At age fourteen he operated a profitable nail manufacturing operation in his father's workshop during the Revolutionary War.[2] Because his stepmother opposed his wish to attend college, Whitney worked as a farm laborer and schoolteacher to save money. He prepared for Yale at Leicester Academy (now Becker College) and under the tutelage of Rev.Elizur Goodrich of Durham, Connecticut he entered the Class of 1789. Whitney expected to study law but, finding himself short of funds, accepted an offer to go to South Carolina as a private tutor. Instead of reaching his destination, he was convinced to visit Georgia. Georgia was a magnet for New Englanders seeking their fortunes. He invented the cotton gin, which was the beginning of his success. After he f...

The Pilgrim Fathers

On November 9th, 1620, the `Mayflower' sighted what is now Cape Cod. Despite seeing land, the crew of the `Mayflower' searched for another month to find somewhere to land. Where they eventually landed was called New Plymouth. On December 25th, after finding a place where the `Mayflower' could be safely anchored, the Pilgrim Fathers began to build the first house for common use. By February 1621, 50% of the Pilgrim Fathers had died as a result of the cold weather and the inadequate housing that they had built for themselves. A Native American called Squanto helped those Pilgrim Fathers who survived the harsh winter. He showed them how to sow maize and how to cultivate the crop. Seeds brought from England were of little use in their new environment. By the summer of 1621, the Pilgrim Fathers had built houses for themselves and had gathered up a small harvest. They were well recovered in health and strength, and had all things in good plen...

Temperate deciduous forests, woodlands and shrub Tartu 2008 Location: Temperate forests are typical of all European continent, the Eastern region of Asia (in special, Chinese and Japan) and North America. Also are finded in tempered areas of South America. Climate: The average temperature in temperate forests is 50° F. Summers are mild, and average about 70° F, while winter temperatures are often well blow freezing. The average yearly precipitation is 30-60 inches. This precipitation falls throughout the year, but in the winter it falls as snow. There are four seasons in this biome, with warm summers and cold winters, often snowy. In autumn, the leaves change color and fall from the trees. The leaves decay on the forest floor, so the soil is very rich. Because of this, and because of the long growing season, many deciduous forests have been cut down for farming purposes. Plants: Trees of this biome include hardwood...

The narrator obliges, and the two become friends. The pilot learns that the little prince comes from a small planet that the little prince calls Asteroid 325 but that people on Earth call Asteroid B-612. Akaatsia

Akaatsia Akaatsia (Acacia) on mitmekesine, väga laia levikuga puude ja põõsaste perekond liblikõieliste sugukonnast. Robiinia (Robinia) ehk valge- ehk ebaakaatsia ei kuulu akaatsiate hulka. Süstemaatika ja evolutsioon ● Akaatsialiike on praegu teada umbes 1350 ● Osade liikide jaoks on siiski mingil määral kasutusel teine perekonnanimi Racosperma. ● Kaheksakümnendatel lepiti kokku jagunemises kolmeks rühmaks (alamperekonnaks), kuid laialt neid kasutusele ei võetud. ○ Acacia (-alamperek. Acacia) ○ Senegalia (-alamperek. Aculeiferum) ○ Racosperma (-alamperek. Phyllodineae) Hiljutised uurimused on välja selgitanud umbes viie üksuse (perekonna või alamperekonna) olemasolu. Need on: ● Acacia (= Acacia): 163 liiki ● Senegalia (= Aculeiferum): 203 liiki ● Racosperma (= Phyllodineae): 961 liiki ● Acaciella (= Aculeiferum sektsioon Filicinae): 15 liiki ● "perekond x" (= veel nimetamata alamperekond, kuhu ...

Rare animals

Rare animals Rare Chinese tiger seen in the wild Researchers have confirmed that a wild tiger, photographed by a farmer in the Qinba Mountains of Shaanxi Province, Central China, is indeed that of the critically endangered South China tiger. The South China tiger classified as one of only five subspecies of tiger still alive today is extremely rare, with only an estimated 20 to 30 still remaining in the wild. The wildlife and conservation group WWF says the South China tiger is actually native to the Hainan most forests of south-east China, and because there are so few individuals left, it is regarded by many scientists as being "functionally extinct" in the wild. But a group called Save China's Tigers has been working on a captive- breeding programme and hopes to reach an agreement with China's State Forestry Administration to reintroduce captive-bred animals into the wild. If all goes...

