Christopher Vogler The Writers Journey

of the movie business, at Disney, Fox, and Paramount. I've had the chance to try out the Hero's Journey concepts with the big toys. I saw where it works but also where my understanding of it fell short and needed to be adjusted. M y beliefs about what makes a good story were tested in the toughest arenas on earth — Hollywood story conferences and the world marketplace — and I hope my understanding has grown from the objections, doubts, and questions of my esteemed colleagues, and from the reaction of the audience. At the same time, I kept up a schedule of lecturing about The Writer's Journey that took me far afield from the literal, geographic bounds of Hollywood, into the greater-world Hollywood, the international film community. I had the fortune to see how the ideas of the Hero's Journey unfold in cultures different from the one I grew up in, as I traveled to Barcelona, M a u i , Berlin, Rome, London, Sydney, and so on.

CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

She could still speak, but she had no recollection of any part of her past life. She was a total amnesiac. At first, the doctors thought it would be temporary. But weeks passed and no trace of her memory returned. Her husband and children visited her daily, but she did not know them. This was such an unusual case that other doctors and specialists came to visit her as well, to test her and ask her questions about her condition. 1 ccc_tracy_1_1-17.qxd 6/23/03 2:46 PM Page 2 2 ➤ CHANGE YOUR THINKING, CHANGE YOUR LIFE ■ STARTING OVER Eventually, she went home, her memory a complete blank. ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

The orchestral music will be discussed in some detail, bringing forth the human being and their eternal problems in the widest and deepest sense. The need to be concise and comprehensive has directed the choice of music. I have attempted to elicit the most essential without analysing all of the details. However, the reverse may happen and some of the essential may get lost. Nevertheless, it is impossible to handle all the challenges of one specific musical field in a single book. Several questions connected with creativity, both of the musician (inducements, scope of ideas, intentions) and the listener-auditor (traditionalism, novelty, subjective wishes), can be answered most effectively by the music itself. Thus many unanswered questions remain. Therefore, this book should be considered as an attempt to convey a general picture. Moreover, I had to set limits in the treatment of the historical-cultural status forming an integral part of the whole.

American Literature

The making of a new nation. The Enlightenment in America. The emergence of the notion of the American Dream. The great Enlighteners: Crèvecoeur, Jefferson, Paine, Franklin. The American Enlightenment is the intellectual thriving period in the United States in the midtolate 18th century (17151789), especially as it relates to American Revolution on the one hand and the European Enlightenment on the other. Influenced by the scientific revolution of the 17th century and the humanist period during the Renaissance, the Enlightenment took scientific reasoning and applied it to human nature, society, and religion. American Enlightenment a gradual but powerful awakening that established the ideals of democracy, liberty, and religious tolerance in the people of America. If there were just one development that directly caused the American Revolution and uplifted the intellectual culture of the continent while it was only a British colony, it would be the American Enlightenment. Broadly

Education

in Moscow last winter when he said that the designers and perpetrators of the Holocaust were the heirs of Kant and Goethe. In most respects the Germans were the best educated people on Earth, but their education did not serve as an adequate barrier to barbarity. What was wrong with their education? In Wiesel's words: "It emphasized theories instead of values, concepts rather than human beings, abstraction rather than consciousness, answers instead of questions, ideology and efficiency rather than conscience." The same could be said of the way our education has prepared us to think about the natural world. It is a matter of no small consequence that the only people who have lived sustainably on the planet for any length of time could not read, or, like the Amish, do not make a fetish of reading. My point is simply that education is no guarantee of decency, prudence, or wisdom. More of the same kind of education will only compound our problems
