The Witch Trials in Salem

Metaphorical usage In modern terminology 'witch-hunt' has acquired usage referring to the act of seeking and persecuting any perceived enemy, particularly when the search is conducted using extreme measures and with little regard to actual guilt or innocence. It is used whether or not it is sanctioned by the government, or merely occurs within the "court of public opinion". The first such use reported by the Oxford English Dictionary dates to 1932. Another early instance is George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia (1938). The term is used by Orwell to describe how, in the Spanish Civil War, political persecutions became a regular occurrence. The term is used when a hunt for wrongdoers becomes abused, and a defendant can be convicted merely on an accusation. For example, in the History Channel documentary America: The

By 660 only Sussex & the Isle of Wight had not accepted the new faith. Latin became the language of the Church. From the end of the 8th cent. and during the 9th & 10th centuries Western Europe was attacked by new barbarians who came from the North Norway, Sweden & Denmark and were called Northmen. In different countries they were known as the Vikings, the Normans, the Danes. As England was more often raided from Denmark, the new invaders came to be known in English history as the Danes, the Norwegians invaded Ireland & Scotland. The Danes were of the same Germanic race as the Anglo-Saxons, but they still lived in tribes, were pagans. The Danes were well armed with long swords, spears, daggers, axes, bows, iron helmets & chain armour. Their ships were sailing-boats, but they were also provided wiht oars. The sails were often red & blue & green. At the prow of the ship there was usually a carved dragon's head which rose high out of the water

Christopher Vogler The Writers Journey

of T i l l s colorful character from stories I had read as a child and was delighted to take up the challenge. T h e film was released in Germany as Till Euknspiegel, and I a m hopeful it will be released in English one day under its English title, Jester Till T h e experience taught me a multitude of lessons that I have tried to incorporate into the present edition. Next up, I got involved as an executive producer of an independent feature, P.S. Your Cat Is Dead, a c t o r / d i r e c t o r / w r i t e r Steve Guttenberg s adaptation of the play and novel by James Kirkwood. T h i s took me deep into the editing room for a period of months, another of the sacred temples of the movie business and for me, a place

The Middle Ages

The French king was mad & his nobles were quarrelsome. He managed to capture most of Normandy & the nearby areas. By the treaty of Troyes in 1420 Henry was recognised as heir to the mad king & married Katherine of Valois, the king's daughter. But he never became the king of France, he died a few months before the French king. His 9-month-old baby son Henry VI inherited the thrones of England & France. Henry the V's brother John duke of Bedford continued to enlarge the area under English control, but soon the French, inspired by Joan of Arc began to fight back. John of Bedford died in 1435 & with the loss of Cascony in 1453 the Hundred Years War was over. England had lost everything except for the newly captured port of Calais. Henry VI grew up to be simple-minded & book-loving. He hated the warlike nobles & was unsuitable for such a violent society. He was civilised & gentle man. He founded 2 places of
