Charles Darwin

It was no longer acceptable to say "God did it". Therefor, if evolution was to ever become a science, a rational explanation had to be offered. Such an explanation was proposed by Jean Babtiste Lamarck toward the end of the eighteenth century, and Lamarck became best known for his pre-Darwin theory of evolution. According to Lamarck, the acquired characteristics of the parents could be handed down to their offspring. Suppose, to take the most over used example, that the first generations of giraffe had a neck of ordinary length. Because the lower branches of the trees they fed off were easily striped, these early giraffes stretched out their necks to reach higher branches. In doing so, they caused their offspring to be born with slightly longer necks, until the ultimate result was the giraffe of today. This theory had virtues far beyond the necks of giraffes. Taking this concept to its extreme one would now be under the impression that all that the past European forefathers have

Tundra loomad

These North American reindeer became known as caribou. Although they are called by different names, they are both considered to be a single species. Unlike deer, both the male and female have antlers. The antlers of the male are long, branched and massive, and they are a little flattened at the ends. The antlers of the female are much shorter, simpler and more slender and irregular. Their large, spreading hooves support the animal in snow in the winter and marshy tundra in the summer. Reindeer are also great swimmers and use their feet as paddles. They can also lower their metabolic rate and go into a semi-hibernation when conditions get very harsh. When it looks like there is nothing to eat on the winter tundra, reindeer will scrape the snow away with their wide feet or antlers and eat lichens, dried sedges and small shrubs. In the summer they the will eat

A New Earth

emerged, would become like messengers from another realm, like a bridge between the world of physical forms and the formless. They not only had a scent that was delicate and pleasing to humans, but also brought a fragrance from the realm of spirit. Using the word “enlightenment” in a wider sense than the conventionally accepted one, we could look upon flowers as the enlightenment of plants. Any life-form in any realm – mineral, vegetable, animal, or human – can be said to undergo “enlightenment.” It is, however, an extremely rare occurrence since it is more than an evolutionary progression: It also implies a discontinuity in its development, a leap to an entirely different level of Being and, most important, a lessening of materiality. What could be heavier and more impenetrable than a rock, the densest of all forms? And yet some rocks undergo a change in their molecular

Reasons why human beings are unique

200,000 Japanese people. No other species has ever wielded such power, and no species could. The technology behind the atomic bomb only exists because of a cooperative hive mind: hundreds of scientists and engineers working together. The same unique intelligence and cooperation also underlies more positive advances, such as modern medicine. But is that all that defines us? In recent years, many traits once believed to be uniquely human, from morality to culture, have been found in the animal kingdom (see part one in this two-part series). So, what exactly makes us special? The list might be smaller than it once was, but there are some traits of ours that no other creature on Earth can match. No animal can get close to the devastation humans can cause (Credit: Thinkstock) No animal can get close to the devastation humans can cause (Credit: Thinkstock) Ever since we learned to write, we have documented how special we are. People care more about their privacy and avoid „big brother“ foreshadowing. It is important to know what social media platforms promise and are they really going to keep it. Getting physical

Andra Pant NT-32 GETTING PHYSICAL Tallinn 2012 "Delivery is more important than content." Arch Lustberg, speech trainer According to wellknown social anthropologist Edward T. Hall, 60% of our communication is nonverbal. That means whenever we stand before an audience, our stance, our posture, our facial expressions, our hand gestures, our whole body dynamic communicate more than our actual spoken words. A stiff, immobile speaker is often a boring and usually ineffective speaker as. It is therefore essential to know how to be physically relaxed, which will allow your actions to complement your words.

Soon the time would come when they would no longer be able to sustain the herds; and then, as if in obedience to some inaudible command, the migration would begin. Sheep senses and social cognition

several years or more and appear to have some capacity for forming mental images of the faces of absent individuals. The precence of such social cognition abilities in this species means that we must pay careful attention to welfare factors such as the composition and stability of their social environment as well as the nature of our own interactions with them. To many humans sheep are regarded as being as close to an automaton and amindless animal species as can be imagined and any serious consideration of their cognitive, social and general mental faculties deemed futile. I can give example about sheep memory. Every summer, just about time when apples are cooked, my mothers sheep flock goes to find appletrees. They could go there every season and after winter in barn it would be obvious that they wouldnt even remeber but they do. What senses do you think sheep has? Sensory discrimination abilities and their uses
