Joseph Mallord William Turner and "The Fighting 'Temeraire'

landscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker. He has laid the foundation for Impressionism. Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light". One of his main themes was the helplessness and smallness of man against the destructive forces of nature. One of my favourite paintings is "The Fighting `Temeraire' tugged to her Last Berth to be broken up. Turner was in his sixties when he painted this painting. It shows his mastery of painting techniques to suggest sea and sky. It depicts one of the last second-rate ships of the line which played a distinguished role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Turner's main concern was to evoke a sense of loss, rather than to give an exact recording of the event. The painting "The Fighting 'Temeraire' " was painted in the years 1838-1839. The painting technique is oil, 91 x 122 cm. The painting type is landscape

Konrad Mägi in English

Konrad Mägi Konrad Mägi was born at Hellenurme, Tartu on November 1, 1878. He was an Estonian landscape painter and a teacher. He has also participated in the foundation of the art association and school "Pallas". He was one of the most colour-sensitive Estonian painters of the first decades of the 20th century, and Mägi's works on motives of the island of Saaremaa are the first modern Estonian nature paintings. As well as nature paintings, he also painted flowers and portraits. He always used sky in his paintings. His favourite colour was cadmium red, which is quite light and warm red tone. Mägi received his elementary art education from the drawing courses of the German Artisans' Society of Tartu. Mägi continued his art education in Saint Petersburg, where he was expelled due to his participation in revolutionary activities. Then he spent the summer on the islands of Åland in Finland and after that moved on to Paris. There Mägi

Lady with ermine

Lady with an Ermine Lady with an Ermine is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, around 14891490. The painting is one of only four female portraits Leonardo painted. Despite sustaining much damage the surface is much rubbed, the background was lightly overpainted with unmodulated black, the upper left corner has been broken and repaired, a transparent veil on the model's head was turned into an extravagant hairdo and several fingers were grossly retouched - it is nonetheless in better condition than many of Leonardo's other paintings. The sitter's hair is confined tightly to her head under a very fine net veil with a woven border of gold-wound threads

means of two horizontal walkways which are designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour dates from 1977 when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Originally it was painted a chocolate brown colour. The Tower Bridge in London remains one of the more popular tourist attractions in the city. In 1982, the upper walkway of the Tower Bridge London was opened to the public as an exhibition. The walkway was paved, the enclosed area lined with pictures and information about the Tower Bridge History. Views from atop the Tower

Raphael Sanzio

Raphael (April 6 or March 28, 1483 April 6, 1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop. Most of his work remains especially in the Vatican. He received his first training from his father, Giovanni Santi, who was a poet and a painter. After that he became a student and assistant of the painter Perugino. Raphael imitated his master closely and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish which works are painted by Raphael. His work at that period is Marriage of the Virgin (1.) Mary receives a ring from Joseph. In contrast to the calm figures of the main group, there are one man, who is shown in motion (liikuvuses). He is breaking a dead stick over his knee, because he fail to win Mary's heart. Joseph's stick, on the other hand, has blossomed. Raphael moved to Florence, where he studied the methods of representing the play of light and shade, anatomy, and dramatic action

Due to the fact that Dorian is very handsome, actually even heavenly beautiful young man, a friend of Basil, a cynical aristocrat Lord Henry Wotton (Harry) finds great intrest in Dorian. Lord Henry Wotton wants to buy the picture, and moreover, he wants to meet the boy in the picture himself. The Picture of Dorian Gray

Movie was well done. None too big cuts. All good quotations were present but it felt to me that in some places they were a bit too forced (crammed together). Alltogether I liked the movie and it gave away the meaning of the book pretty well. The storyteller explaines in the beginning that Harry likes to play with people. Not good. The novel has no reference to Dorian being painted with an Egyptian goddess shaped like a cat who could grant his wish, as the film has. Appears throughout the whole movie. Girls signs the painting- Glaidis, Basils niece. Dorian stole her heart. Also important in later recognising the corpse. In Wilde's original, Sybil Vane is a Shakespearean actress whom Dorian observes playing Juliet, rather than the gifted dance-hall singer seen in this film. This necessitates altering Dorian's motive for breaking up with her

