Westminster Today

Westminster Today For centuries, Westminster was the political and religious center, but today Westminster is the center of government. Westminster Hall was built in 1099 by the son of William the Conqueror and is one of the largest medieval halls. It was part of the Westminster Palace, which was destroyed by a fire in 1834. The Houses of Parliament that we see today were rebuilt in the 19th century after the fire. The Big Ben clock tower is the largest four-sided ringing clock in the world and it is also one of the London's most famous symbols. Some think that Big Ben is the name of the clock on the tower, but actually it is the name of the big 13-ton bell that rings every fifteen minutes. The most historic religious building in Britain is Westminster Abbey, a beautiful church across the street from the Houses of Parliament. It was begun between

Philosophy today

Philosophy Today The Great Divide Most contemporary philosophers follow one of two approaches "Continental" philosophy "Analytic" philosophy Continental philosophy is more influential on the European continent Analytic philosophy is predominant in the major research universities in the English-speaking world Analytic Philosophy Analytic philosophy developed from attempts in the early 20th century to make our concepts precise. The model of this procedure was science. Emphasis in contemporary analytic philosophy is on language and meaning, and meaning is understood as a relation between language and objective reality. Thus, understanding the structure of language is what reveals the structure of reality. Continental Philosophy At the same time that analytic philosophy was emerging, E. Husserl was developing his "phenomenological" approach...

Environmental problems today

Environmental problems today Nowadays we need to stand face to face against the environmental problems in spite of our everyday routine, that may affect the nature. Which are the most problematic environmental problems and how can we avoid them ? To start with, the biggest problem is global warming. The temperature is rising due to air pollution, which is caused by smoke from factories and of rising levels of CO2 . As a result, smog and soot causes health problems. Also, a big problem is deforestation. Due to the fact that it is causing destruction of the rainforest, it contaminates the water. To solve these problems, we certainly should use renewable sources of energy and we need to avoid dangerous gases. For example, we should switch off lights every time when we leave a room. Moreover, we should take public transport more often and stop using CFC's. We can solve environmental problems only if we follow certain rules. that it i...

Books Today and Tomorrow

Books Today and Tomorrow Why is it important to read books? Do people read less books than in the past? Will people read less in the future? Books have always played a great role in our lives and reading them is highly important. It increases knowledge and expands vocabulary, which integrates to writing. Reading books makes a person more intelligent and it gives a different perspective. Nowadays people tend to read less books than they used to. The main reason for this catastrophy is the development of technology. People would rather watch moving pictures in the television than pick up an old book covered in dust. In the past, when there were no television or computers to entertain people, books were basically the only amusement. On the other hand the lifestyle of ours has gotten tremendously busy and some do not find the time to just sit back and relax by reading. With the devel...

Books today and tomorrow

Books today and tomorrow Ervin Sagor Books have always played a great role in life and it is important to read them but nowadays people read less than they used to do. When I think about our relationship with books a question comes to my mind: `'Will there be books in the future?'' I think people read more books in the past because then there were no television and radio to entertain people. In the present people rather watch moving images from television than pick up a dusty old book. My opinion on importance of books is that there are books with empty storyline as well as there are books that are considered as true gems which contain knowledge and a great story and the importance of these books is immeasurable. Considering the fact that people in the future will be even lazier than they are now shows that the books will stay on the bookshelves or will b...

Animals we miss today

Causes: *The main cause of animal extinction, without doubt,is human demand, either for animal resources directly, or for the natural resources of the animals' habitats. *In addition to that, there are other indirect causes caused by human activities. *Habitat loss: Is considered to be the main cause for animal extinction. Humans are clearing our forests for wood and timber. The foodchain is disturbed and animals will die. *Wildlife trade: Poaching and wildlife trade are another common threat to animals. International wildlife trade has also been linked to drugs trade. The most common anilmal trade is pet trade, such as orangutangs. Animals are also killed for fur(tigers, leopards, cheetahs) *Climate change: It has been recently suggested that warmer global temperatures may be affecting animals. In fact, it has been suggested that the golden toad became extinct because of the warmer climate. The Animals *T-REX: Tyrannosaurus rex was on...

What Really Matters, Is Today, Not Tomorrow

What Really Matters, Is Today, Not Tomorrow People say that you have to make plans for tomorrow. You have to think about the future. But I say that there is no time like the present. We always think we have so much time. We postpone our duties, work and responsibilities. But it is such a shame to waste time, because we never now what might happen tomorrow. Secondly, it would be much easier to do these things today not tomorrow. Everybody should live one day at a time. When life gives us a chance to explore something new and exciting and meet interesting people, we should definitely use the oportunity. I think you have to be quite spontaneous to enjoy life. It is important to appreciate the people around us. You have to let them know how much you care about them and how much you need them in you life. And you have to do it today, because tomorrow we might not have the chance to do it.

Stress in the life of young people today Stress is a common problem in everyones life. However, it affects the young more than the adults. Young people are more easily influenced by it and often, can not cope with the pressure. The main reason why people are so stressed and overwhelmed all the time is the fast paced life we are all forced to lead. School, work and personal life often do not leave any time to take a breath and reload your batteries. Often, there is not an option to either study or work,

Cars are the greatest danger to human life today Nowadays driving with cars are very popular because they are very convenient and fast. Even though, there are people, who don't use cars for their own reasons. In my opinion, cars are useful and they give us more personal freedom. In the first place, there are a lot of people, who die in a car accident every year. The way I see it, is that peole themselves cause the greatest harm to society, not cars. Cars are not all dangerous if they're driven with care and attention.

