Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Portsmouth. His father was a clerk who earned relatively little money. In 1822 his family moved to London and Charles's education was interrupted by need to take poorly-paid work in factory because his father got into debt and imprisoned. In 1823 he became solicitor's clerk and a year later a newspaper reporter. His first short story was published in 1825 anonymously without payment and later he began writing under pen name `Boz' and described conditions of poverty in England. Ten years later he married Catherine Hogarth with whom he had 10 children. In 1842 he visited USA where he was treated as a celebrity because he was very well-known there.
