In 1969 Nathaniel Branden said that high self-esteem is the main foundation for parenting and has dominated since. It is incredibly important for us all to have a feeling of self-worth and acceptance, but as- children are been praised too much. Are we given the skills to work at a goal instead of expecting to complete it easily because we are told we are "smart"? Are we set up for failure by being told how smart we are, when in all actuality maybe we are right where we should be: in the middle? I have a feeling that the way we praise and are been praised is going to change; not that teachers and parents are going to be overly critical of their children and students, but that the way they encourage their kids will be more equal to others. Beauty pageants for small girls should be banned Today's beauty pageants are detrimental to a child's development. These kinds of competitions can lead to low selfconfidence and poor body image. While most beauty pageants cater strictly to girls, there are a growing number that include boys as well. I firmly believe that taking part of beauty pageants is pressured by contestants' parents. It is their vision of how their children should look and act like. Some children do not want to partake in those competitions because it is tiring and chaotic, some children even do not understand what it is all about, because they are too young for that. Gays as Parents Gay adoption is very hot topic today. There are people of the same sex who love each other and want to get children, but as we all know, children cannot be born without mother and father and a gay couple has to adopt to get a child. Some think that a child cannot have mentally healthy childhood if growing up with gay parents. I think that children who are old enough, should decide themselves if they want gay parents or not. I do not see a problem if a thirteen year old kid decides that he preferres gay parents to no parents. But the poblem is that younger children or even babies are usually adopted.
