Pessimism vs optimism

Pessimism vs. Optimism Different approaches to the ‘population-resources’ debate Malthus Task: View figure 13.57 (page 378 of Waugh). Draw the graph and discuss. Malthus believed that there was a finite optimum population in relation to food supply and that an increase beyond that point would lead to a decline in living standards and to war, famine and disease.  An increase in the population above the optimum limit would therefore lead to war, famine and disease. A PESSIMISTIC approach  Thomas Malthus (1798) proposed his work during the early stages of the industrial revolution when inadequate food and clothing were common features in England.  His argument was that population increases (geometrically) or at an exponential rate if unchecked i.e. 1-2-4-8- 16-32 etc  Food supply at best increases at an arithmetic rate i.e.1-2-3-4-5-6 etc ...

All about High Tech

All about High Tech High tech is technology that is at the cutting edge--the most advanced technology currently available. There is no specific class of technology that is high tech--the definition shifts over time--so products hyped as high tech in the 1960s would now be considered, if not exactly low tech, then at least somewhat obsolete. This fuzzy definition has led to marketing departments describing nearly all new products as high tech. Economy Because the high-tech sector of the economy develops or uses the most advanced technology known, it is often seen as having the most potential for future growth. This perception has led to high investment in high-tech sectors of the economy. High-tech startup enterprises receive a large portion of venture capital. However, if, as has happened in the past, investment exceeds actual potential, then investors can lose all or most of their investment. High tech is often viewed as high risk, but...

Fifty years from now, life will be much easier and healthier for odrinary people than it is today

Fifty years from now, life will be much easier and healthier for odrinary people than it is today In fifty years time the wolrd will be very diffriend from what it is today. In my opinion people will gather into two groups ones that will love and be obsessed with robots and other new technology and the ones who want to live like their grandmothers and grandfathers. They want to grow their own food and give up on technology. Most likely technology will improve faster than ever and that might cause some problems. Like in the movie ,,I,Robot".People will improve technology so fast that they will make mistakese mistakse that might kill human race. They might build robots so advance that we won't be able to control them anymore. Also there is the ,,Clobal Warming" people are talking about. The world will run out of water. People will die in thirst. Waters price will be higher than a kg of gold. On the other hand ...

How does the United States influence Estonia?

How does the United States influence Estonia? As one of the world leading countries the United States influences Estonia in many ways. The United States has a lot of influence on Estonia in politics, culture, technology and of course it still continues its influence. The United States of America is one of the biggest countries in the world that can actually influence the world in many ways. For instance when the United States goes to war, every other country that has singed a treaty has to join him. Even when the States are in dept they can have major influences on the rest of the world by bringing everyone else down to. A lot of business goes through the United States and when some deals go bad, a lot of other countries have to suffer because of that. The United States is often referenced to “The land of opportunities” because people can earn a living out of everything. Cultural impact is ...

Speech on Fast developing technology

Good afternoon! My name is Egert and... ...Today I'm here to talk about advantages and disadvantages of fast development of modern technology. I think we all have noticed that almost every day there are new technology achievements at the stores. Whether we like it or not, it improves in every second, in every minute. New Apple iPhones, iPads and other i-devices are everywhere. Even tractors have a built-in computer in them. So, is it a blessing or a curse? I'm sure that most of you think it's a blessing. Do you? We like our comfortable lives, we like it when everything has been done for us already. We want to have the newest mobile phones and best cars to show off and be better than our friends. However, it can make people selfish and egoistic. They want more and more and more. In the past 10 years modern technology has improved so fast that it is clearly visible when we compare technology in the years 2002 ...

The industrial revolution

The industrial revolution The Industrial Revolution, which took place from the 18th to 19th centuries, was a period during which predominantly agrarian, rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. By mid-century, many people worked for small businesses or on farms, laboring in fields that would yield barely enough food to feed the family. New inventions and technology began to change that, however. Larger factories opened and produced new farm equipment, such as the steel plow and the tractor, which allowed farmers to cultivate bigger fields and produce more food that cost much less. Developments in the iron industry also played a central role in the Industrial Revolution. In the early 18th century, Englishman Abraham Darby (1678-1717) discovered a cheaper, easier method to produce cast iron, using a coke-fueled (as opposed to charcoal-fired) furnace. In the 1850s, British engineer Henry Bessemer ...

