Philosophy today

Philosophy Today The Great Divide Most contemporary philosophers follow one of two approaches "Continental" philosophy "Analytic" philosophy Continental philosophy is more influential on the European continent Analytic philosophy is predominant in the major research universities in the English-speaking world Analytic Philosophy Analytic philosophy developed from attempts in the early 20th century to make our concepts precise. The model of this procedure was science. Emphasis in contemporary analytic philosophy is on language and meaning, and meaning is understood as a relation between language and objective reality. Thus, understanding the structure of language is what reveals the structure of reality. Continental Philosophy At the same time that analytic philosophy was emerging, E. Husserl was developing his "phenomenological" approach...

How would you characterize Classical philosophy? Contemplative outlook, truth, intelligence, God is truth. b. Descartes 3. What is the main question that Descartes is trying to answer? Because the goal of this doubt is not to be skeptical but to prove that some things can not be doubted. 7. “...

Õigusfilosoofia

1. What is the object of philosophical study? The object of philosophical study is being itself on an abstract level. Everything and nothing can be or exist. Things like colour, nature, material things like a table just are, but the meaning of being in be-ing in itself is unclear. Non Material things can also be or exist. If something is, then it is a being. But what exactly is this IS that we can see or on the opposite can not see? Therefore this is one of the fundamental questions of philosophy. 2. Can you reject solipsism? Solipsism (solus ipse) means nothing exists, therefore everything is an illusion outside of our own minds. I think that it is true that we know WE as in myself exists. But i can not for certain say that the person reading this exists although it might seems like it to me. I think that you really can’t reject solipsism on the whole because you do know that you exists, but can you for certain say t...

The Lean Startup summary

The Lean Startup summary “The Lean Startup” was published in September 2011 by Eric Ries. Due to the popularity of the lean startup philosophy, the book was highly anticipated prior to its release, and quickly became a #2 New York Times bestseller. The reason why I picked this book is because it was something that i found interesting and I thought I would really enjoy reading book about business. Eric Ries defines in this book a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business. I learned about startup philosophy, which is used by both startups and more mature companies. This Book part´s are Vision, Define, Learn, Experiment, Leap, Test, Mea...

An analysis of the problem of Political Power - essee

An analysis of the problem of Political Power Written by: Katre Kikkas Introduction It is said that in the political philosophy there are only two questions: ,,Who can have what?" and ,,Who will decide over it?". It is not exactly like that but it is quite close to the trough, to begin with. The first question includes material amenity's, and dividing rights and liberties.(Wolff, 1996) What is power? It is ability to influence others to do something they otherwise would not. Also, others can be affected with threats and force. (Kilp, 2010) Political power includes also right to force the others and to punish them if they disobey. Who should have that kind of power? Actually the political power is quite mysterious by itself. If someone has legitimate political power over me then he or she has a right to force me to do things that they want.(Wolff, 1996) But how can other person have rig...

The Picture of Dorian Gray / Dorian Gray portree

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) Introduction The Picture of Dorian Gray came out in 1891, in Estonian 1929. It is the only published novel written by Oscar Wilde and also considered as a classic gothic horror fiction with a little bit of philosophy in it. I decided to read this book in Estonian, because I have two books in this language available at home. The book I read was published by Eesti Päevaleht in 2007 and it consists of 184 pages. The story is centred on Dorian Gray, a young man of great beauty and on his portrait, painted by Basil Hallward. From my point of view, I think that Wilde wanted to teach us a lesson about being too conceited and having such a high opinion of oneself. It is well known that nobody gets away without punishment. The Body The book tells the story of how a friend of Dorian, the artist Basil...

Hariduse areng kaasaegses Eestis (J.Dewey)

Minu essee eesmärk on vaadelda eesti haridussüsteemi arengut. Elu on ennast uuendav protsess keskkonda mõjutava tegevuse vahendusel. Elu järjepidevus tähendab püsivat keskkonna ümberkohanemist vastavalt elusorganismide vajaduste...

