Are men better directors than women ?

But does that necessarily mean that women are not suitable for such responsible, effort and leadership demanding jobs? I do not think so. First of all, I would like to say that this tradition is coming not only from history, but from evolution. In nature, masculine representatives of most species are stronger, more agile and aggressive than feminine representatives, because their biological function is to be the main breadwinners and defenders of their families, while females' main functions are to distribute that bread within the family, raise, feed and look after the progeny. Of course there are exceptions like lions (lionesses do hunting which ensures food for their families), seahorses (males bear the eggs) and some others, but in general law of nature is such. So it is not surprising that this law applies for the human beings, but we...

Of monsters and men

The band won an annual battle of the bands competition in Iceland in 2010, that was the start of Of monsters and men. The members are co-singer/guitarist Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, co-singer/guitarist Ragnar "Raggi" órhallsson, guitarist Brynjar Leifsson, drummer Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson, and bassist Kristján Páll Kristjánsson. Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (born May 6, 1989) is the lead vocalist and guitarist, along with Ragnar "Raggi" órhallsson, of the Icelandic indie folk band Of Monsters and Men. Before Of Monsters and Men had been established, Nanna had a solo musical project called Songbird and was a video store clerk. The two sing about an epic battle between birds and bees, wolves running with the wind in the dark, and a whale--with a house on his back--who gives people rides across the ocean. Ghosts, mythic kings and magical monsters are...

Men and women in politics

Over the past decade, women have resolved into leadership positions, encouraging the same sex to voice their opinions in voting booths, political debates, and society. Not only in America, but nationwide. Women comprise over 35 percent of the lower house in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Demark; 15 percent or less are seen in parliaments within ten countries . Over the years, women had to protest and fight for this right so that young women today can vote and have a say so in who represents the people of our city, state, and country. A woman's influence in politics has yet to be recognized as a true political voice of women that actually yields power. Perceptions of women and politics from the media, society, men, and even women themselves have shaped women's ability everywhere to participate politically and socially within our society. The Un...

Dead men tell no tales

22.mai 2013.

The statue of Zeus at Olympia

Between 470 and 460 B.C., construction on a new temple was started. The designer was Libon of Elis and The Temple of Zeus was completed in 456 B.C. This temple followed a design used on many large Grecian temples. Though the temple was considered one of the best examples of the Doric design, it was decided that the temple alone was too simple to be worthy of the King of the gods. To remedy this, a statue was commissioned for the inerior – a magnificent statue of Zeus that would become one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The sculptor chosen for this great task was a man named Phidias. He began working on the statue around 440 B.C. When the stature was completed, it barely fitted in the temple. The first archaeological work on the Olympia site was done by group of French Scientists in 1829.They were able to locate the outlines of the temple and found the fragments of the sculpture. The fragments ate still on display today at the Louvre. The next expedition, that came form Germany in 1875, worked at Olympia for five summers. Over that period they were able to map out most of the buildings there. They discovered more fragments of the temple’s sculpture, and located the remains of the pool in the floor that contained the oil fot the statue. In the 1950’s an excavation uncovered the workshop of Phidias which covered beneath an early Christian Church.Archaeologists found sculptor’s tools, a pit fot casting bronze, clay moulds, modelling plaster and even a portion of the elephants tusks which had supplied the ivory for the statue. Today, the stadium at the site has been restored. Little is left of the temple though, except a few columns.Of the statue, which was perhaps the most wonderful work at Olympia, all is gone by now. · There is an end to things no matter how much we want to hold into them. · Women are stronger than men, because they can walk in a 12 cm stilettos without...

Tess - Guilty or not ?

The book is about young woman's misfortunes. Those misfortunes lead to many desperate actions but Tess is not quilty of them. The first misadventure which leads to others is when Tess has to go to the market. Tess accidentally kills the horse. She feels guilt but in my opinion it was not her fault because after all it was her father's task not Tess'. Her father could not go because he was too drunk. However, Tess feels like she is responsible and that she has to do something good for her family. In order to compensate her mistake she goes to work for a rich relative in a bird farm. There happens another awful thing she gets pregnant from her so called cousin Alec D' Urberville. Yet again it is not Tess' fault because her mother has not taught to Tess essential things about life and men. What makes it even worse is that Tess d...

Gender equality in higher positions of companies

Companies should be required to allocate a certain percentage of these positions to women. To what extent do you agree? In the 21st century it is all about gender equality and every individual wants to achieve high level position in their work place. In the past, women, in many societies, had less rights and privileges than men. The statement says that companies should give a certain number of higher positions to women. However, I do not agree with this requirement completely. Giving a certain percent of higher positions to women certainly is an easy solution but in my opinion it will bring even more sexism. It shows that women are somehow weaker, fragile and need help for everything. And this on the other hand, will cause a situation where females will receive less credit for their jobs, even if they do their work really well. Every person is un...