How does the United States influence Estonia?

How does the United States influence Estonia? The United States of America is one of the most influential countries in the world. Its’ influence can be seen even in Estonia. Estonian national security is built upon being a member of NATO and it is dependent on Article 5. Therefore, it is important for us to be in good political relations with America because it is the most influential member of the organization. To stay in good terms some of our political decisions might be affected by the United States, however, it will stay out of the public view. Although Estonia is not directly dependant on America economically but as the United States’ economy has an effect on the global economy, we are bound to be influenced indirectly. In the cultural aspect, Americanisation is taking spreading all over the world. In our everyday life, we are exposed to American culture because it is everywhere: music, films, food. With th...

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY A century ago communication across any distance was dependent upon the telegraph or letters. No jets crossed the ocean, no television pictures enabled us instantly to see events in any part of the world, there were no worldwide telephone networks and no computers. It is just a short lifetime since humanity first travelled into space and discovered how fragile our planet looks. FROM FIREWORKS TO THE MOON At first glance you might think that there couldn't possibly be anything common between a 13 th century festival in China and the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. However, there is a link and that is that they both relied on the use of rockets. The Chinese first developed rockets by filling bamboo tubes with an explosive made from saltpetre, charcoal, and sulphur. The sealed tubes would be thrown onto fires during celebrations because it was thought ...

Life in the future

Life in the future In the domain of technology, robots will have replaced people in factories. Many factories already use robots. Big companies prefer robots- they do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere- in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes. In the 2050 every human have an opportunity to go on space travel, because space travels will cost less. Even the poor people can allow this. Schooling will be much better and cheaper (in the long run) in 2050. The word ,,school" will no longer be in our vocabulary. School will be called a ,,work force". There will be no more textbooks, paper, pens or pencils. Everything will be done electronically. Classes will be conjoyned together such as, English and History, Math and Science, etc. School will be more interesting and fun, plus school days will be shorter. By 2050 the work will be much easier. People wi...

My ideal home I have always dreamed about my ideal home. My dreams are not big. I would rather live in a small house in a cosy place. I would prefer country. If i would have a big garden i would be happy. My wife could work in the garden. My ideal home would have 2 floors with a basement. In the basement there should be a big room where i could relax. There should also be a gym and a sauna. That room should have a big couch around the room and a big table in the middle. On the ground floor there should be the kitchen with the latest technology. The fridge should be full of food. The living room should also be on that floor. It should have all comforts. The first floor should be the floor where are the bedrooms. There should be my and my wifes bedroom and our childern bedrooms. Also there should be the guests room. I think my dreams aren´t so big that I can not make them true. I`m looking forward to live...

18.09.2012 Mari-Liis Eha 120876KAKB My interest in chemical engineering I studied for 3 years in an english-science biased class in secondary school. My favourite subjects were chemistry and biology. We had many field trips. For instance, we had field trip to Kohtla-Järve to see the oil shale industry and also tours to see the wind generators. This is where my attraction to environment and chemistry grew together and I wanted to know more about further job and education opportunities in this field. I had a chance to be a job shadower at a company called ,,Orto", which is a chemical industry. One of the employees who I was shadowing had learned food chemistry and the other employee chemistry and environment. The job was truly fascinating and base...

Life in future

Life in future I think that technology will definitely influence our lives, but I don't think that life will be better than now, rather worse. The air won't be suitable for breathing so there will be probably some kind of masks or glass cities, where to live. Water won't be drinkable and people will buy all needful water from shops, actually not from shops but from the internet, because there won't be shops anymore. Food nearly won't exist anymore; energy will come in tablet form. Transport will be a lot comfortable and faster. Cars will be soundless and all vehicles will whir ten times faster. You will think nothing of taking a holiday in outer space. Students will learn from TV, recorders and teaching machines. They will get pills to make them learn faster. We shall be healthier, too. There will be no common colds, cancer, tooth decay or mental illness. But this will be artificial and impermanent....