Environment al art Marika Rodionova 11a What is that?  The term "environmental art" often encompasses "ecological" concerns but is not specific to them. It primarily celebrates an artist's connection with nature using natural materials. The concept is best understood in relationship to historic earth/Land art and the evolving field of ecological art. The field is interdisciplinary in the fact that environmental artists embrace ideas from science and philosophy. The First Years of the School: Reval Gymnasium

The First Years of the School: Reval Gymnasium In the beginning the school was upheld by the city of Tallinn and it’s knighthood. The school was meant for the sons of the noblemen and citizens. There were 4 professors and 2 colleagues. Students studied reading, writing, maths, theology, music, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, law, poetry, speech, geography, history and philosophy. Older students studied in Latin. Music was very important. There were four classes: quarta, tertia, secunda and prima, prima being the last and quarta the lowest grade. The head of school was a rector. For the first 15 years the rector was Heinrich Vulpius whose Gymnasium Laws (show the picture) were used for more than a century. The set of laws influenced the life of the students a lot. They designated how the students were supposed to act in the school and in their free time. The school holiday

The school holiday – time for new challenges and adventures Changes and challenges can come in many forms. An holiday is the perfect place to try something new, to push yourself to a new limit and realise your dreams. You can do something that you've never tried before, like going to new places or take part of the adventure games. You can go to the gym or run every day 5 km. I like to go hiking in the woods or just take a daytrip to a city where I have never been before. The other possibility is to go for a mental challenge, like learning new language, or reading an interesting book. It is good challenge to take a science or philosophy book, something that is not so easy to read so you can be proud of yourself after finishing it. It is also possible to learn new skills such as cooking or dancing or making yourself a short film or learn a new computer program. Some people find yourself a job for a holiday and earn money. Sometimes all ...

Plato

PLATO My favorite and most interesting subject was about Plato. The fact that he is the worlds most known and widely read and studied philosophers is really interesting. I really like the metafors he used to compare every day life and problems. If he said that people are blind, he ment that people are dumb and havent learned things that life offers them. It is really amazing how Plato guessed so many years ago, what the future will bring. People havent changed, society and things around people have changed. Really great way to tell how people develop and gain experience, was through the metafor of ,,cave". Plato compared just born and small childer to people, who are in the beginning of the cave. Children are helpless just as the people who are in the dark, cold cave. Kids are also dumb and dont know how to deal with things, just like the people who are in the dark and cant see around them. Philosophy Aristotle - four causes or better "becauses" because they are the 4 ways in which we use the word "because" or answer the question "why?" 1. Material cause: - what it is made of - why is the bridge strong? because made of steel 2. Formal cause: - what form, definition or property it has - why is this salt? because made of sodium and chloride 3. Efficient cause: - what initiated the change or movement - why did the baseball move? because someone hit it 4.

Beowulf(poem and Grendel(book) comparison

Comparison of "Beowulf" and "Grendel" by John Gardner The text has more or less the same meaning in both of the extracts. The differences lie in the language use, character types, speakers, layout etc. In the original "Beowulf" epic Grendel displays nothing but the most primitive human qualities. He is a grotesque monster who terrorizes a small community of Danish warriors. Therefore he can be called a flat character. In the book "Grendel" the protagonist and antagonist have been swapped. Gardner greatly alters the monster's characterization. In his novel, very little separates Grendel from his human counterparts: he has a high level of intelligence, as well as a human capacity for both emotion and philosophy. As the text is written in the first person point of view through Grendel's eyes, one gets a quite good picture of him. Unfortunately he is fighting with the inevitable. He keeps attacking and eating t...

How much do you know about biology?

How much do you know about biology? What is biology? Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.[1] Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Although biology in its modern form is a relatively recent development, sciences related to and included within it have been studied since ancient times. Natural philosophy was studied as early as the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indian subcontinent, and China. Much of modern biology can be encompassed within five unifying principles: cell theory, evolution, genetics, homeostasis, and energy. Cell theory states that the cell is the fundamental unit of life, and that all living things are composed of one or more cells or the secreted products of those cells. Evolution is now use...

What does it mean to be human? In order to understand who is a human we need to understand what separates us from animals. The word ,,human" comes from homo sapiens which is Latin for ,,wise man". The name itself refers to the exact reason we are special our mental capability. What does ability to think give us and how does it affect out world? Human is a social being and cannot live without expressing himself. In order to communicate clearly we have developed a vast system of symbols languages. There are over 6000 different languages in the world and each language comes with a different culture. Because of our ability to remember, humans are able to transmit information from generation to generation. Humans know their history, because we remember what we have created. Our world-view is more than what is seen to the eye. Homo sapiens is a developing species. Our body has changed and so has our min...

In the 9th and 10th centuries, when Vikings invaded England, Old Norse words entered the language English from about 1300 to 1500 is known as Middle English. It was influenced by French and Latin.

Selline definitsioon on hästi lahti seletatav nelja osana.
