Tower Bridge

· In the second half of the 19th century, increased commercial development in the East End of London led to a requirement for a new river crossing downstream of London Bridge. · Subway Committee was formed in 1876, chaired by Sir Albert Joseph Altman, to find a solution to the river crossing problem. It opened the design of the crossing to public competition. Over 50 designs were submitted. · Jones' engineer, Sir John Wolfe Barry, devised the idea of a bascule bridge 800 feet (244 m) in length with two towers each 213 feet (65 m) high, built on piers. The central span of 200 feet (61 m) between the towers was split into two equal leaves, which could be raised to an angle of 83 degrees to allow river traffic to pass. The leaves, weighing over 1,000 tons each, were balanced to minimize the force required and allow raising in five minutes. · Jones died in 1887 and George D. Stevenson took over the project.

Big Ben

The tower was begun following the disastrous fire which destroyed the old Palace of Westminster in 1834. Charles Barry was given the contract to rebuild the Palace, and his designs included a clock tower. The Tower The clock tower of the Palace of Westminster took 13 years to build, and was completed in 1856. The tower is 316 feet high. The spire that rises above the belfry is built with an iron frame, and it is this frame which supports the weight of the bells. A staircase rises up inside the tower, and a climb is rewarded by excellent views from the belfry level. Several small rooms are built into the lower part of the tower, including a small prison cell. Houses of parliament

All that remained was the chapel crypt, The Jewel Tower and Westminster Hall. It was Lord Melbourne, the Prime Minister, who saved the great hall by arranging for the fire engines to be brought right into the hall and personally supervising the fire fighting operation. The magnificent Gothic Revival masterpiece you see today was built between 1840 and 1888, this was the work of Charles Barry who designed the buildings to blend with nearby Westminster Abbey. The two imposing towers, well known landmarks in London, are the clock tower, named after it's bell called Big Ben, and Victoria tower, on whose flag pole the Union Jack flies when parliament is sitting. Most of the tourists think that Big Ben is the tower, but Big Ben is only a clock, which was built in 1858 to 1859. It is probably named, after Sir Benjamin Hall, the first Commissioner of Works. Big Ben is very heavy. It weights over 13 tons. The clock mechanism, alone, weights about 5 tons

The City on London

Roman armies were recalled from Britain to defend Rome itself. Once they had left Anglo-Saxons invaded and settled in Britain. They were farming people who preffered to live outside towns. For a while London probably lay in ruins, but it eventually developed again, partly because of its position on the river was good for trading. The Tower of London There is more of London's history in the Tower than anywhere else in London. It is the oldest surviving building in the capital. The Tower of London was begun by William the Conqueror in 1078 as a castle and a palace but even before the site had been used by the Romans and Anglo-Saxons. The tower comprises not one, but 20 towers, the oldest, the White Tower, dates back to the 11 th Century. The Roman stone wall, parts of which can still be seen on the territory of the Tower, may have been a small Roman fort near the river. The White Tower, called so on account of the white Caen stone Brought from

The actual inspiration came from Otto Lilienthal who was a German aeronautical engineer. The most evident defect in these hang gliders was that the hand glider could veer out of control at any time, as it had no proper mechanism to support it causing a safety concern. The Wright Brothers tried to invent such a machine that could fully mask all the defects of hang gliders. The first successful flying experience of the airplane lasted a mere 59 seconds. TOOMPEA Toompea (from German Domberg – Cathedral Hill ) is a limestone hill with an area of about 7 hectares in the central part of Tallinn. It towers about 30-40 m above the surrounding areas. According to the legend it´s the tumulus mound over the grave of the national hero Kalev, erected stone by stone in his memory by his grieving wife Linda. It is the birthplace of Tallinn - a place where in 1229 the Knights of the Sword built a fortress instead of the wooden Estonian stronghold. (www.ahdictionary.com). How did it get its name? It is difficult to say when the term submarine sandwich was first used for these types of large sandwiches. Although it is quite obvious that the sandwich got its name because of its long shape that resembles submarines, there are several myths around the origin of the term. The first theory is that at the beginning of World War II a sandwich was specifically created in a restaurant in Scollay Square in Boston to appeal to the mean serving at Charlestown Navy Yard. Because it resembled a submarine for its shape, people began to call them “submarine sandwiches”. According to another version, the sandwich was created during World War II by an Italian shopkeeper named Benedetto Capaldo in New London, CT. When the navy servicemen from the submarine base in the town of Groton across the river began ordering 500 sandwiches a day, the sandwich became irrevocably associated with submarines.

London

London History The Romans AD 43- AD 410 The Romans finally invaded Britain in AD 43 from Kent. The Romans lead by Julius Caesar attempted to invade Britain twice before that in 55 and 54 BC but the invasions were unsuccessful. They made their way to the river Thames and sailed up it. The Romans knew it was important to control a crossing point at the river Thames, so they decided to build a settlement on the north bank. Although small settlements had been built on the banks of the Thames, the Romans were the ones who built the first city. They called their city Londinium. The Roman engineers noticed that the point where the swampy river narrowed would make an ideal crossing point, they built London Bridge. Less than 20 years later the native Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against the Romans in revenge for mistreatment and burnt Londinium to the ground

Indians

LONG BEFORE the white man set foot on American soil, the American Indians, or rather the Native Americans, had been living in America. When the Europeans came here, there were probably about 10 million Indians populating America north of present-day Mexico. And they had been living in America for quite some time. It is believed that the first Native Americans arrived during the last ice-age, approximately 20,000 - 30,000 years ago through a land-bridge across the Bering Sound, from northeastern Siberia into Alaska. The oldest documented Indian cultures in North America are Sandia (15000 BC), Clovis (12000 BC) and Folsom (8000 BC) Although it is believed that the Indians originated in Asia, few if any of them came from India