Why young people today are healthier than ever before

why young people today are healthier than ever before Neath the modern men there is a opinion, that a sane mine and a healthy spirit in one boddy is human health. Lately attention is given to weight, especially by the younger females. At a verry early age people think that what thinner they are, the more beautyful and healtyer they are. They count calories, what they eat, do a lot of sports. Ofcourse there are some who tend to overstrain themselves, but mostly they do it within reason. We can find propacandas everywhere that want us to eat healthyer and hold our health. Lets start from smoking and drinking alcohol. Alcohol and tobaco shorten our lifetime crasually. Tobacco smoke is bad for our lung and alcohol is bad for our liver. Thats why all unhealthy products have a warning sign , tu make people more sane. Young people enjoy sports, because sport helps us keep a sane mind and a good and healthy look. How we look inflicts us anywher...

The Most Influential Figures in British History

The Most Influential Figures in British History There are many important historical figures, who have helped shape Britain into what it is today. In my opinion Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill are the ones who stand out and have had the biggest impact on British history. Firstly, Elizabeth I made a great impression on British history as she kept England from major wars during her reign, the kingdom expanded and she supported culture. The rule of Elizabeth I can be called a peaceful time as England did not enter any huge conflicts. She managed to keep good relations with other great countries

Do young people today learn enough at school to face the world tomorrow

Do young people today learn enough at school to face the world tomorrow? People name school the school of life. But may they affirm that? On the one hand, school period is time of growing up and forming of a human`s personality. A child gets know how to get on with people, how to communicate and makes his or her mind up about many questions with help of classmates and teachers. On the other hand, it depends on school. Tutors of some schools focus only on education. They don`t care of the discipline and pupils` behaviour at all. Probably such school-leavers have only several opportunities for the future to become criminals, join local gangs or to control themselves and to do their best in studies. Such schools may be really named the schools of life because children studying there are forced to grow up earlier than others. Furthermore, present youngsters spend a great deal of their spare time sitting in Internet. They communicate, s...

Brexit (inglise keelne)

From 28 to 27. What is the long-term consequence of the UK leaving the European Union? There is no question that the United Kingdom leaving the European Union or Brexit as we all know it, is a big hit for the EU and the UK. It’s by no means an easy process and a lot of people are against it, but today nothing can be done to stop it. Even though Brexit is seen by its leaders as a positive change, it will also have quite a negative effect on Britain and play a big role in reshaping European Union. Most British people were voting for Brexit to regain sovereignty, to ‘take back control’ and regulate their laws. At first glance, it may seem that they would be in charge of their actions which would mean that nobody on the outside can manipulate them. Although nowadays

If a student decides to go to work after finishing secondary school, he does not have the best advantages for getting a good job. Today employers value high-quality vocational qualifications, so it might not be as good as choice as continuing your education. However, if a student chooses to continue his education, he has many possibilities, for example, university or vocational education. At a university he can choose what he wants to study and for how long, for instance, to get a bachelors degree he has to complete three years of study at a university

The most pressing environmental issues in Estonia

The most pressing environmental issues in Estonia The earth is considered as one of the most beautiful planets in the Universe. Unfortunately, our planet is suffering due to many problems which should be solved before it is too late. Of course our country is not an exception. The major problems that are facing our country today are air and water pollution and recycle problem. Also we have, for example, deforestation problem and traffic jams, for instance, in Tallinn in rush-hour. Nevertheless, those problems are not so significant than previous. One of the biggest problems in Estonia is air and water pollution. One example of air pollution is exhaust fumes. Today we have a lot of transport: cars and buses, in the main in our capital. Kilt

material being wrapped up around one's upper body in a variety of ways and pinned or otherwise secured to keep it in place. The first clear reference to the kilt occurs in the year 1594.In that year, a group of Highlanders from the Western Isles went to Ireland to fight under Red Hugh O`Donnell. It was made from wool or a wool/linen combination and twill woven in a pattern of colored stripes which today has become known as tartan, though originally the word tartan referred to the type of cloth (like linen, or cotton) and not the pattern of colors as the word almost exclusively signifies today. At nearly every Highland Games gathering today, there are vendors who sell tartan items, whether kilts, blankets, scarves, ties, or tartan fabric. Roman invasion

The Romans remained in Britain from 43 AD to 410 AD. That is almost four hundred years (four centuries). Why did the Romans leave Britain? Their homes in Italy were being attacked by fierce tribes and every soldier was needed. The River Thames was quick way to transport goods between Britain and the Continent. The Romans saw this and built the town of Londinium around the river's main crossing point. The Romans gave britain: Language The language we used today was developed from the Romans. The Romans spoke and wrote in Latin and many of our words are based on Latin words. The Calendar the calendar we use today is more than 2,000 years old? It was started by Julius Caesar, a Roman ruler. It is based on the movement of the earth around the sun, and so is called the 'solar calendar.' The solar calendar has 365 days a year, and 366 days every leap year, or every fourth year. The names of our months are taken from the names of Roman gods and rulers

London - The City and Beyond

William the Conqueror in 1078. The whole group of buildings and towers is called the Tower of London. The Tower has a long, interesting history. It was a fortress, a royal palace and a prison. Many important prisoners have been executed there. Some say, that the ghosts of Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Gray and others now live there. Nobody knows when the ravens came to the Tower of London, but an old legend says that if the ravens leave, the kingdom will fall. Today eight ravens live there, and each one has a name. No one wants the ravens to leave, so some feathers are taken away from their wings so they can't fly. At night they sleep in their cages and during day they are free to move around. Tower Bridge is a symbol of London and is one of the several bridges that cross the Thames. It was built in 1894, when London was a busy port. Today the bridges open only a couple of times a week, but it is still a big tourist attractions
