The Picture of Dorian Gray / Dorian Gray portree

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) Introduction The Picture of Dorian Gray came out in 1891, in Estonian 1929. It is the only published novel written by Oscar Wilde and also considered as a classic gothic horror fiction with a little bit of philosophy in it. I decided to read this book in Estonian, because I have two books in this language available at home. The book I read was published by Eesti Päevaleht in 2007 and it consists of 184 pages. The story is centred on Dorian Gray, a young man of great beauty and on his portrait, painted by Basil Hallward. From my point of view, I think that Wilde wanted to teach us a lesson about being too conceited and having such a high opinion of oneself. It is well known that nobody gets away without punishment. The Body The book tells the story of how a friend of Dorian, the artist Basil...

E.M.Remarque "Läänerindel Muutuseta"

Paul is the protagonist and narrator of the novel. He is, at heart, a kind, compas-sionate, and sensitive young man, but the brutal expe-rience of warfare teaches him to detach himself from his feelings. His account of the war is a bitter invective against sentimental, romantic ideals of warfare. Read an in-depth analysis of Paul Bäumer. Stanislaus Katczinsky - A soldier belonging to Paul's company and Paul's best friend in the army. Kat, as he is known, is forty years old at the beginning of the novel and has a family at home. He is a resourceful, inventive man and always finds food, clothing, and blankets whenever he and his friends need them. George Byroni elu ja looming

Ta sai tuntuks mitte ainult oma luuletustega, vaid ka ekstsentrilise eluviisi, armuafääride, võlgade ja intsestisüüdistuste tõttu. Aastail 18011805 õppis Byron Harrow' koolis, seejärel Cambridge'i ülikooli Trinity College'is. 1809. aastal asus ta reisile Vahemeremaadesse, sest Napoleoni sõdade tõttu oli suures osas Euroopast reisimine raskendatud.

The value of things VS the price of things

The value of things VS the price of things A value can be much more than simple numbers, a value can show what memories, connections and contact people have with a thing. But what exactly is a thing? Well a thing is something lifeless, an item for a certain purpose, it’s something for certain use. When we take a look at the word named „price“, what does it mean? A price usually is seen as a number, as how much something costs. Things can be „overpriced“, but never „overvalued“. An item of high value could have no price, but at the same time an high priced item, could have no value. It’s this way because people see differently, people have different memories and emotions to remember. But as in this world today, price matters. People can’t afford anything, price means something as well, it can show how wealthy you are, how much someone can mean to you. Price is just a number, it shows how much something pays...

A film review

It is based on the relations between violent leader Anders, his sacrifice Joosep, a new student Kaspar, his popular girl-friend Thea and other classmates. The film talks about the violence in schools what is a very actual theme in Estonia. There comes a new student Kaspar to a city school and quickly becomes popular because he is communicative and talented. He also gets a popular girl-friend, but it all doesn't like to the class leader Anders. There is also a whipping boy Joosep. Kaspar is going to protect him what changes a new classmate to a foeman of Anders. Developing the film uncovers schools violence, relations with parents, pedagogues apathy, punishment and retribution. For me, the film was really galvanic and thought-provoking. In real Estonia it is not that cruel as it is in film, but it may be possible in somewhere American schools. I think the film is too uncharitable a...

Anglo - Saxon

The Anglo-Saxons built small towns near their centres of agriculture. In each town, a main hall was in the centre. The architectural character of Anglo- Saxon ecclesiastical buildings range from Coptic influenced architecture in the early period; basilica influenced Romanesque architecture; and in the later Anglo-Saxon period, an architecture characterised by pilaster-strips, blank arcading, baluster shafts and triangular headed openings. There are few remains of Anglo-Saxon architecture, with no secular work remaining above ground. All surviving churches, except one timber church, are built of stone or brick and in some cases show evidence of re-used Roman work. Art Anglo-Saxon art is mainly known today through illuminated manuscripts. Although they are the most well known to have survived. Perhaps the bes...