Comparison of Education in Britain and Estonia

Comparison of Education in Britain and Estonia When looking into the educational systems of Britain and Estonia, several differences appear. In this essay I am going to point out some of the most distinguish features in the education of both countries. Firstly, there are dissimilarities in the age at which children go to school. In Estonia the age is 7 whereas in Britain children start their educational journey already as young as 5 years old. Primary school lasts 6 years just like in Estonia but the pupils in Britain are 2 years younger when they finish primary school than the pupils in Estonia. However, students in Britain and Estonia finish secondary school at the same age because secondary school lasts 5 years in Britain instead of 3 like it is in Estonia. Altogether, compulsory school in Britain lasts 11 years which is 2 years more than in Estonia. Moreover, there are slight differences as for the compulsory ...

Reasons why human beings are unique

"I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." So said the physicist Robert Oppenheimer, who helped to invent the atomic bomb. The two bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 killed around 200,000 Japanese people. No other species has ever wielded such power, and no species could. The technology behind the atomic bomb only exists because of a cooperative hive mind: hundreds of scientists and engineers working together. The same unique intelligence and cooperation also underlies more positive advances, such as modern medicine. But is that all that defines us? In recent years, many traits once believed to be uniquely human, from morality to culture, have been found in the animal kingdom (see part one in this two-part series). So, what exactly makes us special? The list might be smaller than it once was, but there are some traits of ours that no other creature on Earth can match. No animal can get close to the devastatio...

We live in a constantly changing world - essee

We live in a constantly changing world There seems to be no stability or certanity about anything. Nations rise and fall, governments come to power and tumble, armies march and retreat, healthy people become sick and on and on the world goes. On the one hand the world we are living in is amazing, because science, medicine, technology, and so on are advancing at an ever-increasing pace. It has made our lives much easier than it was 100 years ago. For example we have phones, television, fast cars, eco towns, highrise buildings and so on. But on the other hand the world can also be frightful. People are starving, and do not have water to drink nor wash themselves. But somewhere someone has unlimited food and water and never thinks about those people who are in need. Due to the over consumption of water, gas, wood et cetera, we might be in a lack of mineral resources in the future. And if they run out, we need to find an alternative vari...

Human overpopulation Liis Lukk MJ15 What is overpopulation? • Overpopulation is an undesirable condition where the number of existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of Earth. • Human overpopulation is among the most pressing environmental issues • Overpopulation can result from an increase in births, a decline in mortality rates, an increase in immigration, or an unsustainable biome and depletion of resources • Human population has been rising continuously since the end of the Black Death, around the year 1350 • The most significant increase has been since the 1950s, mainly due to medical advancements and increases in agricultural productivity • The recent rapid increase in human population over the past three centuries has raised concerns that the planet may not be able to sustain present or future numbers of inhabitants. THE VALUE OF THINGS VS THE PRICE OF THINGS

Anna-Maria THE VALUE OF THINGS VS THE PRICE OF THINGS The price and value of things has changed a lot of over the times. Every person value things variously. It depends on people, what they think is important for them, some people value expensive things like diamonds or highly rated technology, some people on the other value things that are not financially valuable, like family, love or friends. The value of things is quite different from the price of things. A good example to prove it, is Apple. The price of Apple products are simply overrated. Iphone is like any other phone, but people buy it just to be popular and because everyone else are buying them. For Apple it is good of course, because they are serving benefits. Other example are designer clothes. The value of these clothing items are like clothes from basics s...