Easter in England

But the story has a very happy ending, because Jesus came back to life and visited his friends and followers once more. He did not die at all, but went back up to Heaven to be with God, his father. The Traditional Egg Gift The first eggs given at Easter were birds eggs. These eggs were painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift As chocolate became more wide spread in the 20th Century, a chocolate version of the traditional painted egg was developed. The size of the chocolate egg has grown over the years and is now more likely to be the size of an ostrich egg rather than a small birds egg. Special Food Boiled eggs are traditionally served at breakfast, then Easter cards and gifts may be exchanged Roast lamb, which is the main dish at Jewish Passover, is the traditional meat for the main meal on Easter Day. It is served with mint sauce and vegetables.

The Renaissance

Renaissance. Fifteenth century Florence was an exciting place to be. At that time the city was independent and had a population of about 60,000 . Leonardo da Vinci (1452--1519) was one of the most famous people of the Renaissance period. He was not only a famous painter but also studied science, designed machines and drew plans for new inventions. Young Leonardo grew up near Florence and studied painting with the great painters of the city. After a few years in Milan, where he painted for a famous duke ,he came back to Florence and painted a new hall for the city council. In his paintings da Vinci experimented with many techniques that artists hadn't used before. For example, he started to use perspective in his paintings. He put small objects in the background to make them appear far away. He also experimented with light, shade and colours. Da Vinci finished painting The Last Supper in 1497. The painting shows the last meal of Jesus Christ and his 12 apostles

The Picture of Dorian Gray / Dorian Gray portree

He is an ideal of beauty and this makes him arrogant. He thinks that if he is beautiful, everything is allowed to him. He kills one of his friends Basil, a conventially minded and talented painter and does not even feel guilty after that. The third quite important charachter there is Lord Henry, a friend of both Dorian and Basil. He is a charming talker and a brilliant intellect. The climax occurs when Dorian kills Basil. He thinks that since Basil painted the portrait, that ruined Dorian's life, the painter should be punished for this. Evaluation I think that the writing was effective and definately the author achieved his purpose. Many people told me before reading this book, that they have never read a better book in their life. After first couple of chapters I thought we just have different tastes in books, as I usually do have, but the book was quite interesting in the end.

For example: love-cupids, fear -demons, and many other characteristics. Individuality- it was all about loosing formal constraints, giving way to artists to show their individual ideas and emotions. Heroism- Heroism didn't just mean the supernatural. Many people, like Beethoven, believed that the common man could be heroes. Artists painted this idea during the Romantic Age. Artists: J.M.W. The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

Here he studied the classics, in particular developing an interest in the Greek philosophers and the Hellenistic view of life. He also really cherished his youth, which probably was the inspiration for the book The picture of Dorian Gray. "To get back my youth I would do anything in the world, except take exercise, get up early or be respectable." - Oscar Wilde The picture of Dorian Gray This book talks about a young man called Dorian Gray, who doesn't age. Instead a portrait, which is painted of him shows all the changes Dorian is going trough. That is somehow making Dorian evil, he starts enjoying life at first, but later on his actions take a darker turn. All of that starts when Dorian meets lord Henry Wotton, who tells him that one should cherish his youth, because youth is only temporary. Lord Henry himself is a fine example of an upperclass gentleman. His day mostly consist of elegant dinners with the London's elite and attending shows, operas etc

Jacques Louis David ja Prantsuse Revolutsioon

Revolution. (Friedlander, 1952, p.7) Analysis To begin with, the 18th century was all about the rebirth of classicism and antiquity. Surprisingly, it was very hard for David to find examples from Antique, because they almost did not exist. Only some paintings that were meant for decor in Pompeii were preserved. That is why he went to Pompeii for an expedition, in order to best represent the classicism requirements. David painted carefully all the contours and forms of the human body, because he started to imitate Antique sculptures. Moreover, David and Classicism in general were not limited to only mimicking the external form of the Antique, but also the plot was often borrowed from the Antique literature or mythology. Best suited were the subjects that glorified bravery, loyalty, love for the fatherland and other virtues. Paintings were supposed to be instructive and fight against vices. (Leesi, 2003, p.115)

