As for the problems of integration of the Russian community in the Republic of Estonia, it is very likely that the xenophobia of the local population has brought about the development of the closed Russian community. Clearly, it is a most paradoxical situation: on the one hand, xenophobia has helped us to preserve our culture and nation. On the other hand, xenophobia is by far not compatible with the contemporary ideas of a modern society. Unfortunately, the phobias and prejudices that have developed during the past centuries are hard to get over. What would be the possible ways of getting rid of the phobias and intolerance that we suffer from? In my opinion, the key to success lies in education. Compared to the old times, we are now able to use an extremely powerful information search and exchange systems. Report

Report A report is based on facts/data etc. The writer knows more than the reader. The reader needs the information. A report should be clear and easy to follow. The person who reads it should find the information quickly. THINK: why you are writing the report, why the reader needs your report and what she might be interested in. Think about the best way to present the facts. If it’s a report of events (e.g. a traffic accident), describe them in chronological order. It should NOT be written like a letter! NO salutation/sign-off. Impersonal style (PASSIVE!), unless you make suggestions or give personal opinion – then you can use “I”. Formal language –no contractions, slang, etc. You can use the following format at the beginning of the report: To: From: (DO NOT write your own name. A member of the student committee etc. is fine) Subject: Basic structure 200 (+/- 10%)

Sperling conducted a classic experiment on how long sensory memory can hold information. He flashed a matrix of 12 letters on a screen for 1/20 of a second and asked to recall as many letters as the participants could (typically 3 to 5 letters). The second condition was a tone, which signaled the participants to report a certain row of letters. In this case they recalled all 4 letters in a row. They did not know ahead which row will be signaled so this implies that they had stored an image of the whole matrix and they had now time to retrieve the information from any one line before it rapidly disappeared. If the tone was delayed, they did poorly again. This shows that it is difficult, perhaps impossible, to retain complete information in purely visual form for more than a fraction of a second.
