Black Beauty

Anna Sewell (1820-1878) wrote only one novel during her lifetime, a book describing the life of a beautiful, black horse, Black Beauty. Sewell was very concerned about animals and used the book to write about the terrible treatment of horses in England at the time. The book is written from the point of view of the horse, which helps us to understand the influence that good and bad treatment had on the horses in the story. Black Beauty spent his early years in a picturesque, green field with his mother and some other young colts. When it was time for him to be trained to serve men, he was gently and patiently broken in by his master. He learned to wear a saddle and bridle, and carry a human quietly on his back. Black Beauty learnt about the way horses can suffer because of men very early in life

Oliver twist - kokkuvõte

Chapter1: An unknown woman was found lying in the street and brought into the workhouse. She delivered a sickly child who had trouble breathing. The woman, without a word of who she was, died and left her new born boy, Oliver, to the drunken nurse that stood by. Chapter2: The State gave Oliver to Mrs. Mann who housed a number of orphaned children. Mrs. Mann took a large portion of the money given to her by the authorities for each child's food so Oliver grew up small and malnourished. On his ninth birthday, the town beadle, Mr. Bumble, came to collect Oliver and take him to the board for an interview. They told him he was to live with other wards of the state to become educated and learn a trade. Oliver did not mind this, but soon after he arrived, the state decided to implement a plan that would save money by feeding the people very little. After a time on this diet, the boys at the table chose Oliver to go ask the head cook for more gruel. Oliver did this, and was taken away. A flye

"Anna Karenina" kokkuvõte

In another climactic event, Vronsky loses a horserace he is slated to win. Vronsky loses the race because he is distracted by his relationship with Anna, especially because his brother and mother very much disapprove of the affair. His mother thinks he is becoming too dangerously preoccupied with a married woman. Further, Vronsky is becoming frustrated at having to hide his life with Anna. With all that on his mind, Vronsky falls off his horse during the race and the horse, Frou Frou, dies: "She flew over the ditch as though not noticing it. She flew over it like a bird; but at the same instant Vronsky, to his horror, felt that he had failed to keep up with the mare's pace, that he had, he did not know how, made a fearful, unpardonable mistake, in recovering his seat in the saddle. All at once his position had shifted and he knew something awful had happened." Right before the race Vronsky goes to see Anna and learns of the pregnancy. Anna is astounded at

The Cement Garden Character Sketch

The Cement Garden - Ian McEwan Character Sketch - Tom Tom is the brother of the narrator of the story. He is the youngest child in the family. Tom was a 6-year-old little boy with pale skin. He had a bit big ears, black hair and his smile seemed idiotic. Tom was tender but mettlesome. Since he was the youngest child in the family he was mostly left out due to his age. Other siblings had their own activities together and Tom was too young to understand or take part. I.g. the game of scientists examining a specimen from outer space. His relationship with his father had changed after his father had become semi-invalid. After the incident Tom’s father was very severe with him. He felt like he had to compete for mother’s attention and frequently spited him with stinging criticism. Tom was afraid of his father. Tom’s mother was aware of the situation but did not intervene. “She took all this in silence.
