Nägemis taju, Gibson VS Gregory

Which provides a better account of human perception? Sensation involves physical stimulation of the sense organs, while perception is the organisation and interpretation of incoming sensory information. The Gestalt theorists first identified many of the principles that dominate in human visual perception. As Dowell (1995) has observed: "To perceive seems effortless. To understand perception is nevertheless a great challenge" (cited in Gross, 2005, pp 244). This essay will look at Gregory's theory and Gibson's theory of visual perception whether one or the other offers a better explanation of human visual perception. According to top-down perceptual processing theorists, perception is the end result of an indirect process that involves making inferences about the world based on knowledge and expectations. An example of this process is Gregory's (1980) constructivist theory. He suggests that to avoid sensory overload, we need to select from the information surrounding us, therefore, we often supplement perception with unconscious inferences. Thus he argues that perception begins with an incomplete retinal image that is two- dimensional, flat and size depends on distance. He says that perception is a constructive process in which the two-dimensional retinal image is elaborated to a three- dimensional picture in our brain, based on personal knowledge and experience. In other words the processes of perception is essentially affected by our expectations and probability in perceiving the world. Therefore conceptually driven perceptual processing is called a top- down process due to the indirect process that involves making assumptions about the w...

Should countries encourage tourism?

It is the fastest growing industry in this world. But it can be negative as well. So should countries encourage tourism? Tourism has many advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that countries have more money so they can improve its infrastructure which is a benefit for the local people. For example, roads and communication links built. Tourism provides indirect employment in terms of workers who help to produce goods and services in the economy to meet the increasing demands of the population and the tourists. Tourists also take with them, souvenirs which can be produced by people. In spite of the advantages of tourism, there can be many disadvantages too, as there are always two sides of everything. First of all, tourists cause pollution. Increased pollution disturbs local residents and also it may discourage tourists from further entering the country. Secondly tourists don't always respect traditional cultures and cultures can be broken down as a result of tourism. The country may lose its original values and a sense of identity. The local residents might just start following the way tourists live. For conclusion, even though tourism carries a lot of disadvantages, it is still a positive thing, because it developes countries. So yes, countries should encourage tourism....

Money

We use money every day to pay for things we buy. We can pay with either coins or paper. This sort of money is known as cash. But there is also another kind of money, like checks, credit cards and so on. The idea of having such thing as money is one of the most best developed by man. I think many people do not know where this idea came from, and why money is valuable. As I know thousand years ago, money was not used. People who wanted to exchange something found that it was sometimes difficult to find someone who had exactly what they wanted and who at the same time wanted exactly what they had to exchange. In order to make exchanges easier, the circle of exchanges widened from two parties to three or more. A had what B wanted; B had what C wanted; C had what A wanted. In this way, indirect exchanges began to develop. Eventually, the most marketable or saleable of these goods acquired the function of money, a medium of exchange. Many goods have served as money. Money is an important social institution. A complex society simply could not function without some kind of common medium of exchange. Money also allows people to specialize in what they do best and thus increase their efficiency in ways that benefit both themselves and others. People no longer have to produce everything that they need in the way of food, clothes, and housing. They can concentrate on what they do best, exchange that good or service for money, and then exchange that money for whatever else they want. In conclusion I would like to say I hate people saying money's not important at all... That there are some more important things in the world like friendship, love and so on. If you think so, then you are either a rather rich person or just an na...

Pride and Prejudice Book report

Austen sold the copyright for Pride and Prejudice to Thomas Egerton. Egerton published the first edition of Pride and Prejudice in three hardcover volumes in January. The tone is light and a little humoristic. Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and life among English gentility. At first the book was called "First impressions" and this gives a better expression to the requests of the author, than the later heading. People meet, do not understand each other and communication does not offer joy either. So this is contrary to love at first sight. It is a tale of love and values in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. It is a story of five sisters and their lives. It is a story through the dangerous, exciting and loving feelings of the characters. The Bennets five...

Charles Darwin

But animal breeders had long since discovered certain principles of breeding for desired characteristics, and acquired characteristics played no part in this process. Only through proper training could one find out if a hunting dog had favourable qualities. But the training did not create those characteristics in the dog's offspring. Lamarckianism was now discredited, and the question of evolution remained a mystery. Many scientists rejected evolution and the Great Chain of Life feeling that its concepts had no place in biological science. The key was produced by the theorist of the "dismal science" of economics, Thomas Malthus. Malthus said that human (and animal) populations increased at a geometric rate, whereas food supply increased only at an arithmetic rate. Therefore population was continually outstripping food supply, and was kept in check only by starvation, or by indirect acts such as war and diseases. Malthusianism raised a very good question which is not easily noticed. Which individuals survived in hard times, and which died? Luck was probably the largest factor, but not the only one, other factors applied, such as the strong, the courageous, or the adaptable had a somewhat better chance of surviving than those who lacked those characteristics. To the degree that strength, drive, or adaptability were acquired characteristics, they would have no effect on future generations since Lamarckianism had been proven wrong. But to the degree that some individuals inherited these characteristics, they were more likely to survive, to hand down these same characteristics to their descendants. As the lower branches of the ancient African trees were plucked bare, the longer-necked ancestral giraffes were more likely to survive than their shorter-necked cousins, and they handed down the tendency toward l...