Links between Estonia and English speaking countries

These contacts might be very old. During Hanseatic times the trade on the Baltic Sea was quite active. The links might be even older. Historians have claimed that already during the second Punic war in 218 BC a northern nation called Esths controlled the north south trade of furs. It is most likely that some furs also reached the area of present day England. Even more likely contacts between Estonia and England date back to the beginning of the second millennium AD. It has been widely acknowledged, that Estonians and Danes often combined forces when attacking larger targets. This would mean that Estonians have made frequent and regular raids to the shores of England. Unfortunately there is no written evidence about these contacts. The only possible source of information is the comparison of coins and pottery found at different excavation sites. 20th century Regular documented contacts between Estonia and English speaking countries begun after Estonia gained its independence in 1918. At that time, England with her colonies was the biggest and the strongest sea power in the world. During the First World War England dominated the high seas and the Baltic Sea. So it is quite obvious that after the Bolsheviks gained power in St. Petersburg, The English navy came to aid the newly formed government of Estonia in their war efforts against the Bolshevik invaders. The Royal Navy detachment blocked Bolshevik attempts to land troops behind Estonian lines. British sailors were among those who gave their lives defending Estonia's freedom during the conflict. Some of these men are laid to rest in Tallinn. The aid came not only in the military presence of the war ships, but also in technical, financial and moral support. The technical expertise of the military advisers 5 ...

"Not that he deserves any sympathy. The man's an ass." "Nothing of the kind. A most intelligent young man, as young men go." "Young? Would you call him young? Fifty, I should have said, if a day." On friendship

It comes, like sleep, when you are not thinking about it; and you should be grateful, without any misgiving, when it comes. So no man who knows what friendship is ever gave up a friend because he turns out to be disreputable. His only reason for giving up a friend is that he has ceased to care for him; and, when that happens, he should reproach himself for this mortal poverty of affection, not the friend for having proved unworthy. For it is inhuman presumption to say of any man that he is unworthy of your friendship, just as it is to say of any woman, when you have fallen out of love with her, that she is unworthy of your love. In friendship and in love we are always humble, because we see that a free gift has been given to us; and to lose that humility because we have lost friendship or love is to take a pride in what should shame us. We have our judgments and our penalties as part of the political mechanism that is forced upon us so that we may continue to live; but friendship is not friendship at all unless it teaches us that these are not part of our real life. They have to be; and we pay men, and clothe them in wigs and scarlet, to sit in judgment on other men. So we are tempted to play this game of judgment ourselves, even though no one has paid us to do it. It is only in the warmth of friendship that we see how cold a thing it is to judge and how stupid to take a pleasure in judging; for we recognise this warmth as a positive good, a richness in our natures, while the coldness that sets us judging is a poverty. Just as our criticism of a work of art begins only when we have ceased to experience it, so our criticism of our friends begins only when we have ceased to experience them, when our minds can no longer remain at the height of intim...

Exposing the Human Condition in Antigone

A hero can also mean courage in the face of death. Others may view this type of hero as stupid, or a martyr. Every hero has faults and these faults along with heroic deeds make the man or woman; a hero, heroine. "Antigone" would be considered a hero in the sense of being a martyr. Because of her love for her family Antigone wanted to give her brother a proper burial, and even though he did evil deeds, she respected him. She believed that all of the dead were in a state of equality. When faced with the decision to obey the King or obey her heart, she says on page 23, in lines 86-90: "I will bury him myself. If I die for doing that, good:I will stay with him, brother;and my crime will be devotion." This decision, to bury her brother, was very heroic in that even though she knew death was at stake, she knew where her loyalties lied. On page 39, lines 560-575, Antigone stands up to her uncle and tells...

Carl Lewis

He was born on 1st July 1961 in Birmingham, Alabama, the same country of Jesse Owens for the will of doom: in fact his parents lived there fleetingly owing to their job. Third of five sons, he spent his childhood in Willingboro together with his younger sister Carol, Bill, his dad and Evelyn, his mother. Since his first years of life he could breath the soft and clean air of sport: his father used to train athletes at university and his mother was 6th at 80 m hurdles in the Pan-American games of 1951.He saw the Olympic games of 1968 on TV and could admire Bob Beamon: he was so impressed that after the jump of 8,90 m he went out with a friend to take the length of a limousine in order to realize how far Bob flied! But for the moment Carl was really thin, so thin that the doctor suggested to make him do sports. His education, beyond studies, embraced a lot of fields. He learnt to play musical instruments, to dance, to sing and applied himself to a large variety of sports: football, soccer (he played with his brother Cleveland as a forward!), diving and, obviously, athletics. As he himself tells, he wasn't good at sport. A lot of boys did better at the same age and he was regularly beaten by his sister Carol in the track his parents constructed for them around the garden of their house! Amazingly his father was a friend of Jesse Owens and so Carl grew up under the legend of this man who won four gold medals in the Olympic games of Berlin 1936. Carl begun with long jump and after a competition, at the age of 10, he was awarded by Owens himself. But a sad episode made people worry for his career. When he was 12, after having sung in the chorus of the church, he wen...
