PUITMATERJALID

PUITMATERJALID Puit ehitusmaterjalina erineb suuresti tööstuslikult toodetud matejalidest. 2. Puit on kergesti töödeldabv ning liidete tegemine on lihtne tavapäraste töövahenditega 3. Puit on hea soojusisolaa...

Irish Potato Famine

Irish Potato Famine During the 19th century, 2/3 of the Irish people lived in very poor conditions under the British rule they had to work for upper-class English landlords, who never set foot in Ireland. The work was to raise crop for a tiny piece of land (most of tenants had less than an acre) where they could grow food (potatoes) for their own families. Potatoes were grown because they have all the necessary vitamins in them and only the potatoes would suffice to feed a family when grown on such tiny holdings. In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and people would pray for the next years' crop to be a proper one but it was even worse and on top of that, the winter of 1846 was the "severest in living memory". The crop, which previously had provided 60% of the nations' food...

Canada - history and provinces.

History First people who lived in Canada came by a land bridge from Russia and Greenland. They were the ancestors of nowadays indigenous people of Canada. They just searched better for living places and followed their prey and they didn't even know they were on a different continent. The first explorers were Norse seafarers known as Vikings. As they sailed from Iceland to Greenland in AD 985, they were blown far off their course and they saw the coast what must have been Labrador. The forested areas of Canada's coast encouraged further explorations, because their settlement lacked lumber. They established a colony, what they called Vinland on Newfoundland. It died out during the 14th and 15th centuries. 500 years later Europeans started looking for a waterway to Asia, because travelling with spices over land wasn't very safe anymore. The first explorer was Christopher Kolumbus who reached America's shore in 1492, although he thought it ...

Kanada ajalugu, regioonid ja kliima

Early History The first inhabitants of Canada were native Indian people who were called as Inuits. They are believed to be in Canada since about 10000 BC. The Inuits came to Canada from Asia crossing the Bering land bridge. The earliest discoveries in Canada were made by the Vikings. In AD 985 Vikings sailing from Iceland to Greenland were blown westward off their course and the Vikings sighted the coast of Labrador peninsula. The report of forested areas encouraged further exploration because the colonies in Greenland which belonged to the Vikings lacked lumber. In AD 1000 Leif Ericson became the first European to land in North America. The first colony was established what was described as Vinland by the Vikings. It was located on the northernmost tip of todays Newfoundland. There has also been a theory that the Vikings penetrated Hudson Bay and reached the Great Lakes region but recent investigations have...

Despite Canada's great size, it is one of the world's most sparsely populated countries. The Medium Is the Message

1 The Medium Is the Message In a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact,, the medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium-that is, of any extension of ourselves-result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology. Thus, with automation, for example, the new patterns of human association tend to eliminate jobs, it is true. That is the negative result. Positively, automation creates roles for people, which is to say depth of involvement in their work and human association that our preceding mechanical technology had destroyed. Many people would be disposed to say that it was not the machine, but what one did with the machine, that was its meaning or message. In terms of the ...

Bridges presentation

Foreword Bridging rivers, gorges, narrows, straits, and valleys always has played an important role in the history of human settlement. Since ancient times, bridges have been the most visible testimony of the noble craft of engineers. A bridge can be defined in many ways, but Andrea Palladio, the great 16th century Italian architect and engineer, hit on the essence of bridge building when he said "...bridges should befit the spirit of the community by exhibiting commodiousness, firmness, and delight." In more practical terms, he went on to explain that the way to avoid having the bridge carried away by the violence of water was to make the bridge without fixing any posts in the water. Since the beginning of time, the goal of bridge builders has been to create as wide a span as possible which is commodious, firm, and occasionally delightful. Spanning greater distances is a distinct measure ...
