Competition good or bad ?

When you are young and still studying in school, you would compete with your classmates for better grades, when you get older and start working, you would compete with your colleagues to get higher position with better salary. Companies compete with each other to get more customers.Countries compete with each other for a better economy. Even animals and plants compete with each other. But what are the good and bad sides of competition ? First of all, competiton makes us strive(pingutama) more than usually. When we must compete with other people, we want to be best or at least good. As a result, we are ready to do things that maybe are difficult or boring, but improve our skills. For example, if estonian proffessional skier Kristina Smigun wants to win a gold medal, she has to focus on the upcoming contest. That means to train every day without complaining about the lack of free time....

The Life-Changing Competition

A life-changing competition Finally, it was the 1st May the final day of the Youth Rock Competition. Many student bands from all over the country were preparing for the final battle. The Raven wasn't an exception. The vocalist, Daemon, practiced the guitar, while the others tried to calm down from the pressure that was thickening the air. Matrix, the guitarist, had taken his little sister with him. While he himself was practicing with the Ravens, Alice sat amongst the public. Suddenly, someone shook her hand. The girl turned and saw one extravagant-looking woman. "You are Alice Owen, right...

Ameerika ühendriigid

In the 1950s a black churchman by the name Martin Luther King started to fight for black people and said that they were equal to whites. After 1963 when he held his famous speech "I have a dream...", in 1964 the blacks were given same rights as the white. In 1968 King was murdered. The 1950s are known as the time of Cold War because of the competition with the Soviet Union. After that in the 1960s and 1970s the Americans fought in the Korean and in the Vietnam War, and in the1990s in the Gulf War and now they are fighting in Iraq. Carolina Kluft Biography

She excelled even more by winning her first major outdoor title, the heptathlon at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris with a score of 7,001 points, ahead of Eunice Barber, who had 6,755 points. Klüft thus became the third woman ever to break the 7,000 point barrier in the heptathlon. She set six personal bests in the seven disciplines including a 1.94m high jump and an exceptional 200m of 22.98s. At one stage she was on the brink of elimination from the competition after overstepping on the first two of her three long jump attempts but ended up recording the best jump of the competition with 6.68m. She was later awarded Waterford Crystal European Athlete of the Year Trophy 2003. That same year, Klüft also received the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal. She went on to win the heptathlon gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with a score of 6,952 points. She took the lead after the high jump and extended her lead after every event from then on...

Education

Yet sports programs take too much money and time, which otherwise could be used in artistic endeavors, or to buy more computers and books or special tutors. I especially loathe collegiate athletics, which become farm teams for professional clubs. These have no valid role at institutions of higher learning. The whole issue of scholastic competition needs careful review. Presently, space is so limited at many universities, and demand so high, that only students with the highest grades are accepted. Let us expand our ability to enroll students, and aim to admit all qualified applicants. This exclusion of non-A students bothers me more than high tuition rates do. Students in college can work summer jobs, such as fishing off Alaska, to earn their tuition; it is not necessary for parents or taxpayers to pay their way....

Carl Lewis

As he himself tells, he wasn't good at sport. A lot of boys did better at the same age and he was regularly beaten by his sister Carol in the track his parents constructed for them around the garden of their house! Amazingly his father was a friend of Jesse Owens and so Carl grew up under the legend of this man who won four gold medals in the Olympic games of Berlin 1936. Carl begun with long jump and after a competition , at the age of 10, he was awarded by Owens himself. But a sad episode made people worry for his career. When he was 12, after having sung in the chorus of the church, he went to play with other children but, not paying the right attention, he stumbled and got a deep wound in the right knee. What worried the most was that his tendon was about to be cut and doctors stated he would have never jumped like before. Fortunately he could go on practicing long jump and at the age of 13 he jumped 5,51 m....

Canada

Lacrosse is a team sport that is played by ten players (men) or twelve players (women), each of whom uses a netted stick (the crosse) in order to pass and catch a very hard rubber ball with the aim of scoring goals (each worth one point traditionally, but also two in Major League Lacrosse) by propelling the ball into the opponent's goal. The team scoring the most points after two halves, of varying length from competition to competition, and overtime if necessary, wins. Most popular in North America, lacrosse is Canada's official national summer sport and the fastest growing sport in the United States 11. Culture Canadian culture is a mixture of British, French, and American influences, all of which blend and sometimes compete in every aspect of cultural life, from filmmaking and writing to cooking and playing sports. It has also been influenced by American...

Fridrick douglass

This shift in opinion, as well as some other political differences, created a rift between Douglass and Garrison. Douglass further angered Garrison by saying that the Constitution could and should be used as an instrument in the fight against slavery. With this, Douglass began to assert his independence from the Garrisonians. Garrison saw the North Star as being in competition with the National Anti-Slavery Standard and Marius Robinson's Anti-Slavery Bugle. In March 1860, Annie, Douglass' youngest daughter, died in Rochester, New York, while he was still in England. Douglass returned from England the following month, taking the route through Canada to avoid detection. By the time of the Civil War, Douglass was one of the most famous black men in the country, known for his oratories on the condition of the black race, and other issues such as women's rights....