Léger's experiences in World War I had a significant effect on his work. Mobilized in August 1914 for service in the French Army, he spent two years at the front in Argonne. He produced many sketches of artillery pieces, airplanes, and fellow soldiers while in the trenches, and painted Soldier with a Pipe (1916) while on furlough. In September 1916 he almost died after a mustard gas attack by the German troops at Verdun. During a period of convalescence in Villepinte he painted The Card Players (1917), a canvas whose robot-like, monstrous figures reflect the ambivalence of his experience of war. As he explained: ...I was stunned by the sight of the breech of a 75 millimeter in the sunlight. It was the magic of light on the white metal. That's all it took for me to forget the abstract art of 1912-1913. The crudeness, variety, humor, and downright perfection of certain men around me, their

Easter traditions in Estonia

Easter traditions in Estonia Easter traditions are rather young in Estonia. Our grandmothers took the eastern habits from BalticGermans without taking over the meanings painted eggs just seemed so beautiful. So for us, their grandchildren, painting eggs has no connection with religion traditions. It is more like a way of expressing one's creativity. We use different colors and techniques: painting with herbs, watercolors, markers, special colors etc. There aren't any certain patterns to use, everyone can do it any way they like. We also give colored eggs as presents to friends and children are cracking the eggs.

John Constable

Constable is famous for his landscapes, which are mostly of the Suffolk countryside, where he was born and lived. He made many open-air sketches, using these as a basis for his large exhibition paintings, which were worked up in the studio. His pictures are extremely popular today, but they were not particularly well received in England during his lifetime. He did, however, have considerable success in Paris. Sailsbury Cathedral from the Meadows was painted by John Consatble in 1831, one year after his wife's death. He later added nine lines from ,,The Seasons" by 18th Century poet James Thomson that reveal the painting's meaning: That the rainbow is a symbol of hope after a storm that follows on the death of the young Amelia in the arms of her lover Celadon. I like the name of the painting Sailsbury Cathedral from the Meadows, because there is everything very clearly depicted in the painting is the perception and the message. In front

The look is pure subservience. The white-painted face with lips like a red gash is framed by a dead straight curtain of dark gloss hair. It is a stark image of Geisha. This is Madonna the woman who sums up feisty independence in the post-feminist era posing as a silent submissive geisha girl. She is the mistress of reinvention. From the moment the Detroit convent girl hitch-hiked to New York 20 years ago with a burning ambition to be the world's most famous woman, she has shown an amazing talent for transformation. It is no coincidence that Steven Spielberg is looking for a woman of his adaption of Arthur Golden's best-selling novel, Memories of a Geisha. And if her new Geisha look is a part of Madonna's campaign to secure the part, who can blame her? Madonna has always been a brilliant consolidator of trends, picking up on an existing look and making it her own. When she first bounced into the charts, it was a trashy punk. The furs a...

Although he knew he could find his clothes at a less expensive price, he made it a point to look stylish in his expensive threads -- and he has succeeded at looking cool in his attire since the age of 12. Lauren studied business at City College in Manhattan, and dropped out short of receiving his business degree. While working at A

Harry was a friend of Basil's, the artist who painted Dorian's picture, and he had quite peculiar ideas of life. He told Dorian that youth is the most relevant in life and that everyone should enjoy it. A letter to a friend describing a house for rent

Dear Michelle, Thank you for your letter, it was very nice to hear some good news from you. We're very glad that you are happy with the choice you made, by starting a new life abroad, with having many interesting chances there. You also wrote that you miss all of your friends and relatives, who you had to say goodbye to... Thinking of that, I have a marvellous suggestion for you! I know you've always wanted to have a nice summer cottage and why not to have it, here, in Estonia? I've found a lovely summerhouse for you! I also remember how much you adored these cute little hills we have in Estonia, so this lovely cottage is also on the foot of one and it's surrounded by a beautiful nature, you like to take photos of, too. It's located in the South-Estonia, near the Võru. This house has a view on a lake, where you can ride a boat and fish. It's surrounded by a little garden, in front of the house there are some beautiful roses...

Skulptuur “Kristallmets”

KRISTALLMETS Skulptuur “Kristallmets” kujutab puidust modelleeritud kristalle, mille tipud on värviliseks maalitud.