Essay about NewZealand and Australia

In my essay I will describe the most characteristic features of the Maori people and the aborigines. I will divide the essay in 3 parts the Maori people, the aborigines and their comparison. Maori are the host people of New Zealand. Their name is derived from Ma-Uri which means the children of heaven. The arrival of the Maori people to New Zealand is considered to be somewhat of a mystery. It is known that first Polynesians arrived to New Zealand about 1000 years ago, when navigator Kupe discovered the land in 950 AD. He named it Aotearoa The Land of the Long White Cloud. Although these facts can be debatable, I will focus my attention on this interpretation of Maori history. After the Maori arrived to New Zealand, they started to develop into tribes and sub tribes, this tribal system is still in use. Their culture had almost no influence from the rest of the world. They evolved a culture endorsed by agriculture and hunting. Of cour...

Savanna

Savanna A savanna is a grassland ecosystem with scattered trees or shrubs. In savannas trees are small or widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. It is often believed that savannas are characterized by widely spaced, scattered trees, however in many savanna communities tree densities are higher and trees are more regularly spaced than in forest communities. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of C4 grasses. Savannas are also characterised by seasonal water availability, with the majority of rainfall being confined to one season of the year. Savannas can be associated with several types of biomes. Savannas are frequently seen as a transitional zone, occurring between forest and desert or prairie. Although the term savanna is believed to have originally come from a Native American word describing "land which is without trees but with ...

Othello opens in the stately city of Venice

Othello opens in the stately city of Venice, a worldwide hub for trade and commerce. The first characters introduced are Iago, an ensign denied promotion by Othello, and Roderigo, a jealous ex- suitor of Desdemona. The two are in route to describing to Senator Brabantio the elopement of Othello and Desdemona, Brabantio’s daughter. Quickly revealing Iago’s deceitful nature, the matter is breached to Brabantio and soon afterward brought before the Duke of Venice to be discussed. Othello and Desdemona plead their love to the Duke, refuting the Senator’s claims that Othello bewitched his daughter, and that their marriage was true. After Othello claims that he wooed her with his adventurous stories, Desdemona herself testifies that she fell honestly in love with the Moor and freely married him. Following their clearance of wrongdoing, Othello is immediately sent to defend against the Turks in Cyrpus. Taking Desdemona with him, Othello sets...

Christmas in different countrys(jõulud erinevates maades)

Christmas in Australia Christmas in Australia is often very hot. Whereas the northern hemisphere is in the middle of winter, Australians are baking in summer heat. It is not unusual to have Christmas Day well into the mid 30 degrees Celsius, or near 100 degrees Fahrenheit. A traditional meal includes a turkey dinner, with ham, and pork. A flaming Christmas plum pudding is added for dessert. In the Australian gold rushes, Christmas puddings often contained a gold nugget. Today a small favor is baked inside. Whoever finds this knows s/he will enjoy good luck. Another treat is Mince Pies. Some Australians and particularly tourists often have their Christmas dinner at midday on a local beach, Bondi Beach in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs attracts thousands of people on Christmas Day. Other families enjoy their day by having a picnic. If they are at home, the day is punctuated by swimming in a pool, playing Crick...

Britain history.

Britain History Pre-Norman Britain The Iberians brought their metal-working skills and the first real civilization to Britain in the third millennium B.C and were overrun by various Celtic invasions that began in the 8th century. The Celts introduced their tribal organization and an early form of agriculture before they were forced westward by the Roman invasion. Forms of Celtic language are still spoken in Britain. Romans (with Julius Caesar in the head of them) first tried to occupy Britain in 55 B.C., but there was a rebellion in Gaul so they had to leave to fight against it. Next time they came in 43 A.D. and their leader was Emperor Claudius. Romans brought a lot with them. Their brought paved roads, the sites of important cities, the seeds of Christianity, the Roman law, Roman baths, language and advanced civilization. They also built Hadrian's Wall in 122 A.D. Romans occupied...