Second Im going to talk about studying business in Estonia and third Im going to talk about business in industrial sector. FIRST: Estonia is a relatively small country in the northern part of Europe. Estonia is strategically placed in the business corridor, between the Scandinavian countries (EU) and other eastern European countries, including Russia. Estonia has suffered from economic Chrisis as many ohter European countries and compared to ohter bigger countries like Spain and Greece, Estonia has managed to recover from the Chrisis quite well. The number of unemployed people has reduced, still many private companies have struggles due to the fact that the income of consumers has been low and the ability to consume products provided by the companies has...

How does virtual communication influence our behaviour and relationships

How does virtual communication influence our behaviour and relationships? Virtual world is growing closer to ours every day. It has its pros, as well as cons and the industry involved in it has grown most rapidly in the last 15 year. Therefore, does virtual communication influence us positively or negatively? Becoming virtual in the means of communication has changed our lives forever. Recent studies tell that about 75% of the people in North-America use the internet and from that 95% use email and other virtual communication software. This percentage has grown over 130% from the year 2000. I bring my examples on North-America because there is the highest percentage of Internet users in population. Talking of it, what is internet? Statistics say that it is porn, but I believe that people mostly use it for communication. But can it be bad? Along with the use of the Internet, obesity also has grown dramatically...

GMO - geneetiliselt muundatud organismid

Tallinna ... kool GMO Referaat Koostaja: ... Klass: 9a Geneetiliselt muundatud organismid Tallinn 2007 Sisukord 2 Geneetiliselt muundatud organismid 1. Sissejuhatus Enamus inimestest ei tea mida tähendab GMO või mida see endast kujutab. GMO ehk geneetiliselt muundatud organismid on organismid, kuhu on lisatud võõrast geneetikalist informatsiooni, kasutades geenitehnoloogia meetodeid. Geneetiliseks muundamiseks on vaja tunda geneetikat ja rakubioloogiat, kuna enamus tööd seisneb siiski DNA ja kromosoomide jne tegelemises. GMO-d on palju uuritud, kuid arvamusi on erinevaid, mõned arvavad, et see on kahjulik ning pikaajaline mõju võib olla laastav, mõndade arusaamist mööda on see just inimeste tulevik, kuna GMO-d on kasutatud toitudes juba pikka aega. Countering

7. That may be true, but _____ 7.0 COUNTERING 7.1 Countering directly (through antithesis) But fox-hunting is part of country life. It's one of our traditions. But public transport is expensive and inconvenient. But English has borrowed from the Romans, the Vikings, the Saxons and the French But freight trains can't deliver goods from door to door But who can say that we will develop into civilized beings? Surely, God has the right to cut his losses! But why play the gold medalists' national anthems and why wear stars and stripes on your swimming costumes? But if you worked on a farm and your chickens were killed by foxes, you'd think differently. But if you detect more crimes, you'll still need prisons. But if you followed that line to its logical conclusion, you'd pardon all criminals. But surely, you can see wha...

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS Our environment is constantly changing. However, as our environment changes, so does the need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround it. With a massive influx of natural disasters people need to be aware of what types of environmental problems our planet is facing. Current environmental problems make us vulnerable to disasters and tragedies, now and in the future. Unless we address the various issues seriously we are surely doomed for disaster. Current environmental problems require urgent attention. 1. Pollution: Pollution of air, water and soil require millions of years to recoup. Industry and motor vehicle exhaust are the number one pollutants. Heavy metals, nitrates and plastic are toxins responsible for pollution. While water pollution is caused by oil spill, acid rain, urban runoff; air pollution is caused by various gases and toxins released ...

Fishery resources Capture fisheries resources are highly diverse. FAO landing statistics refer to about 2 500 species or group of species most of which are finfish. By far the most numerous fish species, and those most important to aquaculture and fisheries, are teleosts, or bony fish, which in the sea extend from small "grazing" species such as anchovy to large active predatory fish such as tuna. A similarly wide range is also found in freshwater, with the most important species from a production point of view belonging to the carp family. These account for over half the total of inland waters fisheries production. Marine capture fisheries resources are usually considered close to full exploitation worldwide with about half of them fully exploited, one quarter over exploited, depleted or recovering from depletion and one quarter only with some capacity to produce more than they presently do...
