Gerunds and infinities

I stopped drinking coffee because I couldn´t sleep.
We stopped to have a coffee on our way into town.
Try: when used with the gerund this means ´make an experiments´- doing the action
may not be successful; when used with the infinitive this means ´make an effort´- the
action may be difficult or impossible to do.
Try drinking a glass of water to stop your hiccoughs.
Try to study for two hours a day even if you are busy.

When these verbs are used with the infinitive they refer to more specific situations,
When they are used with the gerund they refer to more general situations. The
difference in meaning is very slight.
I prefer to go to school by bus.
I can´t bear getting up so early, but I have to.
