ehk tarkust maailma, inimese ja tema elu eesmärkide kohta. Filosoofia käsitlusobjektiks on seetõttu just igapäevaelu. Filosoofia tegeleb küsimustega, kuidas me seda maailma tunnetame ja mida me oleme suutelised sellest teadma rõhuasetusega ,,kuidas me mõtleme", mitte aga ,,mida me teame". Osadele meie jaok...
Ettevalmistavad küsimused eksamiks: 1) Millisele neljale küsimusele peavad vastama kõik poliitfilosoofilised käsitlused. Tooge igast küsimuste valdkonnast ka näiteid. 2) Miks tekkis poliitiline filosoofia just antiik-Kreekas? 3) Millised olid antiik-Kreeka poliitilised ideaalid? 4) Milline on Platoni nägemus parimast võimalikust riigist teoses "Seadused"? · Poliitilise filosoofia alase teaduse tegemisest Kui soovite kirjutada bakalaureuse või magistritööd poliitfilosoofia alal, on soovitav, et teema kattuks vähem või rohkem võrdleva poliitika või rahvusvaheliste suhete temaatikaga. Nt rahvusvaheliste suhete teooriate vallast, kus Machiavelli, Hobbes, Kant ja paljud teised on olulised. o Kuna ei politoloogia ega avaliku halduse õppekavades pole poliitilise filosoofia õppekava, tuleb end nendes teemades täiendada iseseisvalt või õppekavade väliselt ning ikkagi sobituda olema...
Some of the things you will learn in THE CODEBREAKERS • How secret Japanese messages were decoded in Washington hours before Pearl Harbor. • How German codebreakers helped usher in the Russian Revolution. • How John F. Kennedy escaped capture in the Pacific because the Japanese failed to solve a simple cipher. • How codebreaking determined a presidential election, convicted an underworld syndicate head, won the battle of Midway, led to cruel Allied defeats in North Africa, and broke up a vast Nazi spy ring. • How one American became the world's most famous codebreaker, and another became the world's greatest. • How codes and codebreakers operate today within the secret agencies of the U.S. and Russia. • And incredibly much more.
